One thing I loved about Swordfish was that it bucked the trend of most thrillers, in that the 'hero' doesn't really win in the end. Gabriel is a black ops operative, so it isn't surprising that he can out-think a computer hacker. Gabriel admits he is a criminal but is willing to do what it takes to protect his country, whether it's murder or sacrificing himself. The juxtaposition of the principles is perfect (Stanley's idealistic extremism vs. Gabriel's patriotic extremism).

There are so many things to like about Swordfish. Its a thriller that happens to contain hacking as a plot element and this seems to have helped it avoid becoming dated. It has an ensemble cast who manage to make the film more than the sum of its parts and it doesn't have a goody-goody ending. I think the film-makers took a brave stand in allowing Gabriel to win after all, rather than having too many 'Ah-ha!' twists to the ending, which would've sucked.
