  • beautiful beautiful voice Jodi. U gave Ariel the most beautiful Disney princess voice...

  • sniff sniff....so beautiful.........sniff sniff

  • she looks a little bit like Bitty Schram (from MONK)

  • I always find it fascinating to watch talented people surrender to the creative process. Not knowing that they are actually creating history at the same time. What a gem of a moment.

  • They recorded this on my birthday :) August 16 not the year though ._. maybe this is why I love Ariel so much! :D

  • jodi captures the emotions so perfectly

  • thats a fuckin genius right there

  • 2 people aren't part of our world.

  • Isso foi incrível muito bonito, perfeitoooooooooooooooooo

  • Ursula must have disliked this.=))

  • I love seeing the people who give life to the characters of my childhood. It makes me want to thank them for making not just me, but hundreds and thousands of other kids all over the world, happy, even twenty years later.

  • she seems to be getting slightly annoyed :/

  • SERIOUSLY I SEE ARIEL WHEN SHE TALKS! Favorite Disney movie

  • Man, what a visionary Howard was with his songs!

  • Howard seems to be a really nice guy RIP Howard Ashman RIP .

  • 0:03 was that Howard Ashman. If Alan Menken dies I would be lost with words. There will no other film composer that would make me cry and would make me sing the same songs over and over again.

  • it must feel good to sound like a princess :)

  • ...His voice sounds exactly as I imagined it would!

  • I wish I could've worked with him :/

  • 2 people got kicked out of your world.

  • when i listen to this song i think about how it would be to live my dreams of being an actress :)

  • вот это голос......потрясающе...

  • wow! I just admire her... I love her voice, she makes Ariel so perfect! ♥

  • its weird hearing her talk haha

  • so amazing!!!!

  • This is really touching to watch... Its one thing that neither Jodi nor Alan know yet that he has been diagnosed with HIV, yet. Its another that I know what Menken is talking about when he says on the Aladdin DVD that he can still remember Ashman going "no I don't want this, I want this." You can see how much he loved music and how much these people loved him. The outcome of his life is heartbreaking. RIP Ashman, who gave a mermaid her voice and a beast his soul.

  • @102936 That last line literally gave me the chills...even though I've heard that before.

  • Jodi really had that hair.....She sounds like she's 16 and not 27 years old at all back then!

  • What will disney be when alan menken dies?

  • Jodi is just amazing. What an iconic voice.

    RIP Howard Ashman. <3

  • Why can't Disney make anything like this anymore?... or Aladdin, or Beauty and the Beast, or The Lion King?? Alan Menken helped with this and all those listed, he could probably come up with something.

  • wow, he's so nice and easy to work with!

  • This is amazing! Jodi is perfect and hearing Howard's comments is just fantastic, he really gave the little mermaid her voice :)

  • She's always gonna be the original little mermaid (:

  • RIP Howard Ashman.. Jodi Benson's coach;((

  • She is a beautiful genius.

  • Just the way she talks normally is Ariel :D

  • I just love that little giggle she does at 1:42... <3

  • August 16, 1989 - That's my day of birth! :D

  • awww memories:)

  • the world aches to know what was said 5:14 - 5:25

  • I remember hearing that it was so dark in the sound booth because she couldn't get into character; in the dark she had the feeling of being under water

  • Chills & Tears.(': <3

  • wow this made me cry from Howard Ashman just being a part of it.

  • christopher daniel barns was 16 when he voice eric he going to be 40 next year

  • Funny that she mentions the Lunt Fontanne theatre when that's the theatre little mermaid played at on broadway!

  • she looks a little annoyed but hell that was amazing!

  • She sounds amazing, but you can tell. This wasn't the final take, and shouldn't have been the final take. Alan and Howard knew what they wanted, and somehow they were able to convey that to the performers. It's SO awesome!

  • Her laugh -3

  • How old was she when she was cast as Ariel?

  • @eatingupthelight she was 28(:

  • @eatingupthelight 20 something

  • lol I love how nowadays when singers record songs they sing each little part over and over until they get if perfect and then add pitch correction but she sings the whole song without stopping because she's just that good. :D

  • R.I.P. Howard Ashman

  • i was born a year later :)

  • this is 1989? wow, doesnt feel like it

  • Her voice is perfect! She doesn't need auto-tune or heavy voice editing (or any editing at all!). She's so talented.

And Howard Ashman was an amazing writer!

  • evertime she talks i imagine ariel <3

  • "no matter how quiet you whisper we're still getting every word" XD i love the end convo

  • im such a huge Ariel/Jodi benson fan this is amazing to see thanks so much for ulpoading this!!!!!

  • It;s kinda funny hearing "Ariel" talk! This is pure magic though!!!

  • thats cool some one found the original recording you would think this would be locked in some vault some where

  • wow... priceless.. imaging being in that moment...how fantastic would that be?

I just can describe how fabulous is to lisen... to look and to feel it :D..thank very much for the upload :D :D :D <3

  • Howard Ashman = Legend.

