Nice poetic translation... plus points since you made it rhyme.

But having a one-to-one correspondence of syllables makes singing in English lose correct intonation and overall "singability". I actually tried singing it myself but I end up fumbling or catching my breath.

i agree here, but also trying to make the words rhyme sorta took alot away from what you could of done to make them more like the original lyrics. i've made fandubs a million zillion times and it is really hard trying to rhyme things while keeping the songs original intent and since it seems that's waht you were going for, try again and see without trying to rhyme

Define "better". As it says in the comments, this translation is not necessarily 100% accurate and instead was aimed to be singable and generally flow better as an English song than a straight translation.

It was obvious it was done on purpose, and that's the point, it was bad. It gets in the way of the original artwork, and on top of that most of them can't even be read. People need to stop subtitling like this, it isn't cool, it just gets in the way. It's unprofessional, and just another way for people to measure e-peen.
