  • He kinda sounds like Shia la elf

  • i got u. thnx. it was v helpful

  • I just found your lessons - they're awesome, thanks!!

  • Exactly!I bet this modern chord crap has no connection to old world music.Hence it's a curse against us.I'm into clusters and inner/outer sectors.Hence a train. For the self gets replacement for other memmories.Inner gets outer/outer inner.

  • I'm a drummer. How the fuck do you guitarists memorize the chords. I remember them for like 5 minutes and then when I try to play a song I'm like "WTF WAS THE FINGERING FOR C# AGAIN?! AHHHH THIS IS TOO COMPLICATED"

So I usually give up and pick up my drumsticks again. I want to learn guitar, but all the chords are killing me. They should make a guitar where all chords can be played like

    -

    -

    -

    3

    3

    1

    Because that's easy ^_^

  • @xFudgeSocietyx repitition. until you do it in your sleep.

  • @xFudgeSocietyx You can play all chords like that, they are called power chords....

    or also like this

    1

    1

    2

    3

    3

    1

  • @xFudgeSocietyx you think drumming is easier, I suck at drums but I play Guitar

  • @xFudgeSocietyx dont put youreself down drumming is hard especially metal and heavy metal drumming .... dont worry if you keep at it youlll be a good guitarist aswell plus people have really hard problems when learning guitar to so no need to fret you'll be good in no time

  • @xFudgeSocietyx i couldn help but see your comment one thing i reccomend is just an hour of practicing stumming patterns with the chords u r having problems with, but no matter what you do dont stop moving your fingers even if u mess up keep playing all the way through, it shuld help with the muscle memory

  • @xFudgeSocietyx i have to memorize guitar bass and sax lol

  • @xFudgeSocietyx maybe thats why your a drummer.... no but i remember in patterns, find what works for you

  • @xFudgeSocietyx Play in drop tuning ;)

  • @xFudgeSocietyx you would be playing a power chord like that if that's tab. I believe that is F5 but I might be wrong about that.

  • Nice Job

  • Good video helped me but does anyone agree that the C F C G chords 1:44 don't work?

  • @SebestianGrove i think it works, depends how you use it. Although just have fun with it and make up your own pattern. Endless possibilities.

  • @SebestianGrove Agreed, the F just doesn't sound cool in it.

  • Thanks! I was trying to find the key/chords for a song... and I did!

  • Mike Posner!!!?

  • Dude..how can you teach playing by ear? you cant teach it brah

  • House of the rising sun is an exception to the 'key is the first chord rule'.....anyone know any others ??

  • i have a favorite song that i don't know the guitar chords...can you please find the chords for me.....

  • hi what is your email?

  • @karenpeople28 leave questions on my website (my name) net

  • Playing by ear, to me, is a gift. Walt. Thank you for our courage, to do this video, both for using Mary... and for doing this. Some just need t awaken their talents. Can you do one on deciphering jazz chords or so-called alternate chording. Th major 7th's are easy to hear, then the m7b5's and 9th chords, and diminished. BUt what about those C7b9, Bb9#11. But you know what - you helped me resolve my own comment. Just keep at it, listen, even improvise, but primarily have FUN!! Gracias.

  • @tTheChief the chief!!!! haha oh, and play with other musicians too! we learn through each other

  • Very helpful. The one thing i can never get down when learning guitar is learning how to recognize the chords within a song.

  • @Auroneld by ear? or by sightreading?

  • @waltribeiro By ear. Its probably the only thing that I wish I could get the knack of. Of course, ive never taken any formal courses for guitar so I haven't been introduced to specific chords.

  • very very helpful sir, thank you verymuch.

  • very very helpful sir, thank you verymuch.

  • Very helpful. I try to figure out the key of a song by hitting some notes while I listen to it. When I get something that matches, then I've found the key. Then I come up with a chord progression from there. But the gist of both approaches is to find the key of the song. Thanks for the post.

  • @88spaces glad i can help you!

  • Thanks Buddy..Im giving it a shot.. Thanks for sharing. Took a long time to figure it out for me. Thank you

  • @Falemanu45 after you fail on the first 1000 shots, keep giving it a shot. i'm serious. don't give up!

  • @kage6565 hahaha

  • EDCD EEE- DDD- [EEE-]{is supposed to be EGG}

  • @hanzimaster so confused...

  • did you drop off that ritalin Rx yet

  • @RandyFoxKiller was never on it

  • How about the bass line ?? I think it's the easiest way when you're listening to the bass line because they usually play the bass root note for each chord then you can get it that way and then it's really quite easy to figure out the mode if that minor or major..

  • @realjuvelive true. bassline helped you know the root, and then you can build the chord off that!

  • @waltribeiro But that is not always easy though

  • @realjuvelive no one said it was easy

  • @waltribeiro But hey we can play the melody of the song for example on piano and we can figure out that way which notes in the song then we play the scale that fits with melody.

