This one in video isn't too much representative... It takes too long to turn off stop light = bad or empty central sphere, mine turns off instant ... And it takes too long to raise up or lay down, definitely dirty lhm + filters, correctors...
@fuelmyfire69 There are probably quicker risers out there along with slower ones. I would say that this is representative of the Xantias out that are owned by people who just need a car to drive. Much like this example in the past. I've done a fair chunk of work fettling with bits and pieces since this was filmed and I would say that it is quicker now.
At the end of the day though, its now done 212,000 miles so I'm not expecting it to perform like a new car!
@ivandurak99 The specified amount of oil is in the system and there are no leaks. I guess you're refering to the STOP light being on?
STOP lights up as the system pressure isn't high enough due to the height correctors opening when I move the lever allowing fluid to rush through. Due to the design of the later pumps in particular, it takes a little while for pressure to build up again.
@steventean I imagine the odd one or two may have been imported but they were officially banned when originally on sale due to some strange US safety laws regarding self levelling suspension if I remember correctly.

Yeah, don't go under it without axle stands, because this system is very unreliable and is likely to fail. honestly, I don't know why they still bother with this gimmick; it doesn't ride any smoother than any other car its size, and from what I hear, it only keeps breaking.
You obviously haven't been in a well maintained example which will be MUCH more comfortable than that from ANY other mass produced car company at the time (bar other Citroens :P)
As for the unreliability, the example in this video has just turned 201,000 miles and the suspension has never failed me or any of it's previous owners. In normal service, the suspension is one of the cheapest to overhaul at around £25 a corner. Find me a shock absorber/spring setup at that price!
I drive a 1997 1.9 TD and its load carrying ability and ride is still better than a normally sprung car. In fact the ride gets smoother when loaded up. You almost get the cushion of air ride quality the old DS had. The only thing I hate is the price of front struts If they show signs of 'LHM misting'. Most MOT testers fail the car even though the system works properly. Only BX struts can be rebuilt as far as I know.
I think you've been in the wrong cars. When the spheres are old or ruptured the ride is hard and bouncy as hell. But with new spheres the ride is very smooth though not quite as soft as the CX or DS. The hydro system is reliable and is not as complex as most people think however 9 times out of 10, most faults with the LHM system is down to poor maintenance or lack of servicing. I'd still rather work on these cars than cars with conventional road spring suspension.
The car can be moved a short distance (a matter of feet) VERY slowly on either high or low. The car isn't man enough to take in all of the jolts possibly breaking something.
In service low setting, the front wheels will hit the bodywork when trying to steer plus there are other issues which means driving in this mode is unsafe. I've driven through flooded roads that have stopped 'normal cars.'
You may have responded to the wrong comment. I was stating that the car shouldn't be driven in service low setting unless car is being positioned for raising on ramp, 4 post lift etc. I've worked on cars for 22 years including older and new Citroens. My Xantia has a ride better than any other make. Only problem on my one was slight misting from front hydraulic struts but quality ride remains as good as ever. I've put 55,000miles on my Xantia since 2007. I wouldn't go back to a car with springs.

I only use service low when prepping car for work on hydraulic system. It can be moved safely in a straight line purely to get it inside garage/over a pit etc. I was merely warning others as I've read on many forums where owners have tried to steer cars in low mode and caused damage to steering ram and bodywork.

is that the 2.1 turbo diesel? coz i had the 2.1 td. great cars. brilliant ride quality. but the hydraulic pump in mine broke and it leaked in all the electrics, locking the boot and unlocking the back doors. and because my one was stolen recovered the locks were busted and i couldnt use the key to unlock the boot. the ride stiffened as well. and i lost the keypad startup thing and power steering. :(
I've known a couple that have had a worn seal in the hydraulic pump (easily replacable seal) leaking onto the alternator. Which caused a bit of havock!
They are ridiculously cheap second hand, as relyable as any Audi or Nissan, while they offer you the driving comfort of a Mercedes. You keep on laughing for thousands of miles.
Actually Alex Moulton admitted that Citroens system was better, after all he tried to copy it. Citroens have far better ride and handling that cars with Hydragas and it should be mentioned here that Hydragas is not self levelling unlike Citroens Hydropneumatic
Only problem I've experienced on my 1997 148,000 mile Xantia TD was leaking gearbox/diff seals and worn out suspension spheres - which are service items anyway. Even my old XM was totally reliable suspension wise and in general was a great car.
Look, I like the Citroen set up but it's too complicated and potentially problematic for what it needs to do. Hydragas (not hydrolastic) is relatively simple to set up, offers a good compact packaging solution, and it's also highly durable and reliable. Why do you think that Porsche used it for their 959 Paris-Dakar rally car?
Mate, we are talking here about advanced technology for afordable money. Can you buy Porshe at all? The smallest one with the springs?
Citroen's hydraulic is unique and many car companies would like to had developed such technology or at least to have the license to produce it these days.
But then, I am talking about durability and reliability. Alex Moulton once said that you could scrap the car with Hydragas, but never throw the Hydragas away. And he's right. Many of those systems have outlasted the age of the car. They weren't just fitted to Porsches, The Rover 100/Metro, for all its faults, used the system too, and many in the press felt that the ride it gave was far superior to any other small car out on the market.
lol a diesel xantia, I have 2 xantias the one from 97 with a 2,0 16v engine and a xantia from 94 with a 1,8 i engine, they are really great cars and Ive been driving bx too. I think Citroen makes the best cars in the world.
What is the fourth setting, There is 1. Service Low, 2..normal ride, 4.service high. There is a 4th notch

this is a really good car we us it of road beacause of the suspension. it has very good traction aswell with it being front wheel drive

Citroen also made a four wheel drive version of the Xantia and XM which are rarer than rocking horse sh*t. It used parts from the Peugeot 405 4x4.

It seems to me that you are telling here something without ever have been driven such a Xantia or other Citroën.
I have the Xantia X2, and there are many things which are better than on a car with common technic.
For example: This car has all the time the same level, even if there are one, two or five persons in the car.
there are more things, but maybe you shoud first drive such a car and make your own experiances...

Last tuesday l went to the garage to overhaul the suspension on all 4 wheels. Price ?
E 132 in total and it rides like a dream again. Do the same thing with conventional shock absorbers and it will cost you at least 4 times as much.

As you say, the laters S2 Xantias were available with the 2Ltr HDI Common rail diesel. This Xantia has the old skool indirect injection 1.9TD.
