  • Preposterously brilliant; how can you go wrong with lyrics like "two lumps, please, you're the bees' knees, but..so am I?"

  • My mom is Mexican and my Father is Irish .....

  • it's time that the tale were told of how you took a child and you made her obsessed.

  • This is definitely my favorite version of this song. Song isn't the same without the piano.

  • One of my fave SMITHS tracks..........haven't heard this for ages, thanks for posting :)

  • 3 people fell in the fountain

  • R.I.P. Shelagh Delaney

  • whilst recoding in london Morrissey disappeared.a few hours later they'd found him,he'd fancied a bag of chips and could only get them from Manchester so he'd nipped out.such a Morrissey thing to do,you have to love him..

  • fifteen minutes with you....

  • Don't know why but the guitar break in this song always sounded like the piano in Simon Smith and his dancing bear.

  • This is now known as the Jerry Sandusky song, lol

  • For some reason the audio is a bit sharp. It sounds like there's an undercurrent of static or something and it's not my speakers cause other uploads of the this song sound fine . Great song though! thanks for the upload regardless.

  • @MrDeliriaframe its lower pitched because of copyright.

  • Me and Marius.

  • "People said you were easily led, and they were half-right"

  • Oh Morrissey.... You make me want to tell them that you're Irish.

  • Oh Morriseey.... You make me glad that I'm a heterosexual

    Just kidding...

Oh come on, it was funny admit it...

I love The Smiths, they gave my teen social awkwardness a soundtrack...

  • Oh Morrissey..... You make me wish I were English.

  • impossible 3 people were not even neutral to this song! but to not like it, is even sadder than the song!

  • It sounds like the version from the Peel Sessions.

  • the bees knees

  • oh Morrissey you make me WISH I was English!!!

  • There are 2 early versions of this song, one on the album 'The Smiths' and the other on 'Hatful of Hollow.' This version is the one from Hatful of Hollow which was recorded at a John Peel session. The original version on the Smiths has the piano etc on it. and is a little more Jonny Mar jingley guitar. I hope that this clarifies. Simply one of the best tracks from the best bans in history, still as brilliant today as it was nearly 30 years ago!

  • @mika23331 This is not the Hatful Of Hollow version. It's the debut album version.

  • Makes me proud to be human

  • Does anyone know the topic of this song? I heard it was about pedophilia.

  • @lyonslaforet Reel around the fountain is a palare term for fellatio, it`s not clear if the fellatio in question is `legal` or not though. I thonk it alludes to SPM`s blossoming sexuality in his youth but that`s just my opinion :)

  • @dpmhiaddict I never thought about it! Thanks for your opinion.

  • @lyonslaforet omg

  • This version sounds a bit more 'produced' than the original vinyl I remember. Maybe additional piano and other stuff.

  • the beautiful thing about the smiths, is that they are there for you in a certain time in your life. You don't have to always like them but they are their when you need them and people who never like the smiths have missed something in their own life.

  • Always have and always will love this all time clasic. Morrisey has a gift and one day will be reccognised! xxx

  • @BassistInATutu Yes, Morrissey is as gifted as any of history's greatest artists and he and his work will be studied, and courses will be taught at universities on Morrissey.

  • hahaha extraordinary... this charming man stands alone and in the future he will be viewed and respected as a genius and one of the greatest artists ever to live ...

not to minimize the talent of the entire original band that made this possible, all of the other members, not just marr

  • I love this song, you can feel the emotion in it so powerfully,I think.

  • one of the songs of my life

  • will always love the smiths till the day i die, oh slap me on the patio anyday.....

  • i know this will sound f'd up but so be it. back in college (last century), i started seeing a girl. she had a boyfriend at a different school and I had a girlfriend at a different school. a perfect storm. anyway, she turned me on to the smiths. i remember this song because I was totally digging it when she broke the news that this tune was her and her boyfriends song. at first i was like damn but then, I said the hell with it and have loved it every since. strange I know.

  • your the bees knees but so am iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

  • People see no worth in you... but I do

  • This should be on prescription That is all !!!

  • Wait... Morrissey's gay?

  • me gusta porque a mi amigo DIEGO le gusta :)

  • I like to sing, "I dreamt about you last nite, and I came on myself twice....." LOL!!! :-P

  • 15 minutes with you i would most defiantly not say no..and im straight

  • @MrKelvin1979 you can pin and mount me like a butterfly

  • @mysticalHeir That's my favourite line. <3

  • @PistachioPistachio yes! another great line by morrissey, i love that line too <3

  • Wow - this waxes clean in 2011 still. In 1984 as a breeder it worked well with the girls. The g a y was not so obvious to the fairer sex. Not that there is anything wrong with t h a t.

