  • I was in Berlin with a school trip the week the pregnant women swam the river. they crossed right next to the Reichstag. What the documentary doesn't report is the failed attempt made the same week: a motorbike tried to run c/p Charlie but was stopped by the concrete/dynamite emergency barrier. Boom! It shoots across at 100km/h...

  • the escape from these 3 brothers was absolute awesome!

  • That plane rescue is so awesome

  • @0:23 The borderguards didn't open fire because they were afraid of hitting civilians on the western bank (Not shooting at western territory was only a theoretical rule that would be covered up by the Stasi in case it happened).

The East German borderguards were instructed not to use their firearms if the 'trespasser' was seen by people (civilians, West Berlin Police) from the western side of the border.

  • Schwimmunterricht lohnt sich !

  • @chopper0 They weren't the only one who did this...a whole family escaped with a baloon...not to mention a couple of other crazy escapes...with the train, with a hijacked plane....

  • ES LEBE DIE FREIHEIT!!!!

  • @UweSchenker Vielleicht wird sie das irgendwann mal.

  • @Davidshootingstar Karl Marx and his fucked up idiotic doctrine is long dead. Karl Marx's ghost can come and suck my enormous cock.

  • @Davidshootingstar You sir are an idiot, You are just too stupid to discuss anything with but nevertheless I will state it one more time. Every communist state has been a totalitarian terror state. That IS communism, that IS the end result of a ideology that thinks it can criminalize ownership of property. If one doesn't or is not allowed to own the fruits of ones labors then one is a slave. It really is that simple. "Comon" ownership never works, it leads to poverty and dictatorship. Good day

  • Thanks !!! LETS NEVER FORGET

  • @Davidshootingstar You post makes little sense. I don't know if it is a language issue or an inability to reason on your part. One statement that is clear is that you suggest that "communism destroy government power". This is the most stupid thing that I have ever read since I've been on the web. You have to be a complete and utter mentally deficient moron to think such a thing. You have to be blind to the reality of every communist state that ever existed. U r so stupid you are not worth it

  • @Davidshootingstar You can quibble all you want, but it is the same thing. Your "governmental authority" and nonconvertible money" are just meaningless statements that only a non thinking individual repeats. National socialism was in Germany, NAZIism, and it was government control of the production and distribution of all wealth, which is communism. What they called it and the specifics how their bureaucracy operated are not important, the end result was the same.

  • @Davidshootingstar socialism is communism you fool.

  • ahh, once again, the attempt to ridicule when you lose. Anyone reading your post can see that you say that life in communism was so bad and life in freedom is no better then you prattle off a list of childish grievances. And it is clear to anyone who reads your post that you have to be a giant hypocrite when it comes to those grievances. You can try to laugh it off but you cannot deny the truth. Happy suicides sunshine. I say you should jump in front of a train. This world aint god enough 4 u eh

  • @Indygoguy Hey, wise-guy! You just let look yourself foolish and that in your age of 46 years or such! You watched to much CNN and Hollywood shit, you inhaled to much chemtrails and took to much drugs. And sorry that I will not kill myself, I have family and responsibility. I know you don´t have such things and you are alone that you need to spam youtube with your senseless trash. At least your naive opinion about capitalism I will never forget! Too funny!

  • NSB were the nazi puppets of Netherlands. Attention-seekers, pity-seekers and traitors to our country. Sympathizers of the gas chambers.

No party in the world is more false than nazi scumbags to complain the DDR.

  • Only the dimmest and stupidest people could have been border guards. They spent their days keeping people IN. They were ordered to shoot people LEAVING. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that the wall was not built to prevent an invasion but to prevent an exodus. What threat does a person leaving present to the "state"?Workers work for those that pay them the most, SLAVES work because they can not escape. It was not a "workers" state, it was a "slave" state.

  • I lived in communism, it was shit.

I live now in capitalism. It is not better either.

We need a new system that isn´t based on lies, wars, oil, might, control and surveillance and slavery. But that is just my dream that will never come true.

The GDR was just a prison. Now Germany is just a sector where you have no more rights. True terrorists sit in the banks and governments. Always.

  • @ToniGermania Well Udo Voight is right that the regime will fall as the East's regime fell. I'll rephrase that slightly. It will change - even if the borders, flag, and technical 'State' remained. Tradition. Liberty. Tribalism.

  • @ToniGermania The system is not based on any of those things. Capitalism is based on freedom. There is no slavery in a free country. You sound like a spoiled brat who is unhappy that you need to provide for yourself. You probably think it is unfair that you need to work and consider it slavery. You are just a miserable hateful person that would be unhappy anywhere. Too bad for you.

