Only thing about punk is, punk music is meant to reject the sophistication of styles of music such as classical music and bebop (as well as other forms of jazz). The lyrics are always very much punk, the harmonic structure, rhythm of AWS pieces are definitely a little more sophisticated than what you hear in your 'stereotypical' punk bands

And as far as whether or not AWS is punk: I don't really know what else you'd describe it as. They describe themselves as punk. But, in the end, listen to what you like, and don't worry if you can fit it into any sort of category or label. The genre of "punk" is so enormous that the lines get a bit blurred with some bands. I would call them Melodic Metalcore, or Melodic Hardcore if you want to get technical about it. But again, who cares? Great tune, great band.

@Roadkilljames Key part in the distinction is the term "melodic." Probably not heavy enough for melodic metalcore, I can grant that. I'd say Melodic Hardcore still fits the bill though. Other Melodic Hardcore bands include: Strung Out, Strike Anywhere, Ignite, Rise Against. The genre is huge, and encompasses a lot of different bands, which often stray pretty far from the original "hardcore" sound.
