Well, this Yeletsky and the Rodrigo just wiped everyone off the stage in Cardiff 1989. Don't think I have ever witnessed another competition performance like that. Very few of the overall winners of Cardiff have actually lived up to the promise, Karita Mattila certainly has, and I would like to think there is a niche for Dmitri, as well...
Now his voice is much fuller, deeper, technically equipped with pinpoint frasing and incomparable breathcontrol. Just compare his old and new recordings(romances, arias(Verdi espessially, but not just ), and it'll be obvious to you that the newer is mush superior.
Take his artistic growth and superb vocal technique. lyrical is not better than Verdian- just a different janre.
Now this is a gorgeous baritone'in top of his form, able to sing as dramatic as lyric roles perfectly.
Now his voice is much fuller, deeper, technically equipped with pinpoint frasing and incomparable breathcontrol.
He's not better younger--you like him younger( a big difference, isn't it?).Now his voice is mush impressive. Just compare his old and new recordings(romances, arias(Verdi espessially, but not just ), and it'll be obvious to you that the newer is mush superior.
Not counting his artistic growth and superb vocal technique,
you are basically mean that lyrical is better than Verdian.
This may be right for you, but this is very subjective-like I prefer baritones to tenors, but , please, don't generalize.
Now this is a gorgeous baritone'in top of his form, able to sing as dramatic as lyric roles perfectly( see his new records- for example, arias and duets wiht R.Fleming in S.-Petersburg and Pushkin' romances).
This opinion is not just mine, but of many of mine ''virtual" friends, a professional musicians.
Huh?? What are all these "he can't sing anymore" comments? Guess what? It's been 20 years since this performance. His hair is white now? Notice that? The man still sings beautifully...voices change as they age with time. Move along WITH him and stop living in the past.
This moved me to tears. What a shame this magnificent artist decided to push his small and beautiful voice into too big repertoire, which has robbed it of all beauty and freedom!
I am finally hearing this after learning it was - (*shh*) Lee Oswald's FAVORITE Russian Opera. Too bad he didn't express this to Marina a tenth as nicely as this.......
and to think, this year, 1989, Cardiff Singer of the World has both Hvorostovsky AND Bryn Terfel!

Spelled the title completely wrong, but still, good video.
"Ya vas Lublu" (supposed to be Ya lublu vas)

Magnificent singing. I understand his voice isn't one of the biggest, but with this amount of polish and precision, who cares?
I would be a bit worried about all those wide open E flats, but it seems to work for him.
Some wonderful playing there from the orchestra too. Bravo all round.

@yourehavingalarf Indeed his voice isn't the biggest, but he projects it better than most singers could. Absolutely amazing.

i like to imagine Bruce Dickenson and Dave Murray listening to this while writing their own songs. that makes me happy.

If anything, I think he sounds better in the 2003 recording. No matter what the age, if he sings this to me, I'm his!
