@starknight97 This is a giant robot anime. Since when did giant robot anime facilitate any sort of need, real or imagined? Giant transforming robots looks awesome, whether they be fighter jets, or battleships. Who cares if it's practical? :P

2. The original Macross transformed to bypass a damaged section in it's power systems and fire the main gun. Later models (Battle 7, Battle Frontier/Galaxy and the Quarter) don't NEED to transform but they do it anyway.
The Robotech series is based on the structural bones of the Macross Series which has been running since 1982.
Macross Frontier was last year's anniversary celebratory series of Macross and takes place many years after the first Macross. Macross Quarter is a 400 meter ship. The actual Macross ships are just shy of 2 KILOMETERS long.
Big difference. Robotech compared to the original Macross just doesn't come close.

Macross was used as the starting point for what we call Robotech here in North America. All those things you mention are known in NA as Robotech. Robotech - as we know it - is composed of Macross, and 2 other series, Southern Cross, and Super Genesis Climber MOSPEADA(?). They all are set in the same universe, just different times of it. Hope this helps.
In Japan they called Robotech Macross and had several other series after what we know as the Robotech saga. They had Macross Plus , Macross 7 , Macross Zero and Macross Frontier in addition to what we got.
well they didnt have too before either it was the fact the macross was carrying the civilian population in its belly that was the main reason to protect it . even then it manage to take out Bodozla's zentran fleet with a little help from Bretai
