  • how did that amtrak train even get into grand central this is a very random video but its very nice 2 see something extremely different lol

  • Are you sure this isn't Penn Station?

  • Why did they have a metro north genesis pulling it

  • why dit the amtrak train have Metro North on it? Metro North is the commuter rail that owns the area.

  • Why was an Amtrak Train there?!

  • So how do they go backwards into Grand Central without a cab car wouldn't that be dangerous?

  • im heading there in april

  • what in the world is amtrak doing in grand central

  • whats an amtrak train doing in grand central i thought they run on 34 th st

  • im guessing this is the time the Hells gate bridge got an overhaul

  • I noticed that there was a Metro North locomotive in front....would that be due to the Amtrak locomotive not being able to draw the correct electrical power in the station or something?

  • its because the P32 thats pulling the train has 3rd rail compatability, if the Amtrak P42 was leading, the fumes would sufficate everyone in the station, so they put the P32 in front.

  • but Amtrak has P32s....they use them in Penn Station all the time. Why wouldn't they just use their own hybrid locomotive?

  • beats me, but hey, the photoban makes as much sense as that

  • what photo ban?

  • amtrak issued a photo ban not long ago

  • Metro-North's P32 were built to run on bottom running third rail unlike Amtrak who was built with top running third rail. So Amtrak engine cannot run to GCT cuz the third rail shoes were built too high for the type of third rail that was built for the New York Central

  • @ThaExpress2609 That makes total sense now, and I hope that all future Amtrak and MNRR/LIRR equipment will have this functionality. (quoting @travelbytommy)

  • @travelbytommy Third Rail Power - recall that the MNRR and the LIRR have different collection methods, the LIRR has bottom contact third rail - the more common of the two - so even if their P32's can utalize third rail collection, its near impossible when the contact point is upside down - getting engines/MU's that can operate on both railroads has been a big hassle for the MTA, but I was told by Train538 that later orders of M8's will have a such feature.

  • How the hell could a giant locomotive powered by a tiny third rail possibly pull a heavy train and huge inactive locomotive?

  • I thought Amtrak stopped service to Grand Central and only service Penn, or am I wrong?

  • your correct. There was according to R384010 trackwork that made it come to Grand Central. Normally it doesn't service it.

  • Where was this train going? Buffalo? Reason is i took amtraks Turbo Liner to Buffalo years ago from Grand Central. And i thing they still goes to Toronto. Onterio too.

  • it was going to Albany.

  • Why did it need the Metro North loco? The Amtrak loco was a 700 # which could feed of the thrid rail just like Metro North locos.

  • I personally dont know, they always do that with amtrak trains ot of there.

  • The Amtrak engine cannot use the Metro North third rail, first they are of a different voltage, and the MNRR rail is underrunning, not overrunning.

  • Never knew Amtrak uses Grand Central. Thought Empire Service(Albany) went from Penn Station up the west side, then joining Metro-North when it's crossed the Harlem river(right against the Hudson).

  • this is like, the only train that runs there, the rest goto penn. Correct?

  • This was when there was trackwork around Penn Station, making the Empire Connection worthless, so they had to use Grand Central.

  • it was posted not even 2 days later than it was taken.

  • from the Amtrak website:

Empire Service to be Affected by Metro-North Railroad Switch Replacement Work October 18-19 and 25-26

NEW YORK - On two successive weekends beginning Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 18, and 19 and continuing on Saturday and Sunday Oct. 25 and 26, 2008, Amtrak's Empire Service between New York, Albany and points to the north and west of Albany will be altered so that scheduled track switch replacement work can be carried out by Metro North Railroad.

  • Amtrak Provides Shuttle between Grand Central Terminal and Penn Station

All Empire Service and Ethan Allen Express passengers will be provided with alternate bus service between New York Penn Station and Grand Central Terminal. Some trains will terminate and originate at Grand Central Terminal while others will terminate and originate at Croton-Harmon, (with Metro-North connections between Croton and Grand Central Terminal.)

  • i guess it was on the 26th, i got the date to go there from another vid of amtrak in GCT.

  • do you mean Amtrak serves both Grand central and Penn station??

