Wait a sec, let's not forget the great under-rated in my opinion Fred Thomas. I saw him live once in Oakland with JAmes Brown a few years before JB passed on. I shouted his name loud. FRED THOMAS. I said it again and he looked up with a curious smile. It was a tame crowd, but it was the only way I could ever tell him how much he means to me.
@TheBrowndawg Fred was before Bootsy. He plays on Pass the Peas & many of the early classics. Finger style.
He's on Reverbnation. Don't blame yourself. We've all been kinda tricked into paying more attention to the likes of one hit wonders or whoever used his bass playing for their own thing. One of many of course. I even admit liking some sampled things, but the OG's never get their due respect. American Idol Bieber Fever, Lil Waune madness. haha
@RikJamezBich yeah i cant stand any of that shit you mentioned even the sampled stuff, ive always been a blues, hard rock and psychedelic kinda man but the bands on the daptones label have got me searching back into old funk, im particularly digging the early stuff like the jbs, early funkadelic, johnny guitar watson and stuff like that, the later stuff from the mid to late 70's isn't really to my taste. i just love music played by actual musical instruments i guess you sould say.
@TheBrowndawg Watson is some of the best anywhere. Roy Ayers, Mandrill, Kool & the Gang before they sold out was super tight, old Cameo before Word Up, used lots of horn sections. Luckily, youtube has many B side cuts. If you find a guy on youtube by the name of G-Strong, that fool posts LOTS of crucial tracks.
Im not proud to say that i stole this album from a record shop in london, back in 87 !!! that old record store, at the back of what used to be the virgin mega store.... is still open, till today ,,,, im so ashamed of myself ....
I liked part two of this cut. At the end when the horns come back in, it's raw and to the point. Short stabbing James Brown horn hits. The horns come in on 1 and 3 while the drummer holds the back beat straight and on 2. This band didn't stay with James long enough to grow in the direction this song opened a door to. I'm sorry that didn't happen. I am still curious where the feeling inside this song would have grown into; had the band stayed with James and fed off of this atmosphere.
@fnknebula yeah, theres a different atmosphere to this one, especially the guitar part at the start of the song. uncharacteristic george benson style chordal solo towards the end of the song. reminds me a bit of the CTI records minus the cheez factor. really like this song. never heard it before.i liked your descriptions and observations. good comments.good ears.
@oliverecords Do you have part two of this song? I had the 45, but it is pretty scratched up. I liked the end of part two when the horns come back in. Short lines with a lot of impact. The snare is in between the horn hits and it fits perfect. If my 45 wasn't so scratchy I would upload it. Thanks for the upload.
Saw the JBs when they were at Bailey Hall at Cornell around '72 or so.

I think this LP is underrated because of its ugly sleeve :) .
Anyway, I love flute, I love funk, I love the JB's, any line-up.
oliverecords 2 years ago 15
You might be right. Not much work went into the record or the sleeve - just a set of amazing tunes that JB had lying about...

An LP from 1972 called Food for Thought by the JBS. Most underrated record I know - it's crazy that you can't buy it new.