  • @realjuvelive yep that works

  • @waltribeiro it's another good way for example if we play the melody on the white keys on the piano and it sounds major, then we can say that the key of a song is C because you know no sharps no flats in the C major diatonic Scale.

  • @realjuvelive or A minor.. which is the same, technically

  • Thanks bro !

  • @starblocketp i'm starstruck!

  • Thanks Walt, that was helpful. Also people should really practice their scales (e.g. minor-pentatonic) then when they find the key note they can apply he corresponding notes of the scale for that key... so then they can play along with the song through the scale notes of that key or use those scale notes of that key to help them map out the cord sequence.

  • @Humanfactor7 human!!!!!!

  • ma_ry had a li_ttle lamb - E D C D E E E.. so the guitar note for happy birthday to you or twinkle twinkle little star is... there goes my problem! i can't tell the note right away..

  • very nice lesson .... very useful tips ....

  • very nice lesson .... very direct n helpful .....

  • @irfanh86 yayaayayaya

  • u make it seem so easy.... i hate u =]

  • @iloveguitar94 hahah keep practicing!!!!!!

  • this lesson shined alot of light on my key dilemma thanks and hey can you make a couple more digging a slight bit deeper. ROCK ON

  • im glad you mentioned Green Day!!

  • PJ rocks

  • @hockeycuber101 you rock. yes. i arranged their music for orchestra!

  • just a very basic tidbit of information for those confused with keys.

the key of this was the key of "C" meaning C would be what i would call the root in my terms

    the musical alphabet is a b c d e f g

    since you're in the key of C the KEY would be c d e f g a b c.

there are number patterns out there that you would follow to learn the proper chords or notes for that key. in this, and in ALOT of things, it is the 1-4-5 pattern. notice our key C D E F G A B C, he played the chords C, F, and G. 1-4-5

  • @tetshou no prob tetshou

  • this is awesome

  • @3393ish you are

  • mad genious!

  • @superagnitio super!!!!!

  • Hey man, I was juste curious to know how did you succeed so good in playing music? was it lots of practice, university..?

  • good work man.. it was so easy to understand with "Marry had a little lamb"...

  • @robin2rock hah sweet

  • best "Mary had a little lamb" song ever

  • @Azerrrrr I dunno, Stevie Ray Vaughan's verson is pretty beast.

  • @Azerrrrr ever!!

  • This is so very cool of you, even if i don't get it. Thank You.

  • that was beautiful

    LOL thanks

  • Part of that sounded like behindbue eyes limp bizkit's version atleast P:

  • thanks man!

    awesome..

  • that G6 sounds like a chord from "behind blue eyes," oh great videos man! really really helpfull, cause most theory stuff is based to piano and its so cool to have it put to guitar, takes the spade work out of it for me :D

  • Great to see a musician playing by ear and showing how its done, Play by ear is a very advanced approach which begins sounding incompetent, ("shot out of a canon") but takes the player into far more fun music and more advanced ability. Its instinctual. Thanks. Subscribed!

  • @snowypetrel thanks for the kind words bro

  • I just wonder...has anyone heard of family chords before? check it out in google :)

  • helpful

  • sry im a total noob but how do u find the root?

and how do you find those chord after you find the first chord like how he found the C and immediately played the G then F. Do certain chords pair up with other chords?

  • Basically just listen to what note you think the song should resolve on, i.e. what does the progression sound like its trying to get back to? In that case it resolved on C, that note can make it sound finished.

His coming up with the chords wasnt that scientific, and im certainly no pro on guitar but I would see what notes (therefore what chords) where most prominent in the melody. If it rests on an F or an A for a little while, try sticking that chord in. Just one method really...

  • Find the key the song is in i.e. the key of C, and find out which notes are in that scale. In this case, the notes in the scale are C D E F G A B C

Common progressions use the 4th or 5th note after the first. In this case it was F. Just something to keep in mind.

  • @EsveldtCamine9 i've watched about five youtube videos on this and your comment is the best explantion of them all!!! you should make your own video, esveldtcamine9!

  • @EsveldtCamine9

If you watch the video he explained that. He went to an F and a G and it didnt work. Thats why he lingered on the C. If you mean he should have pointed it out fair enough.

  • Thanks buddy.

  • The phrase "shot out of a cannon" leaps immediately to mind.

  • @Hoopermazing why?

  • @waltribeiro You seemed a little manic... but it retrospect, it might have just been a result of your having edited out the dead air.

  • @Hoopermazing exactly. besides, i suck at editing video

  • Thanks for that man. It helped. God bless :)

  • yeah?

  • at 1.30 you say your saying on the C chord only, but whats the other one you play?

  • G :)

  • G bro.

