Let me clairfy how all this works, as my degree is int he music business.
No matter where you purchase this album, the label get's money for it. They deserve some since they paid to make the album and market it. Al and his people probably get about 15%, that's pretty typical. He makes most of his money touring, and from merch, but there are typically a lot of fees in both of those worlds.
It's ok that you guys are confused, i'm starting a website to clear up how these things work.
Actually Volcano is a small record label, which a lot of artists are doing in order to avoid the corrupt contracts, like Weezer, or working independent of record companies, like Switchfoot. These small record labels are typically owned by current or former musicians who know what crappy contracts are like and only give out good contracts. So yes, Weird Al gets a lot of the money. But either way he has had a super successful career and probably doesn't care a lot about the money.
@infowarrior2112 Actually, most of a band's revenue these days comes from concerts. So the very best way to support them is make it out to those. But buying their albums still supports them. If it didn't, they wouldn't work with record companies.
I really don't think buying albums helps the bands. If you go to best buy and buy this albums do you think that the corrupt record companies are going to pay him, or pay him a good amount? NO!
If you want to give bands money, buy directly from their websites.
@Infowarrior2112 You do realize that artists voluntarily sign the contracts record companies offer them? Record companies aren't some evil shadow organizations. They do all the promotion and advertising and actually make the CDs. Artists aren't forced into signing their deals. They sign because they like the deal they've been offered.
@Infowarrior2112 actually, artest make almost all of their money from ad's so even if no one buys stuff, as long as the video is popular they will make money.
@Infowarrior2112 who the hell do you thing sets up their websites and uploads the mp3s? Idiot they can't legally sell their music and get 100% of the earnings when they are tied to a contract with a record company. Thats the fuckin point of a record label, to give killer publicity in exchange for a portion of the earnings!!!
@Infowarrior2112 Your dumb. First off, this is an artist who has been around for a long time. So I'm sure hes doing just fine. Second record companies work off signing bonuses based on how good you are at what you do and a percentage of profits based on your contract. Without a label to back most starting bands , they could never develop the PR the would need to make any money. why dont you check your facts before blurting your stupidity into the public.
@Infowarrior2112 Hahahah, who do you think runs the band's website? If they are signed to a label, the label handles everything, they don't just make their own website unless they are unsigned.
Yeah , Weird Al will do STYLE parodies , But Skipper Dan in a 100 % his !!!! Just like this one !!! Honestly , if you don;t buy the albums , then why make comments !?!?!?!
@devilduck5150 Actually, all of his originals are style parodies. Skipper Dan is in the style of They Might be Giants, and this song is in the style of Hanson. Taylor Hanson even plays the piano on this track.
@ChristianMusician85 Actually, Skipper Dan is an (uncomfirmed) parody of Wheezer. They Might be Giants were parodied for "Everything You Know is Wrong" and parts of "Genius in France".
@kenzydollluvsgaga yeah. this song is Hanson, CNR does the style of White Stripes, Skipper Dan does Weezer, Craigslist does The Doors, Ringtone does Queen, and Stop Forwarding... does Jim Steinman.
@nowhereman136 - They have actually have released a lot of Albums but they just aren't mainstream. I believe that they performed a song from their latest album on Jimmy Kimmel in like January.
why does this sound like its in a different key?

You get the feeling that every time Al writes a "love song", his wife feels compelled to say "this isn't about me, is it?"

For all that are unfamiliar with Weird Al's albums, usually half his songs are parodies and the other half are his originals.
