The actual meaning of stalker comes from 'Stalking' the exclusion zone, essentially, people pay "stalkers" to be tour guides inside the exclusion zone... wikipedia(dot)org/wiki/Chernob­yl_stalking most likely gsc used this and made it into an acronym to serve their purposes, cool since they fit everything that the stalker characters are in the games ;P

That's why Strelok was a 'bolt that felt out of the machine.' A 'mistake was made', and his mission was to kill himself, thus lending the game a as-yet-unseen plot device that, if you didn't piece it together before then, can scare the crap out of you. Strelok was brainwashed with a simple mission: Find Strelok. Kill Strelok. This plot device also serves to push the player forward throughout the game, trying to find Strelok by hunting down his comrades and hiding places.

cconciousness was trying to make a better world but it went wrong it made the zone instead they were trying to stop people from finding out what they had done so the brainwashed them(brainscorcher)whenever they got to close and sent them on a mission specificly for them. all the people who got to close got missions to kill eachother(which they did) but streloks mission was to kill himself(but he had amnesia and he was the last remaining STALKER that had got to close) well at least wat i think :3

For those who didn't get it.

You are Strelok, and apparently you and your friends were getting to be a liability to your leaders, the CConsciousness. So, they set up a mission to have you killed. Unfortunately, due to some sort of a clerical error, you are one of the ones assigned to do it. You either aren't told who you were going to kill, or for some reason you forgot.

The clerical error was because of the picture you see in the PDA, under the kill Strelok mission. The Picture is supposed to be Strelok, but it's actually a picture of Ghost. C-Conciousness thought that Ghost was Strelok, and that Strelok was Ghost, and accidentally had Strelok try to kill Strelok.

Strelok and his party where stalkers that almost got to the wishgranter (as seen in a cutscene), found out too much secrets and escaped again.

C-consciousness had to make sure Strelok, Ghost and Fang where killed and so they captured a random Stalker, erased his memory and gave him the order to kill Strelok.

This random stalker was strelok and so he was set out to kill himself.