  • Thanks. Excellent video. My first step to finding chords!

  • I know how to play this song in VIOLA!!!!!!

  • i have the same exact guitar as you and i dont get it

  • can someone please explain playing in keys...like A minor and C major...I don't understand what that means for me if I want to solo to a song in A minor for instance.

  • Go to my website and do a search for the word 'Relative'. What you want to know about are called Relative Minor Chords!

  • Yes, look up parallel and relative keys.

  • @Ishbu101

It means that you should use a minor scale in the key of A. It dosen't have to be Natural Minor (A B C D E F G), you can use Harmonic, melodic, phrygian or any Minor scale which inlcudes A C and E. Those notes are chord notes for A Minor. And a real good tip is to play the chord notes especially on the 1st and 3rd beat, and other notes inbetween

This is actually in this video, but not mentioned. The first chord is C (C E and G). There's allways a chord note on the down beats

  • I think we all got a little tear in our eye in the end of the video. :)

  • me too.

  • Thanks - very clear!

  • thanks man , unlike other vids this was actually easy to understand and really helped a lot, keep doing great vids

  • But if you use some outside chords that you don't really hear when you listen to Mary had a little lamb, you won't recognise it necessarily.. but good to know anyway.. Music theory is so important to know, i wish i knew all this music theory 2 years ago.

  • This was exactly what i needed now.

It was well made and it tought me how to find the chords which i can't find on the internet

  • Hey Walt! I play guitar and I've been working on this for a few months now. Finding chords that match a meloday etc. This video helps so much! You explain in such a detailed but simple way for the novice or intermediate. Your the best!

  • Thanks thats really helpful

  • Glad it helped!

  • haha! Really good!

  • Good vid. Wish it could've helped me. I can play lots of chords but notes and keys puzzle me. At church when they say "it's in F", I have no idea what they are talking about. I can hear what sounds good an what doesn't but am unable to play music with people.

  • BJ,

Go to my website ad click on the 'Video/Charts' tab. In there Under my Revision 3 shows is a video titled 'Chords C F and G'

That'll help you out so much!

  • Great help, though I can never figure out how long to play a chord for, unless it's a hymn and the chord is above a syllable in the lyrics and somebody is singing. Stupid, I know.

  • No, not stupid at all actually. Keep at it, you'll get it!

  • This is great; I don't play the guitar all that well, but I think this will help a little better. Thanks muchisimo! :D

  • You're great at guitar. Stop thinking like that.

  • Thank you ! You`re really good at teaching.

  • Aww thx man! Glad I can help :)

  • sick video! ive been working on guitar for a while now and ive been finding new ways almost everyday to throw in chords that work. And singing it out really works. so try it out cause its pretty sweet.

  • Yea it is cool to do it that way. Whatever works for ya!

  • excellent, one step closer now. thank you for this informative video.

  • No Prob! Your awesome. Don't forget to subscribe to the mailing list and check out my website. you may enjoy alot of the other tutorials. Stay cool phoenix!

  • You are a god , I wanna learn some songs by ear and this helps alot!

  • You have no idea how happy that makes me :) Keep rockin out!

  • That really helped! Thank you very much.

    Brian

  • Brian is in da house! Glad it helped!

  • Thanks, that does help.

    Brian

  • liking this, good stuff

  • I have a song I want to learn but there are no current tabs available online! Is there any site where someone can pick out the corects notes by listening to the song???

  • use your ear :) transcribe it.

  • how do i play an eighth note do I play it like a half note with to beat per count

  • I have a video for that called how to read music and a few more - there's alot of them here

  • yeah man, are you a drummer? an eighth note is counted 1+ 2+ 3+ 4+, 16th notes are counted 1e+a 2e+a 3e+a 4e+a, the pattern is that the number (8th note, 16th note) is how many beats there are in the bar, you get me?

  • Yeah, He mentioned one thing here I would like to reiterate. Music is just one thing (my personal motto). Rather or not if its Mary Had a Little Lamb, or a Led Zeppelin riff, or a Mozart melody; music is just one thing. Learn how similar Mary Had a Little Lamb is to a Led Zep riff and you will be happy campers. :) Compare the phrases and search for the guts in music. Start with something plain (a simple part of a scale) and then syncopate the phrase. Now you have a Led Zep riff. :) lol

  • are you deaf? Some of those vocal / guitar tone match up examples cracked me up. Just kidding man this is a good video and lesson.

  • how many instruments u play?? awesome

  • Great! Thanks!

  • thank you....

  • np!

  • great work

  • thx!

  • good job

  • thanks

  • i liked the ¨you always do¨ at the end.

  • Thanks for this....incredibly helpful. I'll probably think of a question to ask you about these sorts of things.

  • good stuff!!

  • great tutorial! I wish I knew how to play the guitar so I could have fun with those chords!
