  • Cut's like a knife

  • Nul n'est plus triste que la tristesse d'un Homme...

  • But your tears, they felt so hot upon my shirt...

  • this lyrics! HOLY SHIT! fuckin perfect

  • oops...wrong video

  • i made myself a bagel this morning.....i added some cream cheese...it adds somg zing

  • no yeah, its the one where haley gets hit and nathan hits dante

  • a truly mesmerising song.Saw him perform this live and you could cut the atmosphere with a knife. spine tinglingly good

  • simply beautiful music...

  • This is at least my third or fourth post for this song....I love it.

  • great song, great temo and lyrics...amazing song...

  • This is a beautiful and caring soul who has chosen to share the truth of "us" and "we" know who "we" are...it is true, what cutecarcharodon had to say, I agree. Sometimes I wonder, and I really wanted to love again...but have only found falseness & fear & as I pick myself up yet again, I decide...I will fall madly in love with myself this time.

  • he looks a wee bit like james morrison, oh wait sorry, james morrison looks a wee bit like him :P

  • One of my favourite song ever. Truly amazing...reminds me of One tree hill!!

  • @Caitixxxx i love this song too, first heard in on OTH, although I dont remember the episode. Do you?

  • @ForeverSupermans17 its the fourth season... the episode when hayley gets run down by duante. and dan takes the wrap for nathan. i think. not sure. maybe the episode afterwards when keith shows lucas what life would be like if he wasnt a nice guy.

  • @MegaMinimusic No, you're right. It's really moving. Haley's down, then Lucas has his heart attack and there's that really moving commentary, cos they just won the State Championship (or whatever it's called).

  • theres probably a reason why Ray has not put this on Video...

  • Ms T, i m glad there are still people like you and me out there...

  • I love his kinda raspy voice !!

  • I have never heard a song that hit home so hard before. Absolutely stunning. I'm sorry, I left you because I don't care for you romantically anymore and I handled it poorly. I wish you could get over it already and just move on with your life instead of dwelling on it still. I just want to see you happy again.

  • I love this song...the music , the words. Makes me miss things I never even knew I owned.

  • thumbs up if Ray LaMontagne's haunting lyrics sent you here.

  • Thumbs up if the season 4 finale of OTH brought you here !

  • Just so beautiful, thanks Victoriachr for uploading.

    Love is never simple.

  • this song is so raw...im so glad ray decided to share his words with the rest of the world.

  • Amazing thanks for uploading!

  • back in o7 , this was my myspace, profile song. either this song or empty when myspace was the shit. good times.

  • he looks like jesus

  • @jon1mike jesus was black

  • @Mikey121291 Yeah, jesus was black, and mlk jr was white...

  • nice song, interesting style...

  • めっちゃイケメンやん。。。

I love his smoky voice, so sexy

  • ''would you steal from me the sorrow that I've earned''..magical..

  • @ItsBanpo Haha, well done.

  • thnx for sharing with us

  • this is my favorite song, I remember that I listed to it for the first time in september 2008. I'm still totally in love with the song

  • love this guy man!!!

  • He and Adele would make an amazing duet !!!

  • @jusifymysoul try him and Anthony Hamilton

  • @jusifymysoul I second that idea! would love to hear them sing together.

  • @jusifymysoul This would make my life

  • @jusifymysoul

Funny, I had the same thought. And I love both - they take me out of this world and make my day every time I am low - and make me realize there is lot to thank for when I am high

  • @jusifymysoul you should hear Him and Damien Rice!!

  • @jusifymysoul Every Ray Lamontagne song has oe of these comments posted. I really don't get it, they are from two completely opposing schools; one overblown and warbly and one straight from the heart and understated. I think it would be an awful idea

  • that guitar in the beginning is almost too haunting...

  • love this song..has so much meaning:)

  • @desimodo- That's an interesting interpretation. My interpretation is this

-Wife becomes jealous and misreads a situation and cheats under an assumption

-Man, who is innocent "All that was false was fact and all those lies were truth" is then justified in returning the favor. The sorrow earned is the time spent in a strangers bed

-Neither want this for their lives both would rather reclaim the sanctity of their relationship calling the whole thing a lesson learned.