  • @Indygoguy LMAO

  • @ToniGermania oh, I see, the typical liberal commie response when they know they have just lost an argument, laugh as if to ridicule. The truth is the truth though. You really do sound like a miserable hateful person. Hate often turns inward and you will probably end up killing yourself. The good old days when you could be a border guard and kill others are gone, thoughts of suicide will become more frequent for you and then you will put an end to your miserable existence.ur hatred guarantees it

  • @Indygoguy You are just a naive old man that lives in his own little world, therefor I did not want to destroy your childish views, lastly I am not a hateful person. Keep watching your stupid Hollywood Movies, believe in your Obama you voted for, try to spare youtube with your inept statements and do not be in worry about me! I am happy and content. I do not take you seriously so I can not discuss with you! Yet I will never forget your funny but stupid opinion about capitalism!!! xD

  • @ToniGermania Oh, I see, you lose the argument so you do the other old commie trick, defame and name call. Sounds hateful to me. By the way, seeing as how you think oil is bad, do you refuse to own a car? Do you refuse to own anything, like say, a computer, that is made with plastic? Do you refuse to heat your house with it? Do you refuse to buy food that is transported with it? War is bad? So when someone attacks you do you refuse to fight? You are truly a miserable, hate filled hypocrite.

  • @ToniGermania You also sound like anything but happy and content. Your rant sounded more like the moaning and groaning of someone who hates everyone and everything. You say that in either the communist state or the capitalist state life sucks. Yeah, you sound like a real ray of sunshine. I'm gonna call you sunshine from now on. Hows it going sunshine, been thinking of killing yourself lately? Of course you have, because it's all hopeless isn't it sunshine. Freedom? Yeah, that is just a sham huh?

  • @Indygoguy LOL! You should take a psychological treatment. Ask your doc for it.

  • @ToniGermania Well you know, there are always those who enjoyed doing nothing but being "taken care" of no matter how badly that was. There always will be those males who never have known, nor will ever know, what being a man, independent and self reliant , is. The thought of such things scares them. They don't think they have it in them. they are cowards and they will try to find faults with freedom because it scares them, it shows them how pathetic they are in the face of freedom.

  • Congrats morons! Now eat shit and dream of KapUtalismus... :))

  • i´ve heard about the "bow and arrow" case before and i´ve read an artikel in a german magazine in june 1989 about the escape in light-planes. it said that 2 brothers, who made an escape a few years before, picked up their younger brother at treptower park and then took him to westberlin. it said that they landed at reichstag. so ithink this isn´t that much fishy or so. but i agree that there weren´t too many storys about them later in the media. mybe they refused to talk about it ; )

  • To those who doubted the 'socialist' system of the DDR. Did you live there? Did you know what it was like? It was a totalitarian regime, terrorising its people. Just ask all the people who lost a loved one.

And to think the only thing need to topple the regime, was to allow its citizens the right to travel abroad.

It is just a shame that not enough high ranking East German officials were not put on trial for their atrocities committed.

  • @MagnusRex

  • @MagnusRex yea, i agree.

  • Actually I think its nazi propaganda.

I 'm as critic about the GDR as your average guy with a brain, but this stuff is

stupid fantasy crap to screw with your heads....

Next thing you know is the GDR communists were all satanic child molesters...

  • mh..something about that docu is fishy...

most of the people beeing interviewed are never shown in any of the COUNTLESS

documentarys on east germany that are shown at the moment. the story with the

bow and arrow??? I never heard of that! they would have been stars....I think the film makers are a bit to creative here....

please correct me if i'm wrong....and please present some serious sources..

really ...i can't believe that stuff.

  • See ...at 7:55 ....in the moment that the peple start to think and act for themselves....

What is true is that power in the wrong hands have limited life, until the people decide to act and remove their power.

  • We rode a boat on the river Spree last year. Unreal. Unmoeglich!

  • @PeterMayer Impossible?

  • FIGHT THE POWER

  • Ingenious! These guys were natural commandos. Major congrats!

  • Yeah, what a wonderful place. See how people want to stay. Weg!

  • RIght on my brohter I can't believe there are still people who think GDR was kind.

  • @NEWYORKLIBRE Well you know, there are always those who enjoyed doing nothing but being "taken care" of no matter how badly that was. There always will be those males who never have known, nor will ever know, what being a man, independent and self reliant , is. The thought of such things scares them. They don't think they have it in them. they are cowards and they will try to find faults with freedom because it scares them, it shows them how pathetic they are in the face of freedom.

  • Why would they speak english among each other ?

  • i was thinking the same!!

