I always find it fascinating to watch talented people surrender to the creative process. Not knowing that they are actually creating history at the same time. What a gem of a moment.
I love seeing the people who give life to the characters of my childhood. It makes me want to thank them for making not just me, but hundreds and thousands of other kids all over the world, happy, even twenty years later.
0:03 was that Howard Ashman. If Alan Menken dies I would be lost with words. There will no other film composer that would make me cry and would make me sing the same songs over and over again.
This is really touching to watch... Its one thing that neither Jodi nor Alan know yet that he has been diagnosed with HIV, yet. Its another that I know what Menken is talking about when he says on the Aladdin DVD that he can still remember Ashman going "no I don't want this, I want this." You can see how much he loved music and how much these people loved him. The outcome of his life is heartbreaking. RIP Ashman, who gave a mermaid her voice and a beast his soul.
Why can't Disney make anything like this anymore?... or Aladdin, or Beauty and the Beast, or The Lion King?? Alan Menken helped with this and all those listed, he could probably come up with something.
I remember hearing that it was so dark in the sound booth because she couldn't get into character; in the dark she had the feeling of being under water
She sounds amazing, but you can tell. This wasn't the final take, and shouldn't have been the final take. Alan and Howard knew what they wanted, and somehow they were able to convey that to the performers. It's SO awesome!
lol I love how nowadays when singers record songs they sing each little part over and over until they get if perfect and then add pitch correction but she sings the whole song without stopping because she's just that good. :D
I have one question. This was recorded in August 89 and the film came in cinema in November 89. How is this possible. Doesnt they usually first record voices and then draw the film? Its not possible that they recorded "Part Or Your World" in August and film was finished in TWO months!
@wannabex01 I heard somewhere that they had to rush the movie (I think it was on the dvd) so it would be finished really quickly. But yeah, not sure about 2 months either! :)
She has such an amazing voice they really had to work hard to take it down, I listened to this and then to the final version and holy hell did they mellow it out, and holy hell was it ever effective. It's funny how sometimes less is so much more.
I love this! Funny thing-she mentioned the Lunt-Fontanne theater...which is where the actual musical ran its shows. Haha xD thanks for the upload, I love singing this and hearing Howard coach Jodi is really cool.
@drkpassionplay: why? it's no different than jim henson--now steve whitmire--showing us how kermit is performed; the magic is in your heart & inner child, not necessarily in the images themselves, since it was live people who brought those images to life.
I always thought of Alan Menken as the real genius behind the level of emotion and "magic" invoked in these movies, but as I watched the documentaries, I learned that- though Menken was and IS amazing- Howard was the true genius. He brought the best out of everyone- the actresses/actors, Menken, the storyboard artists. He knew exactly what to say to make their talents really shine. Knowing that makes his passing even more bittersweet.
Jodi's voice is very beautiful, I think it is one of the most beautiful voices OF ALL TIME, along with Lea Salonga's. They're blesses with those gifts. :)
I saw her perform this live at the 2011 D23 Expo (along with a few other Disney princesses) and it was one of the best moments of my life. Disney come to life in front of me
I'm glad that Christ had his eyes on her and was the sole force behind selecting her to represent the voice of a cartoon mermaid... (see her other interview on here. EEEEK!)
Howard was truly a great coach to the voice actors especially with their singing. Here Howard decides to make the room darker and seem smaller. Since Ariel is supposed to be in a small and dim place when she sings this, he believes that Jodi has to feel like she's in the same kind of place and it helps a great deal. Even voice actors need a way to get into character. Howard Ashman, what a genius he was!
When I look at this stuff, I sometimes wonder if Howard Ashman would've been a good judge for American Idol, he apparently knew A LOT about singing and music. But if he had been, I'm not sure if he and Simon would've gotten along because Simon Cowell HATES musicals or so I've heard.
Funny how she mentions not to sing it like she's standing on the stage of the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, and yet the Broadway production wound up having it's New York run there. Thanks for posting! What a rare and special treasure this is to see Howard at work! He is sorely missed. Cheers!
This was recorded 21 years ago! How on earth could your grandparents have been smal then? Even your parents were probably in their late teens or early twenties! :-)
@RARSOUNDTRACK "Waking Sleeping Beauty" DVD Special Feature :-) It's an excellent documentary about the second Golden Age of Disney Animation in the late '80's, early '90's.
@bubblegumpopprdcnts - well you kind of have to understand that while Jodi was in a studio, Sierra is on broadway. jodi could sing quietly and the mic woukd still pick it up perfectly and you would hear it perfectly in the movie. To me it seems that Sierra doesnt have much of a choice since her voice needs to reach even the people in the back row
other than some mispronounced syllables (i believe it's because she was testing out ways to manipulate her voice), she sounds exactly like her finished recording! amazing.
Howard Ashman is and always will be the best lyricist I have ever known. This man gave a mermaid her voice and a beast his soul. I wish he were still alive. The man was a music genius.