    Happened to me once :-)

  • @squishler wow.. u really read into the lyrics, lol.... but u read them perfect.....nice song.. happened to you once?...happened to me to :(

  • @squishler You are very insightful. Thank you for the interpretation of these lyrics. I actually DID find myself wondering what the heck Ray was singing about. :) lol. Now I'm listening to this song in a whole new light.

(I'm very bad with lyrics, but I LOVE heartfelt music).

  • Where was a nomination and Grammy for what Ray's done last night? Bieber and Gaga get accoloades and nothing comes this guy's way?? Maybe he's won in years past and I don't know but if not, there's something wrong with the selection process.

  • @stretchcity It may seem like him not being nominated is a bad thing, but really it's not. Ray LaMontagne's music is something special. Something that shouldn't be spread out. Let it be for the lucky people that have found his music.

  • REAL TALENT goes by the wayside. FAKE BS is rewarded.

  • @cutecarcharodon It's ridiculous how people are buying into all the media and music that is so sex-centered. Makes me wonder how these singers survived.

  • @CraterMuffin Thanks for the comment/reply. It's nice to hear from like minded people on things that are close to my heart. I dislike pretty much ALL (with a few exceptions) of the music that is "popular" in todays society, and I'm NOT OLD! How bad does THAT suck? I always thought I'd hate the popular music once I got OLD...... but, it's sunken so low that even at a relativley young age, I can't bring myself to listen to it anymore.

  • @cutecarcharodon Indeed! It is quite pitiful, actually, how someone will listen to singers talk about a party where they got pregnant, but wont listen to a man who lost his wife. Its changed every aspect of the "love" people rant about. Now the only "love" people feel is in their pants. Its upsetting. I'm glad there are people like us out there... We actually respect music and people instead of waking up in the morning and seeing p.diddy as your inspiration...

  • @CraterMuffin tik tok is about her getting pregnant at a party!?! i dont remember those lyrics ..probably because they are all soo pointless!!

  • @QuiteCute09 Tik Tok is just about getting totaly wasted. I listen to it and think it's cathcy. But this song is so much more than cathcy. I think he has a lovely voice and such a inspiring text.

  • @CraterMuffin So well said..! I relate to music like this, and I wish more of us did..

  • @bragonza Exactly! Music pulls our own emotions out and allows it to intertwine with every note and lyric said.. it's pretty magical stuff.

  • @stretchcity nowdays grammies are only for those selling millions and very commercial acts and most of it its politics controlled by big record labels.

never the lees in this era we know whats great with out any help, and ray's music its just that , we dont need any one to tell us otherwise

but i agree with you those organizations should at least let those artist partecipate ,

  • Been a fan for a while, but just heard this song. OMG. gives me goosebumps.

  • Amazing.

  • after a break up this is probably the most emotional song to listen to.

  • @Theconman - this song is about a man who is pushed away by his wife and believes she knows - but she then acts betrayed and he is made villain - all the pain he has felt is denied expression as she gets to play the role of the betrayed - way more complex - as is life - than simply cheating on his wife.

"So why is it now after I had my fill

Would you steal from me the sorrow that I've earned."

  • @desimodo You nailed it!!!

  • @desimodo You nailed it!!!

  • this song is about him cheating on his wife...so...yeah its sad, but lets keep it in perspective. and dont get me wrong, i have been listening to this guy when Acre of Land first came out...HUGE fan

  • Cat Stevens of he 90s

  • This song is so beautiful it haunts me.

  • Does the guitar theme at the beginning remind any else of Simon and Garfunkel's El Condor Pasa?

  • This song rips my heart out but seems to make it heal all at the same time...If only Ray knew...I live this song now...Its a lesson learned for sure...

  • Where has THIS song been hiding...right when I think I have heard the best Ray Lamontagne could ever breath into this world...I find "Lesson Learned"...There are no words to describe this amazing singer songwritter. I stand in awe of the gift God has given him...AWE STRUCK...Beautiful...

  • I really adore this song... I'm thinking... Robert Pattinson could make an AMAZING cover on this song. :D

  • @GirlWithoutBrain <--- Ya don't say?

  • @XspookyXkidX Hahahahahahahahah. Haha. Good call.

  • @GirlWithoutBrain -_- No.

  • The story of my life... Why does it hurt so much?

