  • What a trip, awesome effort, can i be cheeky and ask how much it cost you roughly?? in good old British Pounds..cheers stu.

  • U lead an exciting life!

  • AWESOME!! Must have been very fun trip, pics are everything I was hoping to find on here.. Would love to plan the same. We have ridden in several 250 -1k races here in the U.S. and Mexico.. looking for a street legal two wheeler to take through 7800 mile -epic adventure. Probably a 650, looking at a Harley new off road model.

    @NomadGSA

Do you have contact info to share, thanks for posting your trip!

  • Great shots, thak's for sharing. Have acheived first step of obtaining xl650r, sweet baby, Nomad, how can i get on to do list? got no one to ride with.

  • @NCJUTT dont worry bout no one to ride with, everytime i venture out on my bike, i meet someone to chat too and things generally develop from there, alternatly bike meets, forums ect ul be cool dont worry, just get out and enjoy a few road trips ,,,see you on the road somewhere :)

  • 9 bikes, 10 guys.... somebody riding 2 up?

  • i just added the dakar to my bucket list

  • simply amazing i wander if i can do it on my 690. but for shore going on the bucket list

  • Did you do this with Kudu? Looks like their land cruiser and we did pretty much the identical route so guessing you did? Did the trip with them a couple of years back (Feb 08) - fantastic! How did the 1200 fare in the deep sand? I found picking up a 650 8 times an hour exhausting when playing in the sand. Can't imagine what it'd be like with a 1200!

  • anyone that slags a R1200GS has not riden one, the swiss army knife of bikes, not the best at anything - but very good at everthing, fun on trails and great in canyons handles superb and comfy on freeways, have done 22000 in 9 months on mine can not ride it enough, crashed it 4 times pick it up and off it goes, no drama and no chain

  • i would love to do this or somthing like it. my dreem is to cross the austrailen outback on a bike ( west to east not north to south) im just looking at geting the funds together!!!

  • @millerboys2006 I was thinking about the same trip true the desert. I know somebody did it with car.

  • Ride the KTM...right...I'll take my GSA over either of my KTM's...even with the EE seats..why is it KTM can get it all right except for the friggen seat ???

  • Loved that video and the music. Well put together.

  • Fantastic vid - shout from PMS Pattaya!

  • Well, I take it my old fizzzzeeeee 50cc from the 70s will beeee neeeeee gooooood, lol

I think my 89 xtz 750 with 16,000 will nail it, I'm not sure about my arse.

  • exelente video el papa de los viajes en bmw..

  • Nine bikes, ten guys?? You mean someone rode pillion all that way?

  • why did the maker of this slide show choose Indian music while he was crossing the North to west African continent! Any arabian music should have been better.

  • awesome mate, i dream about making such a trip with my GSA...

  • My dream to participate to this excursion!

  • Awesome picture video. Tell me, what software did you make the video with. Sorry if its in the credits..still watchin'

Lovely pictures, shame some of the white writing didn't quite show up that well.

I hope you road-kill grilled that snake! Paddy

  • How much would a adventure like this cost?

  • a good sponsor :P

  • is it a good motorcicle for a trip like long way down?

  • Amazing. My dream.Congratulate Guys on their trip

  • The best all around bike ever produced. I'll be riding my GS until I can't ride anymore. I have a 91 R/100/GS and I love that piece of machinery more then anything else I've ever had. I am a mechanic and I especially love how easy they are to maintain and how little of it they take. I've put 53K on it in 5 years and bought it with 40 on it. , I'm gonna throw a party when I hit the 100K mark and I get a whole new row of zeros. Great adventure vid, I'm blessed with fantastic roads in Indiana.

  • anyone who buys a KTM, missed the memo haha ..

wanna go round the world buy a Bimmer

  • amazing. I d like to join to the tour where real guys come together. Serious. Kindly check my down to earth city tours with my R 1200 GS. My sincere respects.

  • Awesome

  • Great video, although you must have had your up & downs, to be able to say that you've done it & the great photo's to show where you've been...how cool is that!

It would be so good to do a long trip with a couple of mates, I see you had a couple of injuries but looking back now...would you be the same had you not done the trip?!

Now that's something to tell your kids & grandkids about for sure, good one nomad!

  • Great pics indeed too bad i will never have 7 weeks of vacation all together for a trip like this! :(

  • BMW GS Adventure

The Best bike for round the world Adventure - nothing comes close - sure there are bikes lighter - faster - more bhp - but for true adventure riding in comfort - nothing comes close - end of ...... :-)

  • If you buy into that hype, sure. They are overpriced, overweight. Less about the bike, more about the trip/rider.