  • I have one question. This was recorded in August 89 and the film came in cinema in November 89. How is this possible. Doesnt they usually first record voices and then draw the film? Its not possible that they recorded "Part Or Your World" in August and film was finished in TWO months!

  • @wannabex01 I heard somewhere that they had to rush the movie (I think it was on the dvd) so it would be finished really quickly. But yeah, not sure about 2 months either! :)

  • She was getting so frustrated. I will go to my grave loving Disney

  • She has such an amazing voice they really had to work hard to take it down, I listened to this and then to the final version and holy hell did they mellow it out, and holy hell was it ever effective. It's funny how sometimes less is so much more.

  • I love this! Funny thing-she mentioned the Lunt-Fontanne theater...which is where the actual musical ran its shows. Haha xD thanks for the upload, I love singing this and hearing Howard coach Jodi is really cool.

  • I still think The Little Mermaid was one of the best Disney movies ever made.

  • @anjabest2230 Yeah mine too its my all time favourite film while Tangled is in at no 2 but its no 1 for best film of the decade.

  • @appleguy: adendum...i should've said the movie's MUSIC director & lead composer.

  • Beatiful voice... =' )

  • who the hell disliked this?!

  • OH MY GOD this video is a jewel...thank god you uploaded it. Thank you so much...god bless Howard!

  • This is the first time I'v ever heard Howard Ashman's voice. I like it.

  • @red09323 Buy "Music Behind the Magic". Your brain will explode!

  • She still is the best <3

  • it's all those tiny adjustments that make Ariel the character she is.

  • i would love to have a dad like him :)

  • the little mermaid has the most striking voices in all disney movies especially Ariel. My fave of all

  • This is so enjoyable to watch the making of this wonderful song! Thank you to everyone who was involved in making this:)

  • Gave me massive goose pimples!

  • Its fantastic see the beginning of this song.

  • even the way she talks is cute :))

  • @drkpassionplay: why? it's no different than jim henson--now steve whitmire--showing us how kermit is performed; the magic is in your heart & inner child, not necessarily in the images themselves, since it was live people who brought those images to life.

  • i am so naming my daughter ariel. but its gonna be spelled arielle (:

  • her voic got deeper now...but its kk, i still love her C:

  • Why is that guy whisperin?

  • @appleguy1804: the sound tech guy & the movie's director are present at recordings to see if the artist gets the sound just right.

  • When she starts saying "Not as breathy, but..." I'm like...Ariel? Is Ariel talking? It's so weird!

  • hup where they walk... hup where they run

  • Oh my god it's Ariel!!

Little Mermaid is my favourite of the Renaissance era.

  • @Gurizin hahah DAMN it's not THAT old.

  • I always thought of Alan Menken as the real genius behind the level of emotion and "magic" invoked in these movies, but as I watched the documentaries, I learned that- though Menken was and IS amazing- Howard was the true genius. He brought the best out of everyone- the actresses/actors, Menken, the storyboard artists. He knew exactly what to say to make their talents really shine. Knowing that makes his passing even more bittersweet.

  • does she aslo do the voiced for belle in beauty and the beast?

  • @sims2fan14 No, Paige O'Hara plays Belle in Beauty and the Beast.

I believe Jodi Benson HAS done the voice of Belle in a few of the sequels, but not of the Belle in Beauty and The Beast

  • It's always a pleasure seeing her perform her signature song. Thanks for the upload:)

  • @DisneyClassicsFan My pleasure! I'm so happy so many people have found this as enjoyable and fascinating as I do.

  • Jodi's voice is very beautiful, I think it is one of the most beautiful voices OF ALL TIME, along with Lea Salonga's. They're blesses with those gifts. :)

  • I saw her perform this live at the 2011 D23 Expo (along with a few other Disney princesses) and it was one of the best moments of my life. Disney come to life in front of me

  • wow. THe direction he gave and how she incorporated it into her singing is amazing!

  • they lowered it for the movie?

  • I love Jodi Benson she gave me one of my childhood heros :') R.I.P. Howard Ashman YOU helped make my childhood

  • Howard Ashman .... R.I.P.

  • when she speaks I can only think of ariel :>

  • R.I.P

    Howard Ashman

  • Ariel has my favorite singing voice out of all the Disney princesses. =)

  • OH MY GOD. She still sounds pretty much the same to this day! She's AMAZING

  • Ursula was on to something. I'd like to steal her voice too!

  • Comment removed

  • Now now... What's all the whispering about?? :P

  • Jodi Benson has one of the down-right most incredible, beautiful, real, and amazing voices I've ever heard. God Bless her <3

  • I'm glad that Christ had his eyes on her and was the sole force behind selecting her to represent the voice of a cartoon mermaid... (see her other interview on here. EEEEK!)