  • My dog cant stop listenning to him..

He makes her so happy :)

  • @amirper2000 my dogs love him too!!!!

  • I've never cried to a song before... But here I am replaying this song 300 times. Just so I can cry again... 300 times.

  • Something about this guy is freaking blowing me away. I don’t understand it, I have always listened to the more "trendy" music, but I saw someone was referred to this artist on a John Mayer video so I checked it out. I'm appalled. There are no words in my vocabulary to describe this guy.

  • Hits me every time...

  • Ok, I can't figure out if this song is about the man cheating or being cheated on.

  • @LoveLaughTwilight It's about the man cheating in a relationship that doesn't go well and he is torn between feelings of guilt and the feeling that she wished it upon herself.

  • Devastador... Voz perfeita!!!

  • Ray is cool ! The Real Deal ! John Mayer is such a poser and a publicity slut compared to him . Ray's low key nature and amazing presence makes you like him even more , and what amazing music ! !

  • the best artist by a mile who is alive today, love to sit back with him on in the background and a beer

  • what sheer beauty this musician conveys in song...powerful and stunning !

  • this song touches my heart in such a beautiful way. It's a masterpiece. I get chills from the first seconds of guitar till the end..and even after.. cause it takes a while till you come back to reality from a song like this.

  • One Tree Hill used this song so beautifully, it's an amazing song when your feeling down.

  • About 39 seconds into the song the Youtube player stopped loading. All I could think was, "No! I don't want to stop listening to such beauty." Thank god it started loading again. Ray is a genius.

  • amazing amazing-ness.......had to listen to it about 10 times in a row. I am a recent fan of RM and this song is top on my list. amazing poetry and feeling and passion and sense of story. wow.

  • love love love this song i dont kno how many times ive heard it but i always come back to it

  • Poutz, One Tree Hill arrasou meu coração agora! Pow, malzão com essa música maravilhosa!!! Bom demais!!!

  • listen to it, again, and again...

    thank you!

  • where can i buy a man like this

  • would you steal from me the sorrow that I've earned :))))) great song!!

  • is he a poet? a musician? a tragic soul? or just a gift from whatever god we have left.

  • @MrDavidleiton he's a poetic musician who is a gift from our god

  • Fantastic song. Powerfull, yet so fragile.

  • i am in a trance every time i listen to his songs- absolute genius!

  • his work is so heart-gripping.

Ray LaMontagne, thank you for sharing your talent with the world - you're work is incredible

  • Trein, ik, ogen dicht

  • absolutely beautiful

  • I love Ray, and when I first heard this I thought "Shut the f*&% up, you are kidding me!... It's just yet another haunting and simplistic ballad. Amazing...

  • This song reminds me of my parents, in my father's perspective

  • so much emotion from such a humble being.

  • He has so many songs in ONE TREE HILL... this one is from the best episode 4x09

  • BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!*TEARS*

  • Utterly beautiful; poignant.

  • epic!

  • Breathtaking.

  • all i can say is *sniffs*... epic

  • I gave this video a thumbs-up b/c I kind of adore most of "The Mountain"'s songs, but I have to warn people against Narcissism.

  • Honesty, even painful honesty, is less painful than gentle lies. I can appreciate this song and it's meaning.

  • VEVO SUCKS!!!!

  • Robert Pattinson kind of reminds me of Ray......but nothing at all like him...they are both great musicians!

  • @Chavitalo as much as I like Robert, I don't think he's on the same level as Ray

  • @Chavitalo Robert pattinson is a musician? You mean that guy from twilight...?

  • @balius88 yepyep...check out let me sign

  • the opening guitar is enough to make someone cry. like i am right now. great song to listen to if you just feel like being alone.

  • Incredible Song, it was incredibly used in One Tree Hill, i think this guy sounds like Eddie Veder kind of, so if anybody really likes this song, i would reccomend Society by Eddie Veder, it sounds similar

  • @walkingintothewild I agree, I get the same feeling I get from Eddie Vedder with his sound. Still, we have to look at these artists as seperate and shouldn't compare them to eachother. Let us just enjoy each artist on its own.