  • @skater1on1 ......too true - expensive - especially when you start to add the bits!!!! Heavy? - For sure - old tech ... The trip was awesome, you can do that - as most did on a 650 no problem ... and more fun when it got tough .... I would given the chance and the money to do it again and again .... we have all got at least one of these rides in us .... do it!

  • @NomadGSA

dude is it save to go trough west africa

if i know it was save i would go to my

    mother land with the bike.

Sorry for the bad english to lazy to correct the grammar

  • @NomadGSA

I think i can easily agree with you.

I drive the usual GS - and was never leaving the continent, but i would say: also on a "long way down" you have to own in general a travel-bike and only second a off-road-bike. Nobody TRAVELS off-road.. you drive almost never in "impossible" terrain for moto-cross... and for dirty streets and stones it is absolutely no problem to use the GS. Of course you have to change the GS on real Enduro-tyres. But thats all.

  • @NomadGSA Great vid, great ride, congrats!,...... I just made my first trip in my GS 1150 from Mexico City to Mexican port in the pacific, Puerto Escondido, through the Oaxaca Sierra, it was not such a long trip but ir worth it a lot, just doing it, changing my life! ...

  • @NomadGSA

Sorry to say that, but you can ride there with every bike with right wheels and height. It must be stable only without any electronic shit. Meanwhile i would prefer the older bikes for this. The newer the more filigree the bikes are.

  • GS 1200 ADV - expencive parts, powerless and very heavy for off road I drive it for 2 years with 28.000km...

This year I bought KTM 990 ADV and KTM is much better bike for everyting.

  • Except that KTM did not want to sponsor the Longway down because of fear of reliability problems and together with bad publicity - if they had faith in their bikes like BMW did then they would have said yes ... they missed a trick and millions of pounds in sales - GS ADV - Aircooled (oil cooled) with shaft drive - the best -was then and still is - good luck with your overheating and broken water hose in the desert - and don't forget to take loads of chains and sprockets too ........ lol ;-)

  • ...sorry I meant the Longway Round ... not Longway down .... ;-)

  • ...try riding around the world with one - KTM will follow you with 10 escort cars and several helicopters - don't get me wrong KTM's are great bikes - but not for global travel - ride safe mate - ;-)

  • I have a KLR 650, it'll do most everything your bike does for 1/4 the cost :)

  • @LatiTea18 That's the comment everybody keeps repeating and it's getting a bit tiresome and very, very short-sighted. Fact of the matter is that these guys DID the LWR tour. They drove it. Sure, there was help closeby, but the cars followed another route (if you even watched it completely, you should know). LWD was less challenging, but the did the driving themselves and the bike made it.

So...what's the problem? BTW: you can do RTW on ANY bike.I went offroad in Morrocco on a BMW RT... ;)

  • @LatiTea18 Is that 2 or 3 water pumps? I seem to remember the KTM people here telling me to replace the water pump as routine maintenance every 10,000 miles.

  • Comment removed

  • @LatiTea18 It was a professional production. If you do such an adventure you might as well make some bucks with it. That means you have tons of film equipment, and things for the crew. You need cars.

In the fist production Long Way Round the first choice bikes was a KTM. Then KTM reconsidered saying they were afraid the riders would fail.

IMO they were afraid the biked wouldn't survive the challenge.

BMW sponsored then the bikes, and the bikes did great. Big marketing fail for KTM if you ask me

  • @pjdaprinz Yes, of course. But you need not to be afraid about KTM. They would do the job similar. The KTM LC( is just a little different. A little more less comfort, but also not a wonder off the road.. you can use both for some long trips and adventures. And both cannot give a assurence ... if you are looking for adventures and experience

  • Right on nomad, maybe LT18 should remember KTM has only been around what 10-15yrs? BMW has been round before my old man, & he's 83 & been on bikes since 1938!

Love LWR & LWD but I think Charley needs to chill out a bit, pulled 1 too many wheelies & his jealous streak came out when Eve wanted to come with them on LWD....talk about cut the air with a knife!!!

I read on the web that the boys will be doing South America next yr, so that will be one to watch out for...mid yr.

    Cheers.

  • That's interesting because a stock ktm adventure weighs 4 pounds more and has 5 less horsepower and 17 less ft lbs than a stock gs. The adventure r only has 3 horsepower more then a gs adventure where as the gs adventure still has 17 more foot pounds of torque.

  • A stock ktm 990 weighs 4 pounds more, has 5 less horsepower and 17 less ft lbs of torque then a stock gs. The 990 r only has 3 more horsepower but still has 17 less ft lbs of torque.

  • great pictures and great music!

  • And I love the BMW of course!!!!

