  • Fantastic judgement. Brilliant car control.

  • @pkw20004

He was already past him when he cut.

  • that was not a clean manouvre, he simply cut the corner, should have been penalised for not giving back the position

  • The fact that the walls have since been pulled back from where they were in '96 makes this even more impressive.

  • lol this pass remember me of all who didn´t take the corksrew in forza motorsport. ^^

  • Brian Herta created 15 Youtube accounts just to dislike this video.

  • Love Zanardi but even I will say that was completely unfair and he should have given the place back to Herta.

You can't overtake someone by out-braking them and use the run off area as a buffer for going too fast... imagine if that had been a street circuit - Zanardi would have been in the wall...

  • @togalogs but......there were no walls.....

  • @bumiboka Yes, and you may check the 1998 Long Beach final - Zanardi owned Herta again, on a street circuit :-)

  • @DarthSparhawk

Hi ! that was sarcastic...bcs togalogs was crying too much !!

  • VIVA ITALIA

  • youve gotta have the balls of a bull to want to pass someone on the corkscrew with those kind of cars.

  • is this the guy who announced the xgames rally a few years back?

  • Go Leo Parente!

  • BOSS!!!

  • EPIC

  • Champ Car was the BEST racing during this time. Period. Better than F1, better than NASCAR , better than WRC. What the fuck happened? They had engines from Honda, Toyota, Ford, Mercedes. The fastest cars anywhere - speeds on ovals topped 240mph - Now Indycar is a joke. Drivers are lame, cars are lame. I miss those Champ Car days - Even F1 took notice - now Indycar is where Nascar rejects race. Very Sad.

  • I was at this race and as I said the day it happened, I will still say that this was absolute bull $hit. You can not go off the track to make a pass. Period. And the officials allowed it which was a travesty.

  • @Icosiol he made the pass then went of track

  • @notyetpro1 He made the pass with far too much momentum causing him to cut the course, which is (and was) illegal. When making a pass, the passing car must remain on track. There's no exception to this rule especially when the cars are not finished negotiating the corner.

  • Damn, that was ballsy.

  • LIKE A BOSS.

  • Zanardi was the fucking man. Such a shame what happened to him.

  • CART > IZOD

  • respect to alex, any different comment is badly forthcoming: that was the pass, this is the driver, the pilot, the man. god bless you alex

  • i miss ChampCart and i always will do it...

  • To Quote Joey Lawrence, Alyson & Amanda Michalka, Black Rob, and Mya, That pass on the Corkscrew was like WHOA.

That's why Alex Zanardi was one of the best Open-Wheel Drivers ever to race in The United States. Period. End of Story.

  • I still love you Bryan Herta!

  • should've been black flagged for that maneuver.

  • @k6k6k6Darkie

you have no magnificence in your soul at all do you?

  • @k6k6k6Darkie Black flagged for what? They would have had to made up a rule that he broke then, because he did nothing wrong. He was only guilty of wanting it more than Herta did.

  • jesus christ what bullshit

  • Man such crap...how the hell did this count?

His *outside* wheel was a car length and a half off the track on the *inside* on this move. Shit if Herta drove a car length and a half off the track as well, or if Zanardi kept a wheel on the track like you're supposed to, he would have gone nowhere.

But yeah CART ruled back then. What the hell ... stupid IRL bs.

  • @kinnokaizoku

I have no idea how the rules are for this, but they probably have it as you can not pass by going off the course.

and he passed him before he went off

  • best pass ever laguna seca!!!zanardi rulez!!!

  • That's just amazing. =D

  • @rubensfanbrazilbass I watched it in a roadhouse in austria, driving back from Monza to Germany after the italian grand prix. In the whole world you could follow these races those days. There was really nothing wrong with. And by the way, the man who became champion in this race was from california...

  • Isn't it ironic that this was telecast on EuroSport TV, won by an Italian in a British chassis (Reynard) with a Japanese engine (Honda), and that pass at the Corkscrew was seen by the 12 people that were in that turn at the time.

Hmmm, I wonder why ChampCar bit the dust.

  • I remember this as a kid, what an unforgettable pass!

  • Geez you cart blowhards still have sand in your vagina's for losing the war get over it and move on. FYI Indycar gos back to turbos in 2012,with

Chevy,Honda and lotus as engine suppliers.

  • @pcgeekamd The totality of Indycar lost the war to NASCAR and F1. Do your best to imagine if there had never been a split. Indy as we know it today has a long way to get back to where it was, and the series today could not be further from Tony George's original vision.