  • He'll be at the gulf shores music festival on may 14-16

  • I'm not really into this type of music but he is just amazing. Beautiful voice, great songwriting talent and an unassuming and humble soul...the world so needed Ray...ty sir for sharing your heart with us

  • Artists like Ray Lamontagne bring credibility to those "dumb shows". I think its great. It doesn't matter how you come across great artists, the important part is that you're lucky enough to come across them.

Ray, I love you man you are my favorite.

  • agreed

  • nice relaxing jam!

  • i think i inspired ray to write this

  • is he dead?

  • No LJOSweeney he,s not dead he,s very much alive and plays regular gigs all mover America and Europe, and if you ever get a chance to see him grab it with both hands the man is amazing live !

  • oh good, got a bit confused reading some of the comments, yea only heard him recently but voice is one of a kind. hope he continues on for a long time

    cheers

  • His voice is amazing. It's so calm and beautiful. I've always loved this song but I never new who sang this until now and I'm not surprised it's him because after hearing "Hold You In Your Arms"..I'm not surprised that those two amazing songs come from this talented singer.

  • beautiful song....brings tears to my eyes. His words are soooo true, so true...

  • why does everyone fight using comments on videos..? music is a peacemaker,, its the only thing we have left that actually keeps the peace. just shut up and listen to the music.

  • agree

please just listen, feel and let your soul fill...

life is too short for anything else

  • wicked track

    cheers uploader

    though it's called 'lesson learned'

  • No no no no no. Ray Lamontagne is too good to have to ever be associated with such a joke of a show. I know that's mean, and it's not like I don't ever watch dumb tv shows, I just don't like the idea of such an amazing artist being mentioned in the same conversation that "Scott and Lucas" (or whoever) are.

  • @summers15789

I agree, mostly just because people discover just one of his songs through these dumb shows and never bother to listen to his other (AMAZING) music.

  • @ BeckyJacks

I discovered him through 'these dumb shows'. (well OTH)

I've since bought the Trouble, and Till the Sun Turns Black album.

Ive discovered a lot of music through one tree hill. A lot of music you wouldn't normally assume a guy like me would listen to. Surely the fact the show is pointing people in the direction of good music is a good thing? It could be worse, they could play just a load of commercial pop music. This not only adds to the show, but introduces people to good music

  • well dude think of it as a musician would. He's getting his music out there, perhaps not in the way he would like, but he's getting it out there so that he can share it with others. That and they probably paid good money.

  • @sweetcyanide218

No I agree, I know how pretentious comments like mine sound. I just can't help but be annoyed once in a while when people "discover" an artist (and the "only" song they've apparently ever written) from something like Twilight or a dumb TV show...but at the end of the day any musician hopes to make money, and I'm glad when the talented ones get some long deserved recognition. Anddd somehow I doubt Ray LaMontagne cares more about what I think than about getting his music out lol.

  • haha though when I read your comment I thought the same thing XD XD XD

  • So georgous.

  • craighetherington... quoting one tree hill, what a programme. and this is an incredible song.

  • Does this darkness have a name? This cruelty, this hatred? How did it find us? Did it steal into our lives, or did we seek it out and embrace it? What happened to us? That we now send our children into the world like we send young men to war, hoping for their safe return, but knowing that some will be lost along the way. When did we lose our way, consumed by the shadows, swallowed whole by the darkness. Does this darkness have a name? Is it your name?

  • One Tree Hill and it's amazing quotes.. This song is so strong and intense and it fits that 4x09 scene perfectly!

    ~Marie

  • @craighetherington

Dude I could feel your words, filled with pain, sorrow, and anger, im with you bro.

  • @craighetherington i read thhat while listnin to the begging of this song and it seemed almost scripted it fit so perfect

  • @craighetherington that is beautiful. i feel like u are talking about me.

  • @craighetherington love this quote heard it on one tree hill wen i loved that show

  • @craighetherington One Tree Hill, Chad Michael Murray Season 3

  • @craighetherington

    watch tree hill much? :P

it's from the shooting at the school - episode if I remember correctly.

  • @CharlieCheers nope. when haley gets hit by the car and lucas drops

  • @craighetherington .......wrong venue.

  • @craighetherington .....wrong venue....and not very good.

  • @craighetherington Lucas Scott? Hmm.. Copy/Paste a quote from One Tree Hill sure does make your comment popular i see :-)