  • Awesome!!!! I"m sixteen now and i dream about something like this.U got to do something like that atleast once in your life. 5 stars + favorites!!!!!sory for my bad english.Pozzz from Croatia!!!!!

  • I hope i get to do that some day

  • sensational stuff......if I could...I would get every person on the planet to experience something such as this....because as us riders know....THIS is truly LIVING. I have done a few trips in Australia(where i live), greatest experiences I've ever had, all riding away together in the beginning= absolute freedom. Keep it up!

  • shame i only have a license for a 250=(

  • Awesome dude. Kudu do great trips. I did Alaska to Argentina solo and would love to guide their new Americas trip. I'm now a paramedic, and they're hiring - more motorcycle adventures here we come!

  • Let me hear the story behind that anaconda :D

  • Well you are riding along when you see a very large snake - you panic and crash .... thank god it was dead before I went over ii ... ;-)

  • Must have been a great trip. Entertaining stuff - thanks for sharing.

  • I need to do something like this before I die.

  • i agree

  • @DEFORCER me too!!

  • Enjoyed the video, thanks for sharing! Awesome trip no doubt, its on my list, or maybe the other direction to Egypt. But Africa on a bike, by all means... its on the list. I've ridden Anchorage, Alaska to Los Angeles, Califonria solo - also pretty spectacular.

  • Congrats!

  • Nice trip- Was there a support truck with fuel, food, water? or were you able to manage from town to town? How many Flats????

  • Yes support 4x4 picking up the bits behind. You need the extra food, water and fuel during most days - plus spares etc. 9 bikes two puntures - very lucky. Two hospitals, 2x broken bones, dozen crashes, the ride of your life....

  • when I was a biker I made 2 journeys from lancashire to spain, twice to holland and 1 to germany riding a honda cb 750

cb 5 and a 1200 suzuki bandit I know it's not africa but still it felt adventerous.

  • Ive got me the 800GS last spring, my father got a 1200GSA. I think one needs a lot of practice for such a tour. But i would love to drive this one =)

  • No need for practice - your F800GS is the best bike for this trip - and you don't have to ride on the sand - I didn't or should I say couldn't.... go for it :-)

  • So you recon the F800 will do the job as god, if not better due to it being lower/lighter?

How did you manage to avoid the sand in Senegal? Ive been there and can't imagine to made it far without it.

and, how was your bike after the trip? Does it still run you OK?Was it new for this trip?

  • F800GS would be great - take spare chains and sprockets(including front). Could not avoid sand - fell off 5 times. It was new and the bike apart from rear shock was perfect and I just sold it ... Crashes really well with no damage ...

  • Sand is really no problem when you start on the dirt and them move up to the road. If you're going to teach your kids to ride, get them a dirt bike and let them go loose in the sand. Then when you go on trips with them, they'll feel more comfortable on the sand than the road.

  • the best all terrain bike EVER!

  • Beautiful VIDEO!

  • very nice pictures

will do that one day I think its great to go on a big yourney on a motorcycle

  • nice contrast

  • Nice trip. Would never use a 1200GS myself. But that's because I usually travel alone. Good luck lifting that massive bike alone after dropping it :).

For tar road or in areas where help can be easily obtained, it is certainly on my shortlist of dreambikes. If I ever get my hands on that kind of money...haha.

  • 1200 GS Adventure is my only bike-so no choice really. I was with a group so no problems geting help. It is the best bike for everything except deep sand-in sand it's rubbish. Great on gravel or hard pack.

Yes it ££££'s loads, but worth every penny.

  • Great experience. I also see that you like photography, nice shots. Congratulation.

  • WOW i fucking LOVE this bike

  • it must cost a small fortune to do something like that. id love to do it! maybe one day when ive got some money

  • Love it. Who sings the song?

  • Karsh Kale Realize-Distance...this song comes on every new computer running windows vista.

Makes a great sountrack.....as soon as I heard it I knew it was right for the clips...

  • Good video and song.

  • Some idiot reported me for using the song from KK - it was protected by copywright and I had to change it. Next time when someone asks me who sings the song-I'm staying quiet.....

  • The making of this video shows that you really enjoyed this, this is my dream to do this i would really like to do London to newyork that is a dream for me and just do the same as Charlie Borman and Ewan Magregor did.

So hope you enjoyed your self Guys!!

Hopefully i will be doing the same some time (Y)

  • Panasonic-make that dream real. I always wanted to ride down through the Sahara well in to Africa...I waited and waited and then the time and money was right....I did it. You take your time, when the time is right you will know...I now fancy shipping the bike over to Canada and then ride across the States, do the desert ng road thing....maybe in 5 years......Good luck-live the dream.