  • Comment removed

  • @kidsafe What part of move on you don't understand?did you see me type any compliments to Tony George? No,was i happy the split happened? off course not. but it seems that on every video i watch of American Open Wheel racing,i still see Bitching from the cart guys blaming TG for ills of the sport we love. last time i checked CART have as much blame as TG. Good news is TG is gone and the new guy Randy Benard is doing his best to fix the sins of the past.

  • epic win

  • Epic racing.

  • Can anyone give me a reasonable answer as to why F1 bypass such magnificent circuits as Laguna Seca and Road America?

  • @Pariah186 Cuz of at least 2 things (if not more):

    1) Safety ares are not filling the minimum requirements of FIA (pure crap imo)

    2) Road America is unfamiliar for most F1 fans whereas Indianapolis is "super famous" which makes Bernie Ecclestone ejaculate instead of focusing on making the sport more appealing to the crowd.

  • @Pariah186 Not enough seats. Not enough "high quality" paddock space and seats. Plus the fact that Laguna Seca hasn't been drawing the fans lately for the last years of Champ Car really shows a disinterest in the series. Plus Bernie likes "new" things to add on to his name an obviously RA and LS aren't new enough for him

  • @Pariah186 Infrastructure and lodging logistics

  • if this is f1 then zanardi gets 25 sec penalty, fine, etc, etc boring

  • Zanardi is the King of overtaking and that was a legit move, he gained the position way before he did that run off...

  • Those were the great days of real Indy car days. The PPG Indycar championship. The cars were awsome, powerful and full of great drivers.

Now................the "Izod championship"???????????????? One chasis, one tire, one engine. No, the great days are gone.

  • @Airbusman1 I agree with you....

  • Ah those were the days! I remember watching this & cheering my head off at the move. Also Zanardi became a fave & he cleaned up the next year.

  • Rossi copied his move in 2008 I think!

  • I cant see how that was legal. He had no intentions of making the turn.

  • @TommyChapman He didn't cut the track technically - was still on the runoff tarmac.

  • @TommyChapman The shortest distance is a straight line. The corksrew turn is not 2 90 degree turns, so why not go in straight?

  • Dboy02 is right... if that part of the track was considered still part of the track during that time ( even if it was outside the striped markers ) then the move was legal...otherwise he would have to give the position back to Herta...

  • at 1:06 didnt he cut the corner?

  • Anybody that has to comment this many times to prove something right isn't that sure himself! Or perhaps you are still trying to convince yourself?

  • Hehe, I think Alex Zanardi discussed this pass a bit with Valentino Rossi...

  • i get goosebumps everytime i watch this. Simply known as "The Pass". bryan hertas carrer sure went down hill after this

  • The bravery to pass where you shouldn't, the skill to save it where you shouldn't be!

  • BRAVO!!!

  • Comment removed

  • It's an insane manoeuvre at the Corkscrew. Alessandro passer his Laguna Seca rival.

  • Isnt that supposed to be a black flag.

  • no not really when het had hit him and he flow from the track then you can think about that

  • No - that was within the rules at the time. Just. His left side tires were on a piece of pavement that was, at the time, considered a part of the track.

  • great historic video of course, personally I think this pass is a little overrated as he kinda cheated but it is also a very interesting race as it captures the nature and essence of racing and what racing is about. In racing as in life you can cheat and get away with it.

BTW wtf IRL got to do with this. It is inappropriate to show a link to an EARL-site in this video

  • F1 - what? CART for life!

  • mamma mia alex!!!!!!

  • fuck would i be pissed if i was passed like this !!!!!

  • italians do it better

  • Your comment is a perfect example of your ignorance. Alessandro "Alex" Zanardi is Italian. He was born in Bologna, Italy.

    You fail.

  • are you serious?

do you really think that a person who was born and live in Milan don't know Zanardi? it's like i say that you don't know Obama....

oh..can you help me please? is Valentino Rossi italian? and Roberto Benigni?

Remember that U.S.A. is not the center of the world...

..ma sono tutti così ritardati negli Stati Uniti?

    what a loser...

  • Then you shouldn't post comments with such an asinine attitude that would cause others to misunderstand your point.

  • oh god...

    think before writing about...

do yourself a favor...go search what my first comment "with asinine attitude" mean really...and maybe you'll understand that i'm proud of zanardi.

    pity on you...

    peace.

  • Face it, you are thick.

  • Remember kids, it's only cheating if he ACTUALLY broke the rules. At the time, he didn't. He sure did push it, tho, but then again, it's an awesome pass at the same time.

Besides, Zanardi passed Herta ON the track and went off because he carried too much speed coming into the Corkscrew.