  • that way the Vopos thought it was foreigners talking. the Vopos did not know it was Germans making an escape..

  • Correct.

  • Wich street they escaped over? Great story...!

  • I loved what those brothers did to get the youngest out. National Geographic channel did the same thing and the brothers said that they put the Soviet star on the plane so to fool the border guards into not shooting down those planes. Their thinking was that the border guards wouldn't dare shoot down something that was from the Soviet Union because if they did they probably would have been executed.

  • Being from Berlin, never heard that story. Thx for adding.

  • Were you an East or West Berliner?

  • West.

  • Let me ask you this,if I went back 20 years and asked you the question would the Berlin Wall fall and the Soviet Union would be no more what would you say? I was 5 when this event occurred, but I didn't give a crap what was going on then because of my young age. How many times did you go to the wall when it was being torn down?

  • Once you are a Westberliner you stay a Westberliner lifelong - same as for Eastberliners. Our socialsation went over the two parts. The generation nowadays can't even say who were the political leaders back then - we duo-Berliners remember almost everything concerning that period of time.

  • I was 19 at the day of Nov. 9th 1989. We sat on the wall that night and after we have heard it on the news, haven't gone to school the next days (as many haven't) and dreamt about how one can mix the best out of the two systems. Been at the wall and in the East a lot before 1989.

  • I believe that even though Hungary and Czechoslovakia opened their borders up it was like big cracks in a damn to see that East Germany was in big trouble. Still can't believe the flood gates just opened when some Politburo member, yes I know its Gunter Schobowksi, was the main person for the collapse of the wall just because of an error of his part for not reading that report correctly and saying that the effects would be "Immediately"

  • No system works 100% & people like Schabowski made mistakes. Though the time was right in 89 like at every revolution. It is for instance doubtful that the GDT bordergards would have shot at the people - simply because they were one of them too and felt the changes as well and when powers lose their impetus. A lot is psychology.

  • In a National Geographic special on the Berlin Wall they actually interviewed former East German Army soldiers and said that if the Border Guards couldn't contain them that the Army was ready to shoot them, they had enough ammo for WWIII. Luckily no one had the gall to do that and the Border Guards were given the authority to let the people go through and the rest is history.

  • I think the two Germanys simply wanted to be together again, being one no matter what anybodys elses thoughts and concerns were or how the political map changes or looked like these days. The years 1990/91 were great in Berlin - almost like anarchy like two dogs sniffing at another finding out about the other.

  • I meant to say the best years of your life. I asked that same question to my father once and he said that he thought it would never happen. It was nice to see the people actually rising up and then in Jan 15th 1990 the East Berliners got tired of the Stazi and stormed their place. Still can't believe how many files there were on so many people. 6 million people who were on file that's amazing and scary at the same time.

  • The Soviet Union was far away for us Wessis, how you call Germans from the West (in contrary to the Ossis; Ost = East). 600.000 Soviet troops stationed around the city with 25.000 allied troops - but still it felt safe.

  • Thank you for that historical information you can also find people who have home videos of the S and U train lines during 1988, 1989, 1990 on youtube if you haven't already seen that. We need more people like you to give historical information to people like us to know how hard it was living in area like that back then. Hey at least you can say 1989-1991 were some of the best years of my life, the Wall Fall, Germany was unified, the Soviet Union Fell, West Germany won the 1990 World Cup.

  • Didn't even remebre the world cup. "Best years of my life" - it were exiting years; for me it was a proof that we need less police and control than we think; these years were very tender because of facing the unknown; they were poor years but even then or because of it they were so special and not consuming but producing - if that says something. But also thanx - for asking.

  • I do remember a lot of the Eastern European countries going through an economic repression because of the new transition to a free market economy. Also I bet you remember 1983 where the US and the Soviets got really close to war. Read these two events on google and wikipedia: Stanislav Petrov and Able Archer on wikipedia. This is the closest we got to nuclear war and many didn't even know it.

  • No, I don't remember 1983. Personally I was never afraid of a nuclear war to happen. Nowadays & in my eyes we're closer to a-bomb use than ever. Don't now if one can call it repression - it is like telling a diesel engine to be a jet turbine from now on. We're all socialized, adapted to something. To change adoptation takes decades. Europe does not dfine itslf over the free maret in the first place.

  • To be exact: The figures I still have in mind are that 600.000 Soviet troops were stationed in the GDR, how many exactly around Berlin = ?, maybe a third or fourth of it. The changing years until maybe 94-95 are called "Wendejahre" were special in many cases - too long to list for youtube comments. Two Germans speaking the same language but laughing about a different joke, they had to get along with each other but often did not or did not want to.
