At a certain he states that shooting through the umbrella creates harsher shadows then using it as reflective I think thats incorrect. Its vice versa. Reflective creates harsher shadows cuz its hard light and shoot through creates softer and more diffused shadows because the light is being diffused !
Well, if we all had that kind of lovely model on hand for our demonstations we might be as casual with her presentation as well!!! Don't complain to me if someday she picks up one of those heavy duty light stands and bonks you on the noggin! :o)
The demo would be more dramatic if you didn't have such close white walls to bounce the light around... I love shoot through umbrellas because they automatically feather the light if you use them just right!

COMPOSITION!!!
You put her face in the center of the focusing screen!! Use the whole frikken frame laddie! You are not a newbie! Also too darn close... no wonder her nose is too big... back off and shoot her full-frame half-body with a 100+mm lens.
I have one question - how strong is your built in flash in this video. Isnt it affects image?? I mean affects the effect of the flash through umbrella (shadows)?
Very good video. To soften/spread the light even more, the omni bounce or the flip out diffuser can be used as well. Very enjoyable and Kim is great. The boob-lift is priceless! LOL!!
not to nit-pick, but the umbrella should have come through the mount the other way(when shooting through it). The hole for the shaft is angled to aim the flash at the center of the umbrella.
Nice video! The thing I like about shoot through umbrellas is that you can stick it literally few inches from the subjects face if you really want a soft light, The light indeed is a lot harder to control and is all over the place.
Btw, I've found that using an omni-bounce type diffuser on your flash - if you can afford the light loss - helps fill the umbrella better. Mainly use it for shoot throughs though as I want to control the spill on a reflective one.

Hi, question, with the shoot-through, would it help if we put a reflector on the right? Thanks!

@jgillcustoms I had the same problem. The flash is too high on the stand, so its not centered.

@jgillcustoms Why did you say 'not to nit-pick'
You just did!
JamesThornbrook 1 year ago
@jgillcustoms You get umbrella stands that have non angled mounts like the Phottix Varos. His is probably the same type.