  • NO God dammit, it was not a great pass! He completely left the track! What's great about wanting to overtake someone and than come off the track?

  • Are you watching the same video as I am?

  • I don't know, but in the video I watch, I can clearly see a cheat at 1:06.

  • CART rules at the time said only two wheels have to the be on the track. His left wheels were on the pavement on the inside of the rumblestrips. At the time, THAT WAS PART OF THE TRACK. No cheating whatsoever. The end.

  • Back when racing was fun, now its just boring

Amazing that they are touting a female driver that wouldnt have even been a back up driver 15 years ago as a star, F-ing pathetic.

Rally racing is the last unspoiled racing all the others are for sissies.

  • Italy won Indycar!

  • wow , such a great block at 1:08+

  • Im weeping in disgust. This was wonderful Cart/Indycar when the cars were absolute monsters of power and looks. Now we have cars running all the same chassis that look about as sleek as a cheese block with half the power!

  • Seeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeewing and a miss, 0-1.

  • That's cheating! Are there no rules in the U S and fucked up A?

  • The rulebook at the time said only two wheels had to be on the track for a move to be legal. And yes, AT THE TIME THIS MANEUVER HAPPENED, that little paved section his left wheels are on WAS considered part of the track.

In short: It was not cheating.

  • I tried this in Gran Turismo and just crashed into the wall :(

  • Win at all costs.

  • lol cheater

  • The move was legal at the time. Deal with it.

  • Zanardi is Maradona!

  • incredible.

  • el tracktorista alex zanardi...!!

  • he should´ve been penalized

  • dirty but clean

  • that was good!!!

  • this guy's got balls!

  • He didn't get a advantage when he cut the corner, Herta got the advantage.

  • One of the many reasons why I love Open Wheel Racing

  • ha tagliato l'angolo! E anche se aveva già passato Herta non si può negare che lo abbia avvantaggiato nel mantenere la posizione!

  • That was cheating

  • It wasn't cheating, he didn't use the racing line and surprised the other driver by doing so.

  • Try actually watching the video, the part he drove over is part of the track and its there because this turn is the only part of the whole course where someone has any chance of passing and if someone chose to go deep in order to block another driver they would need to exit right at the spot and if there was dirt they they could cause a number of problems. Now quite failing at trolling this video, they've been turning corners the whole race.

Oh BTW, theirs no rule against this move, you failed.

  • MotoGP, Laguna Seca, 2008, Rossi vs Stoner.

    Cheating?

What the hell are you talking about!?

  • Yes there is. At least now. The pass was completed using the outside of the track. Despite being an awesome spectacle, it may have been legal back then, but it's really unsportsman like

  • Quit trolling the video already, I can't keep up with how much you fail with every post. Theirs only so many douchebags I can handle at one time. Bring me some evidence via a rule book that this was cheating or please just shut the fuck up and save us both some time please...

  • Nothing to creditable to say I see. Unsucessful, troll was unsuccessful.

  • Zanard made a good move but It was Hertas fault. It was the last lap. He should have taken a defensive line.

  • I believe I coined the phrase "Pull a Zanardi" years ago after that pass.

  • We emailed Bob Varsha at ABC or CART after that race, and heard him use the term "Pulled a Zanardi" at the beginning of the next weeks pre-race. We were laughing that he recognized our email. But am sure we weren't the only ones to comment on that move. Wow!

  • 1:05 Red car: "Coming through!"

  • he cut the corner how is that a great pass!!

  • The corner he cut wasn't the corner he pulled the pass on and it slowed him down when he did that, so he didn't gain an advantage to get penalized. It was impressive because the corkscrew is a corner no one would even think of attempting a pass in. That was gutsy.

  • At the time of the move that was not cutting the corner. That paved section past the kerbing was considered a portion of the track(but it was also very dirty and not the ideal racing line - Zanardi could not have possibly gained an advantage making that move - he got around because of Herta dodging him and losing momentum), and he had two wheels on it, which was all that was required at the time.

  • Matto duro...forza Alex!

  • This was so long ago but my favorite moment from American open wheel history. No wonder i'm a Zanadri fan till this day.

  • I cant beleive that was a legal pass! freaking astounding!

  • according to wikipedia, it was banned after this.

  • The move itself wasn't banned - CART/CCWS maintained the "two wheels on the track" rule until they shut down. But that piece of pavement was declared to not be part of the track after this move. (it has since then been removed)

  • o shit. wierd oO!

  • It looks to me that Herta was broken, but still an excellent move from Zanardi.

  • How is Herta broken?

  • Great Overtake!

  • It is said many people call it "The Pass".