  • The lyrics in this song have gotten me laid a good few times!!!

  • My Uncle Ernie used to sing this to me before he gave me my sex education.

  • Oh Morrissey.......You make me proud to be English.

  • @ValjeanMorrissey

Genius goes far, far beyond nationality.

Morrissey makes me proud to be human.

  • @ValjeanMorrissey irish blood.... (sorry, mic here. had to promote.)

  • @bmbenblog thumbs ups regardless.

  • @ValjeanMorrissey well he makes me proud to be irish all his bloodline is irish you are your blood :) so hes half english half irish ...irish blood english heart :)

  • Oh Morrissey.......

  • my uncle plays this while he gets into my bed.

  • Morrissey is my dad!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is the only song for me that I just want to go on and on forever. I find everything about it entrancing.

  • the last thirty seconds or so of that song never fails to send shivers all over me, such a beautiful song in every sense of the word <3

  • My favorite song. It's so beautiful.. like, this is the first song on their first album. This is the first thing these brilliant musicians wanted us to hear. It's like looking into the eyes of a person for the first time, knowing you're going to spend the rest of your life with them. I get that impression every time.

  • greatest band of all time.

  • Fave ever Smiths song Love it xx

  • "15 minutes with you, I wouldn't say no."

"People see no worth in you oh but I do."

"I dreamt about you last night & I fell out of bed twice. You can pin and mount me like a butterfly."

    So lovely.

  • like this if you saw it on AllSaints facebook!

  • @vaslilly HA! nobody liked it!

  • My dad, who is from Manchester (I'm American born), used to play this song non-stop in the car when I was eight, and I HATED it. But now that I am sixteen, and have recently fell in love and understand class lyrics, I cannot get enough of this song and the Smiths in general. Top song. Top band.

  • The reason this sounds different to the Hatful of Hollow version is because it's the original and the HH version was a live session done for Radio One :)

  • @DemonSpacePirate

Exactamundo. After "Meat is murder" this is the second best album! in my humble opinion, and i hail from Manchester.

  • Scott Weiland's cover did the Smiths right.

  • deze plaat heb ik grijs gedraaid in mijn studentenjaren in Tilburg

  • Best Song Ever

  • this is the original version. from the smiths 1st album. there have been no changes

  • I was 14 when I bought this album on vinyl when it first came out in the early 80's and as soon as cd's arrived I bought a copy too. I still love all the songs on it, they are all like old friends. the last 25 years have gone by for me with morrissey singing my life to me all the way. It's a man crush thing I think!

  • just to confirm, i have not edited the track. all i know is that its the original song from The Smiths' Debut album and should not be altered in anyway, i bought it on cd so it might of been re-mastered since the original vinyl was released. or it could be that transfering the song from itunes to windows movie maker and then again to youtube, may of altered the sound as stated earlier, although i have not experienced this with any of other songs i have uploaded, i hope this clears things up

  • @smithsfan92 yep is remastered with a Hammond organ but is not at all bad

  • @smithsfan92 Other than hearing more of the drums, I don't hear a difference, and I listen to this song a lot...

  • @smithsfan92 I had thi salbum in high school and this is how it sounded back then (1989)

  • @smithsfan92 I bought the CD in 2004 and this is how it sounded.

  • @lisafrankfashion : The sound of this clip is exactly as it was on the original vinyl. I bought it in the summer of - 84 and have listen to it since then...

  • @lisafrankfashion I checked it vs a best of compilation, Hatful of Hollow, as well as the original. It could be the fact that transferring it from original to youtube messed with the sound a slight bit, or that the poster tweaked the speed or pitch to bypass rules and regulations. But the piano/Hammond organ parts seem to only be on their debut album. (But I could be wrong)

  • @ScooterandSparky No, you are right. No piano/Keyboard in the "Hatful of Hollow" version

  • this song actually reminds me of another one of my favourite Englishmen that passed recently, Sebastian Horsley. "people see no worth in you, oh, but i do"

  • This is actually quite an odd song for an opener to an album, very slow paced and laid back.

  • @lisafrankfashion Funny. It sounded a bit weird to me also. A nudge slower, and the hi-hats and cymbals are way too sizzly. Maybe it is 'remastered' from a re-issue or tweaked up by the poster? I am familiar with the version on the Smiths self-titled album. Maybe smithsfan92 will inform us...

  • Childhood sexual abuse? God, this song is sad...

  • Gotta luv these guys. Listened to them for years

  • ohhh...i do i do i do

  • IT COULD BE CHILD ABUSE THAT'S ALWAYS BEEN MY THEORY

  • i lost my girl to this song..