  • for now yes, well idk if they do NOW but yes

  • That was for trackwork back in October, they do not serve Grand Central normally, they stopped serving Grand Central on normal service trains in 1993 or 1994.

  • ah. I see

  • Antrak stopped service into Grand Central in 1991 once the West Side Line was complete into Penn Station.

  • thats the only reason why i came to GCT that day, to see this

  • I've been really interested in finding the answer to this. Is there and existing track from Grand Central to the tunnel into NJ? I cannot find an older map for the life of me. Obviously there has to be, but I just want to know where.

  • No there never was. What made you thought there was ? Rail service from Grand Central only goes in a northbound direction. However it soon will go East once tracks are put in about six years for LIRR service.

  • Well I know Amtrak ran out of Grand Central before 1991, but Grand Central wasn't a terminus. My question is, what was the path that Amtrak took to get into New Jersey. Are there existing lines from GCT to the Hudson River tunnel?

  • As I said there never was. Amtrak service was always northbound.

For example, if you wanted to go NYC to DC, and it was the 1980s, you still like today have to go New York's other station, Penn Station.

Only Penn Station has train access to Jersey from NYC other than Path service.

Back in the 1980s, you could take Amtrak from GCT to let's say Albany, Buffalo, Chicago, Montreal, or Toronto because the tracks from GCT would only go north.

  • Oh, ok! That makes sense. I thought that Amtrak strictly ran out of GCT and never through Penn until 1991. That makes perfect sense now. No wonder I couldn't find anything haha.

  • So as of now, there are no tracks between GCT and Jersey.

*correction* Amtrak service was always northbound from GCT.

The West Side Line allowed Penn Station to gain northbound access in 1991 so it can go to the same sdestinations that GCT served. Hence that is why Amtrak for budget reasons had no reason to use GCT anymore.

  • @madmaxninja08 Thanks for all the information. Did I understand your post correctly! That the LIRR will be running trains in and out of Grand Central in about 6 years. Thanks

  • Strangely enough the tracks that lead New York south bound Amtrak Service into Penn Station did have a three way junction around Spuyten Duyvill (Bronx)where they meet up with the tracks going north on the GCT Hudson line. Your best bet is to use Google map and follow the Satelite image view on the western part of Manhattan and the Bronx. You can still see where the Junction had tracks removed. Enjoy

  • @taellius nope that was a very long time ago-- that wye has been removed

  • Where was this train going?

  • Albany, New York

  • i want to pee on the third rail!!!!!! btw 5 star pee one third rail!

  • lol it would shock ya, its like pissin on an electric fence

  • it happened to a homeless man at bowery a couple of years ago

  • HAHAH TAKE THAT HOBO!!!

  • You would have to be touching the regular running rails in order to get electrocuted.

  • sorry i missed the day of fun at GCT, but NJ Transit beckoned so i must obey.

  • looool u missed alot dude!!!

  • Not all of them, just the upstate ones. The ones on the corridor are still good.

Its because they are upgrading the switches. Its only temporary though.

  • those ones I want to stay cuz i aint goin to GCT for a keystone no way

  • Awesome video! Why's the MN P32 leading the train?

  • prolly cuz of 3rd rail or something

  • I never thought Amtrak used Grand Central. You sure you were there and not Penn?

  • Amtrak has to use Grand Central instead of Penn for the current time, I forget why, but all Amtrak trains have been redirected, and only the commuter R.R.s stop at Penn

  • hmm, Its prolly cuz due to all of the incoming Bi-levels and LIRR they cant put it in penn station, so yeah. If you went and railfaned at Penn Station before you would know that its in and out, I couldn't pause the camera for 5 min.

  • ohh I see. And that sounds great, I'd like to go there sometime

  • yeah, its louder than it sounds, but I like loud

  • yeah, its not that hard. I never went down stairs and i was on track 32 and that LIRR that I had in a vid was track 112 so... yeah and plus it was very much cleaner. I didn't take 2 subways for nothing. There is a big difference but they are both big stations so...

  • will it ever end?its so long

  • lol, its prolly cuz its a P42 or P40 at the end so it aint gonna use all that power for nothing

  • at the 0:28 mark, you see a car that says "Coach". Good video!

  • thanks!!!

  • np!
