i miss the Three Rivers, best childhood memory, standing in north side, pittsburgh park watching it every day. hmm, aren't they putting a viewliner on the capitol limited and pennsylvanian to supplement the three rivers?
No I am not an employee, just rode it many times from PGH-NYP or CHI-NYP. I miss the Heritage 10-6's that used to be run on this train before the Viewliners were assigned to it. I belive this video was taken after the MHC's were sidelined, as 40/41 used to have 8 or 9 MHC's on the head-end in addition to the load of Express Boxcars and Roadrailers on the rear. Great vid!
I have to agree, I miss Amtrak's premier freight train from Chicago/Pittsburgh to NY! Great train it was with a fantastic crew! Glad to be able to be on the last run of her. :(
• Amtrak was losing money on passenger section of the Broadway
• Amtrak decided to cancel the train and just provide daytime service to Pittsburgh, with the MHCs from Philly/NY transferring overnight to the Capitol Limited
• People asked why Amtrak couldn't transfer passenger cars too
• Since it was a pain to put single-level cars on the Capitol, Amtrak decided to extent the Three Rivers to Chicago
The Viewliners that had been earmarked for the Broadway got sent to the Boston section of the LSL. When Amtrak extended the Three Rivers to Chicago, they had to rehab three or four Heritage 10-6 sleepers for the 3R. However, they had to obtain a government grant to use the 10-6s because they were direct-dump (toilets flush to tracks). When the government grant ended, Amtrak didn't get an extension. With the sleepers on the Boston LSL losing money, Amtrak sent them to the 3R.
That deer has a story all its own. When I drove up to this location, there was two hunters calling it quits, and getting into their car empty handed. They left as the Amtrak train passed. I don't think they where gone 15 minutes, and the deer appeared. The dear finally walked down the ROW, and I got pictures of him, and his huge 8 point rack. That was a treat. Thanks for looking, Jack

It's so sad that this was the train that replaced the Broadway. What on earth was Amtrak thinking?

Okay, here's what happened:
• Amtrak was losing money on passenger section of the Broadway
• Amtrak decided to cancel the train and just provide daytime service to Pittsburgh, with the MHCs from Philly/NY transferring overnight to the Capitol Limited
• People asked why Amtrak couldn't transfer passenger cars too
• Since it was a pain to put single-level cars on the Capitol, Amtrak decided to extent the Three Rivers to Chicago