  • bought this album back in 1983 and I still love it.

  • i dreamt about you last night, and i fell out of bed twice.................

  • ccvs

  • When morrissey sings 'i dreamt about you last night and i fell out of bed twice' it just breaks your heart. It nearly almost makes me well up. That's the great thing about the Smiths. They can make you laugh and cry within the space of 5 mintues. "15 mintues with you...oh i wouldnt say no." Genius.

  • Moz is famous for being narcissistic and egotistical. Therefore, this song is simply his own "animus" seducing his "anima". Meaning, his own archetypal male side vs. his female side. "15 minutes with you / well I wouldn't say no" is totally self - masterbatory. Most married men (even happily married men for that matter) would gladly spend 15 minutes alone privately pleasing themselves.

    JUST A THEORY. . . .

  • @NianioNostimos Interesting theory, i wonder is it about morrisey losing his innocence to another person i.e "....how you took a child and made him old" via the act of 'reeling around the fountain' which is old time slang for fellatio. i dont know, just a theory.

  • uuuhh I love this band

  • You can't listen to this song without singing along with Morrissey...

  • "You can pin and mount me like a butterfly"

From the master piece 'By grand central station I sat down and wept' By Elizabeth Smart. Morrissey's lyrics are the best for me, and is just because he is influence by the most talented writers. I dreamt about you last night, fell-out of bed twice. is a fhrase from the same book. is great, isn't?

  • "You can pin and mount me like a buttterfly" just about the most beatiful lyric ever. Along with

"There is a light and it never goes out"

  • Best version. Thank you for the upload.

  • Its time the tale were told........

  • bought this album bout 10 yrs ago & its just as beautiful & romantic as b4. While androdgynous, it was somehow sexy 2.

    N Eways-- luv u guys. peace,kick

  • thanks for posting. i saw the smiths in either 84 or 86 at the hollywood palladium. this was such a great time for music, being gay, and hoping to fall in love...this was all pre- AIDS era.. AIDS really wiped out a whole generation of people who were searching for love . people cant imagine how it feels to have friends who are alive and healthy one minute then on a death bed the next.. Lesson be: Be good to others...

  • I swoon..........

  • two lumps as in sugar, possibly in reference as to how 'sweet' the object of the song is, or he requires more 'sweetness' from said object/person

  • i fell in love with a girl and this is her favorite band. and unfortunately my feelings will never be corresponded. still the smiths are truly amazing, but their music is a constant and agonizing reminder of how much i love her and still do even though i know shell never be mine.

  • can someone please explain the meaning behind the following lyrics. "two lumps please, your the bees knees, but so am i" as i understand the term bees knees to indicate something of high quality. and please excuse my ignorance if someone might be offended. i usually understand MOZ's metaphors but sometimes i overthink a few. someone please explain.

  • two lumps refers to 2 lumps of sugar....you're the bees knees of course means you are really kool..but morrissey being his coy self says "but so am i...

  • @autumwind86

    Hi!

"two lumps please" would refer to sugar, like when you ask for sugar with your tea, so he wants his desired one to be sweeter to him

"you are the bee's knees"- in the 1920's to say something was the bee's knees was the highest form of praise, like saying you are really swell, or cool, or whatever people say now

the term comes from the fact that bees have pollen pockets or baskets in their legs (some have scopa) and this is for carrying the precious pollen

    Hope this helps! :)

  • Beautiful song and wonderful lyrics...it explains love.

  • AS a keyboardist, I always dig the fact that this, one of the earliest hits of this inargueably guitar driven band, is full of back ground organ and piano. Besides Asleep and the synth string lick on 'There is a light that never goes out', we rarely hear keys. I think Morrissey generally despised it...

  • yeah ans its pretty rare for a 80s new wave band... we realy need to concentrate ourself to hear the keyboard in this song

  • Morrisey!! I can not think of anyone with such a deep and poetic talent for writing lyrics. He's truly the master of songwriting.

  • I wonder if the music of the Smiths is banned in China.

  • always reminds me of the one that got away.

  • Heartbreakingly beautiful.

  • "I dreamt about you last night.....and I fell out of bed twice. You can pin and mount me like a butterfly".... I love that verse. this takes me back to when I was 15 years old back in 1984....Good times

  • I am straight as an arrow. Don't know if that means dick. This is my favovourite band, Love them like a close friend...

  • As do I.

This band gives freedom of expression to heterosexual males. Thats just the way it is.

  • SO wel put, my brother.

  • Cheers, man.

  • Interesting i've never heard this version, what's it on?

