This is all in line with standard parliamentary procedure. Even though the 'yea' votes were louder than the 'nay' votes, the nays may still have come from a majority. Also, being "awesome in math" has little to do with this very standard legislative practice. The counting of "200 votes in 5 seconds" happens during most every legislative session.
