There was like, one of those big explosions near my home in Bellerose, New York. On Jamaica Avenue, there was a car fire, right down the side road which lead to my house and the other houses on my street. Someone was in there, but got out, thank god. The scary part was when we started to hear tiny bangs in the gas tank, then they got louder then the whole car blew up. It was a bigger explosion than in this video. Dude, the explosion effected the apartments it was in front of. Scary stuff!

A: clearly they do.

B: the reason firefighters extinguish car fires from the side or diagonally is because the bumpers can explode out. Ive seen it happen, almost took out a friends legs.

Moral of the Story: CARS CAN EXPLODE- they just dont explode like they do in the movies.

@thebleedenator With the exception of air bags, which are minor unless your in the car, and propane or LP cars, cars really can't explode unless there is something explosive in them. Explosion has a specific scientific definition.

What you heard was a tire popping which is no big deal. Do stay away from the bumpers as they really can shoot off if they have pressurized shocks.

Fuel tanks do not contain adequate oxygen and when heated contain no oxygen. they can burst though and spew fuel.

Do be cautious about getting hit with a chunk of hot rubber and realize that burning fuel may spew from underside of car, but really car fires are not that dangerous to passer by's and rescuers.

Many people die trapped in car fires because ignorant people watch hollywood flicks and are to afraid to help save lives.

My guess is that the explosion was the spare tire in the rear of the vehicle. Typically the fuel tanks don't build enough pressure to explode in car fires. However, I've seen plenty of tires explode as well as shocks and drive shafts.

Having been to a few car fires, i would say definitely not the fuel tank. Chances are it could have been a pressure can, like and aerosol in the back of the van or even one of the shock absorbers. The shockies always scare the crap out if me when i'm up close putting the fire out.

Great vid. Doesn't appear to be the gas tank to me though. Looks like a bleve from some freight in the back of the sprinter. If u pause/play to slow mo vid from 2:01 to 2:03 u can see a slight disruption in air prior to explosion in the upper left rear of window. Maybe I just have 2 much time on my hands.
