I remember being about 6 years old sitting under my blanket in awe of a backlit color screen after playing on a gameboy pocket. I'd sit under that blanket and listen to the theme of this song till the lynx's batteries ran dry.

Of course, Atari didn't design the Lynx...they bought it from Epyx. Still, for the time, the size of the screen, # of colors, stereo sound and 'flipability' for left-handed players were nice touches. I had a Lynx II until it was stolen. S.T.U.N. RUNNER was amazing on it. ;-)

I remember playing this game on a friend's Atari Lynx back in the early 1990's. it was one of the most advanced games I've ever seened or played. Atari Lynx was a powerful little system in its day.

Lynx had some nice processing power, but it could only show 16 colors at once. GBC games look better as a result.

@Beantherio Well as far as I know The lynx was big, chunky and still somewhat portable (you can just barely fit it in your pocket) But the game boy did gave better titles and was much smaller. so they might have not been able to put as many components in, But those are just my thoughts

I rented on of these once a few nights when it came out.  And what you guys arent mentioning is the fact it wasnt just color but also featured "scaling and rotation". 2 features that home systems would NOT see untill the SNES years later. From what I recall this thing had terrible battery life and its sheer size would have kept you from pocketing it on most occasions.........great unit though. VERY ahead of its time

This game alone was better than anything the original gameboy had to offer. Used to have this game and beat it in no-time flat. I always hated the Gameboy but still bought it because there were too many games to ignore. But it was still a crap system, nevertheless.

@frigginjoe The Atari Lynx was the most advanced game console on the market when it was released in 1989. Just look at the early Epyx titles.

Blue Lightning is really terrific. Somebody needs to record a video of the canyon run. That was a spectacular lever - especially with the afterburners on.

The same could be said of video tapes. Betamax was technically superior to VHS in almost every way, but VHS won the war because its tapes were cheaper to make and sell, and that's what killed Betamax in the long run.

@Felamine I mean look at the wii its beating the 360 and ps3, the ps2 beat the original xbox , the playstation beat the nintendo 64, the 2600 beat the intellivision, the nes beat the 7800, the gameboy beat the gamegear, ds beat the psp... and so on... everything in this list that was beat, was much better hardware than the winning system. There may only be one time in history where the more powerful system has outsold its competitors, but I cant think of one time, im just leaving myself an out.

wow this looks the same graphics as game boy color but game boy color came out in 1998 and this came out in 1990 wow u would of thought they would have improved by then. if the gbc had the same grahics as gba then it would of improved from this. even the gamegear was like it too wtf. the origninal gmaeboy should of looked like this. but no its in shitty black and white. gamegear and lynx was a better buy than the gameboy in my opion and id rather have a gamegear or lynx than a gbc.

Yep... Stronger then the Gameboy Color. It has a 6502 that was about as fast as a regular Gameboy, however it also have a 16bit graphics chip that's twice as fast as the GBC processor plus a 16bit coprocessor. The Lynx also had the same amount of RAM as the GBC... The Lynx was just too much hardware too soon.

You know the expression, once you go Lynx, everything else stinks. My best chum had a Gameboy and I mocked him for it. The crappy platform games, the b&w graphics, etc.

I wish the Lynx had been more successful. Can you imagine how awesome a new generation Lynx would be? Nintendo DS what? Gameboy Advance my ass.

Atari needs to get their shit together and blow the competition out of the water again.

Too bad that Atari doesn't exist anymore. Only the name is still used, but that's not the same company anymore. Actually, the company closest to what once was Atari, is Activision. That company was started in the early 80's by runaway Atari people. That's also why the best Atari games were made by Activision.

I chalk it up to where Atari and Nintendo were in the video game industry at the time. Nintendo was the undisputed king of video games, and Atari was known as an old company that had failed and been sent packing seven years earlier ago. As for me, I never owned a Gameboy, but I had two Lynxs. ;)

I've got Electrocop on my Lynx II, Epyx were the creators of the Lynx before they sold it to Atari, it's no wonder that Electrocop and Blue Lightning have such good graphics, I've never played Blue Lightning. The Lynx didn't do well, because it was expensive, had very poor battery life, and was not well made, the plastic casing of my first Lynx II cracked when I dropped it on the floor back in 1996, the AC Adaptor socket broke very easily as well.

Battery Life, and amount of batteries. Game Boy (not gay boy) only needed four batteries, and Lynx needed 6. and Game Boy lasted 20 hours, but Lynx only lasted 4 to 6. Also, the Lynx was way more expensive, and lacked a good collection of good games, While Gameboy had a better collection. The Lynx wasn't a terrible system, it just couldn't compete. same story as Sega Game Gear. I am not a Nintendo Fanboy.

Yeah I just picked up a LYNX and Warbirds surprised the crap out of me! They really did crap a ton of processing power into a handheld for 1989. The same year the Gameboy came out and much earlier than the Game Gear its got more power than both combined!