  • Give a look at the Rossi pass on Stoner al Laguna's Gp 2008. It's a fantastic remake on two wheels... Mitico Zanna!

  • CART > F1

  • Comment removed

  • What a move, yes he went off the track and kept ahead, but he was offline after that. It's the racing equivalent of going into a revolving door behind someone and coming out ahead of them, they're bound to be annoyed. Was it fair? Maybe not. Was it brilliant? Yes it was. Was it racing? I think so. Was CART better for not penalising him, Yes. Look at the nonsense you get in F1 when the stewards get involved. CART forever.

  • the reason he got away with it was because that line is slower than the race line

  • But he slowed the other guy down at the top of the hill, prevented him turning in on the apex. Then at the bottom when he re-joined he took the inside for the next corner and made the other guy go round the outside.

  • he didn't cut the track

  • Looked like it to me.

  • The piece of pavement his left wheels were on was, at the time, considered part of the track. That was changed after this pass. CART rules(and those of most other road-racing series) only required two wheels to be on the legal racing surface for a move to be legal.

  • Zanardi cut the track. . In any series, you cannot improve your position by cutting the track.but for some reason CART didn't enforce the rule on their "golden boy" and he thanked them by skipping to F1 the next year.

  • Comment removed

  • if you look, it seems clear that Zanardi cut the track AFTER he passed Herta. look again from 1:03 to 1:10. then decide.

  • yeah I agree with you, but the rule said you can cut corners if you can not do something else and if you don't take an advantage of an other racer. and at the moment when he cut the corner he had already pass Herta, so it's not cheating. It's just because the corners are very close together.

  • He did not improve his position by cutting the track Einstein. He had the move made when he took th einside line and out-braked Herta at the entrance to the corner. For those who commented that he over ran his mark and slid - watch the video again. At no time does any of his tires stop turning. Zanardi was a master at out-braking opponents into corners. He did it on every road course they ran.

  • Ahh, back in the glory days of CART/Indy cars, with the turbo monsters making God knows how much power, back when it was a real race series, opposed to a sad soap opera where nothing matters except Danica's precious face time. No wonder everyone's moving to NASCAR.

  • If that had happened in f1 Zanardi would not have got away with that. That's for sure

  • I don't believe F1 would penalize someone for making on a pass on a legal section of track(yes, the paved section his left side wheels are on WAS a legal part of the track at the time). Although, with the stewarding decisions in recent years you never know.

  • that was an awesome fucking move, ive been on the laguna seca track before (toured not raced) and that camera angle does not do it justice the amount of elevation and blind turn of the corkscrew, zanardi had some serious balls to do that. Shame what happened to his legs in 01..but hes still one hell of a guy.

  • what an awesome pass. ppl dont do it anymore coz they are scared of being penalised. they need to not be so damn strict all the time!

  • fact, that was part of the laguna seca track and therefore legal until the following year when they made that move illegal in the track rules. learn something about CART and Laguna Seca before shooting your uneducated mouth off.

  • fact, its all in the name. uncivility rules.

  • fact. you're a moron that needs to learn about racing before opining about it.

  • Balls.

  • Was an awesome pass down the corkscrew, though it feels as if it has been a penalty.

Even if they intro. the rule later.

  • This is impossible on Formula One without a 25 seconds penalty.

  • and thats why i hate the fia.

  • Actually, i mean it was a unfair pass by Zanardi. Of course it was a awesome move, but he cut off the Corkscrew.

  • No, he didn't. At the time, that piece of pavement his left wheels were on was part of the track. That was changed the following year because of backlash from other drivers(primarily Herta) over this pass.

  • It´s great! One of the best passes ever.

  • valentino rossi chissà quante volte lo ha visto 'sto sorpasso!!!

  • Como se estraña esas epocas. La indy esta muy lejos de llegar a ese nivel.

    Viva Zanardi!!

  • Grande Alex!!!

  • Should have been black flagged, both for cutting the track and the block afterwards. Worst sportsmanship ever.

  • The rules that made this manoeuvre illegal were only introduced after this pass. Therefore I can't agree that he should have been black flagged.

The best drivers know the rules and race to the limit of them. That is, and always will be, a part of motor racing.

  • Had Bryan Herta been driving a Ferrari, the stewards would have goven Zanardi a 25 second penalty ... ...

  • True True. FIA= Ferrari International Assistance

  • Block?! Are you blind? I admit going across the track was a little borderline, but there was no block. And his sportsmanship cant be worse that Schumachers.

  • Blocking? Thats the RACE LINE through turn 9 and he gave Herta plenty of room, a block is when you move OUT of the racing line to prevent someone from passing.