  • MAGIC pure beautiful disney Magic

  • Howard was truly a great coach to the voice actors especially with their singing. Here Howard decides to make the room darker and seem smaller. Since Ariel is supposed to be in a small and dim place when she sings this, he believes that Jodi has to feel like she's in the same kind of place and it helps a great deal. Even voice actors need a way to get into character. Howard Ashman, what a genius he was!

  • When I look at this stuff, I sometimes wonder if Howard Ashman would've been a good judge for American Idol, he apparently knew A LOT about singing and music. But if he had been, I'm not sure if he and Simon would've gotten along because Simon Cowell HATES musicals or so I've heard.

  • Funny how she mentions not to sing it like she's standing on the stage of the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, and yet the Broadway production wound up having it's New York run there. Thanks for posting! What a rare and special treasure this is to see Howard at work! He is sorely missed. Cheers!

  • Listen to that accent! That's not in the movie version... who knew?

  • even when she talks i melt!

  • "doesn't matter how quiet you whisper we got it all here bro" lool

  • it's funny how to hear "ariel" talk normally haha :P

  • @xic4loca ikr its like ariel actually casually talking XD

  • they made this when my grandparents were small. and im 15! just imagine how many years!

  • @yelome04

This was recorded 21 years ago! How on earth could your grandparents have been smal then? Even your parents were probably in their late teens or early twenties! :-)

  • where did you get this footage from?

  • @RARSOUNDTRACK "Waking Sleeping Beauty" DVD Special Feature :-) It's an excellent documentary about the second Golden Age of Disney Animation in the late '80's, early '90's.

  • @bubblegumpopprdcnts - well you kind of have to understand that while Jodi was in a studio, Sierra is on broadway. jodi could sing quietly and the mic woukd still pick it up perfectly and you would hear it perfectly in the movie. To me it seems that Sierra doesnt have much of a choice since her voice needs to reach even the people in the back row

  • Such a joy to witness this, thanks youtube.

  • other than some mispronounced syllables (i believe it's because she was testing out ways to manipulate her voice), she sounds exactly like her finished recording! amazing.

  • "and to our friend, Howard Ashman, who gave a mermaid her voice and a beast his soul we will be forever grateful."

  • Are you sure Howard Ashman was a lyricist/writer/producer of The Little Mermaid? Because here he looks more like a director!!!!

  • @71crm He also produced all the recording sessions for the film, along with Alan Menken.

  • This is absolutely enchanting to watch! So thrilling!!

  • howard ashman is a genius i like how u can tell the song isnt perfectly sung yet

  • The big difference with the musical version is that Jodi Benson uses mix voice in the high notes while Sierra Boggess belts them out.

I can't decide what I prefer! I love Sierra's amazing belting voice but this version is so very sweet!

  • @JeanVe I'm sticking with the original i think :) xx

  • Howard Ashman is and always will be the best lyricist I have ever known. This man gave a mermaid her voice and a beast his soul. I wish he were still alive. The man was a music genius.

    Long live Howard Ashman.

  • A voice of a true mermaid........WE LOVE YOU JODI !!!!!! =D And Howard Ashman, no one will ever forget you....you brought our Disney mermaid to life with Jodi =D <3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3 you will forever be remembered

  • I love how he KNOWS exactly what he wants in every single part of the song

And how even if an old video, his presence is so overwhelming!!!

  • Ah, Jodi Benson... the face of true talent :)

  • What brilliance....his coaching is so detailed, insightful and yet gentle. Wish I could've met him. And Jodi is gorgeous.

  • Jodi Benson, Howard Ashman and Alan Menken...three absolute genius!!

  • "she has the Ariel laugh DOWN! -- oh wait, she IS Ariel...." that's what I keep thinking to myself the whole video :-P (...and ever since I i was a little girl to find out jodi was the voice :))

  • this is amazing! thanks for uploading it :)

  • haha nice

  • Thank you Reddit.

  • I love her laugh at 1:41 :)

    She's amazing!!

  • He made it like a stage musical.

  • I cried watching this i wish i could be at her level one day doing voice and singing for movies... she is the reason why i started singing in the first place

  • @FutureBelle I cried too! She is absolutely wonderful. I love that she is in her own world when she is singing :)

  • I love how she says "Instead of standing in the Lunt Fontanne theatre" which is obviously the theatre the broadway production of the little mermaid was :L

  • @Jameess06 I LOVE that too!

  • Jodi Benson has a voice NOBODY can resist.

  • According to the documentary, "Waking Sleeping Beauty", the date this footage was recorded was August 9th, 1988, which makes more sense.

  • Oh I love this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Howard Ashman was a genius!! He understood so well how this song would be best delivered. May he rest in peace! <3

  • @LilCo4All Amen.

  • @LilCo4All He died? :'(

  • @fabs020404 Yes. :( Back in March of 1991, while working on Beauty & the Beast. He didn't get to see the final edit of that movie!

  • @LilCo4All Aw, that's so sad :'( I didn't know that, thanks for the info.

  • wow I was like 2 years old when Jodi did this.

  • wowwwwwwwwwwwwwwww Thank You soooooooooo much!