    Overproduced imo

  • It's on their s/t album..

  • umm it's the one from the album?

  • Some of Johnny Marr's best guitar work can be found in this song. He was a genius at coming up with catchy melodies.

  • that he was rrr.. william is one of the best works of art guitar wise.. that constant strum of the cords..

  • i was born in 1990.. but i trip out.. ive always liked music ahead of my time.. but when i hear the smiths.. it takes me back to the happiest times of my life.. living in oregon.. they always played the smiths up there on the radio.. but california is a beast compared to oregon.. i was living here first.. but i miss those happy days.. the smiths help me re live those days.....

  • I heard the Hatful Of Hollow version first, but I'm starting to like this one better - the inclusion of the piano makes it superior.

  • yeah and the drums are more complimentary, in the hatful version the snare is too overpowering. annoying even

  • @Ebaux69 I agree, this version is perfect. Such a beautiful song.

  • Totally agree.

  • Comment removed

  • years on and this is still my favorate tune ...and i eventually found the one who could pin and mount me like a butterfly !!

  • great song. brings back college memories...yeah, I'm old.

and any song that uses the phrase 'bees knees' is ok with me. see also: Camera Obscura's "Let's Get Out of This Country".

  • Some of the most beautiful lyrics Morrissey has ever come out with.

  • this is one of my favorite rock songs ever...it especially wrenches my heart to hear all the melodies weaving in and out of each other. "take me to the haven of your bed" is one of the most beautiful lines i've ever heard, and the song's meaning in general...so beautiful...

  • I'm starting to think this is my favourite Smiths song. Any song that can rival I Know It's Over must be special...

  • nice song to relax to.

  • havn't listened to this in years, sounds better than ever

  • I always loved the complementary bittersweet piano keys following "you pin and mount me like a butterfly" @4:04

  • @mharrin5507 they are my favourite part of the entire song :)

  • @mharrin5507 Paul Carrack played the piano parts.

  • @Coppertunes Aah ok!

  • @mharrin5507 But what does that mean??

  • this song is beautiful

  • this was the very first song i heard by the smiths. i cant remember a song that has been just as absorbing on the thousandth listen as it was on the first. among all the great smiths songs this is still my favourite.

    thank you moz

  • Yes, this is the best version, I agree.

Does anyone know who his outside lyrical influences were/are?

Can't understand why people think such genius writing/composing is depressing. If I was locked in a room all day in the dark listening to the Smiths, I'd think I was in Heaven!!!!

  • I think people mistake their lyrics because they don't have that wry, off color intelligence that it takes to really "get" the Smiths. One really needs to be of a special breed, so to speak, to appreciate their ethereal genius...

  • I guess you are just being inflammatory on purpose?

  • Not at all. Not sure how you reached that conclusion. I was actually complementing tacboop1 on his/her great musical taste.

  • Didn't mean it that way. Everyone is tuned in to different "types." For example, I'm not tuned in to certain types of music, and don't get them. To each his own... Again, nothing negative meant.

  • You can certainly be stupid and like The Smiths, but I do agree with crv110 that it takes a higher level of intelligence to fully appreciate. Moz's standards of lyrical writing are at a significantly higher level than others.

His use of poetic refrain, alliteration, metaphor, etc cannot be ignored. It's true poetry.

"It's time that the tale were told of how you took a child and you made him old." Most people would never understand that this is a metaphor describing a child's first love.

  • Subtle beauty and lyrical elegance.... to me, at least.

  • I am an elementary school teacher and I played this song for my kids today. To a child, they are accurately described the metaphors and alliteration in this song even though most of them are Retards and learn while in cages. Just some anecdotal evidence to add to the discussion.

  • Don't down rate people in general. We've been brainwashed to want MONEY and THINGS, songs like this go against that. It's important to show people the beauty of songs like this, to remind us that we are human. NOT money making, consuming robots.

  • Exactly how I explained this to my friend the other day. Doesn't matter about what other people think, there will always be some out there who is utterly bewildered by you!

  • This song reminds me of the beauty of the things that money can't buy- love, warmth, the priceless feeling of togetherness.... The bittersweet anguish of love, the longing of another...

  • well said mate, well said.

  • Couldn't have said it better myself.

  • This (the original, I believe) is 100 times better than the version on Hatful of Hollow.

  • Agreed. This version is much better...

  • you can pin and mount me like a butterfly.

    Best line ever.

  • funny thing is morrissey didnt write that line. he didnt write i dreamt about you last night and fell out of bed twice either. this song is the biggest example of his outside lyrical influences i think.

  • I don't quite get that line... somebody explain it?
