They probably live a relatively comfortable life with a stable food source with their owners in exchange for working. Plus, in nature, groups of elephants often swim long distances across rivers/lakes anyway.

not really, if a elephant is brought up in a zoo or captivity it will learn to live in the area, it wont have a problem with it. but if you take it from the wild and put it in a zoo.... thats not so great. but then again alot of animals like being trated by humans or being around them.
