The Pingpong virus uses an undocumented instruction (MOV CS, AX) which only works on the original 8086 and not later processors - that may be why you couldn't get the proper versions to work.

The rule of the bouncing ball on the screen is based on the last digit of the character's ASCII code, if the last digit is 3, it would bouncing as a line; if is 5, as a row; if is others, no direction change. Some variants may has different rules.
In English DOS, the virus doesn't slow down machine too much, but in some other, for example in UCDOS, a tool which to make DOS to display Chinese, the ball would seriously slow system annoyingly.
@94batiman It probably uses a hardware interrupt to paint the 'ball' to the screen, which exists regardless of the fact that DOS can't multitask well.
