The Government of India asked DRDO to design a tank in 1972, to replace the T-55. The design was completed by 1974. But, the program was shelved for almost 2 decades. Finally, funds to develop the Tank were released in 1996. So, the actual development started in 1996, and not 1972. The program was never funded before 1996.

The Indians don´t know which engine to fit in the LCA since their "indigenous" Kaveri-engine is years from working, if it will work at all. Jet-engine companies from both Russia and France have trying to fix it, but it seems to be at a dead end.Any new engine they choose will require major redesign of the fuselage, thats a few more years of delays. If the LCA ever becomes operational, lets be optimistic and say 2015, it will however be hopelessly out of date.

Instead, it continues to perform endless flight tests and most of these tests were also failed. The LCA failed to replace the ig 21 in a timely manner, this does not mean it wont be inducted and serve with distinction. India will finsih this project, make it operational, and develop all major subsystems indigenously and with foreign help. This project will pay off, just not as fast as most would like it to.

It is mostly based on the the plans for the Mig-33 (project 33) single engined alternative to the mig-29 that China purchased from Russia. It is using European Radar and a Russian engine. There is little economic benefit in buying foreign aircraft and off-the-shelf components
Following the JF 17's footsteps? Dude, the LCA program started way before the JF 17. The only reason its late is because of sanctions imposed on india after 1998 and that we are not just cookie cutting a foreign design like pak has done with china for the JF-17 and we did with russia for the Su30MKI. It takes minimum 1.5 to 2 decades for producing a home designed aircraft from scratch, especially something tested as painstakingly as the LCA.
The JF-17 was a copy of Russian aircraft and to some extent chinese aircraft. LCA is first of many true indigineous aircraft built by India. Look up the MCA aircraft which is another one of our concept planes.
India should stop developing their LCA, just keep buying new Russian jets. This is wasting money and time. Well, the Indian new tank.... same thing....
Any country wanting to be a world power (economic or military) must have a domestic arms program. The LCA is the first truely indigenous Asian aircraft. It is not based on any American, Russian or Israeli design. The airframe, flight-controle, engine, radar, weapons systems are all developed domestically. The pay-off to future projects is huge.
Has the program proved to be expensive and painful? YES. However, so have the Eurofighter, Rafale and F22 to name a few; all from advanced nations.

world can’t figure out India when it comes to projects like Arjun & LCA. Arjun-project started in 1972 & now almost 40 years later all they have shown only four prototypes, same story with LCA. It's world first fighter aircraft which has been inducted but still need operational clearance.

Secondly, No plane in the world demonstrates full operational capabilities at IOC. PV Naik clarified the same day that he meant that at IOC the plane already has capabilities of a 3.5 gen plane and by FOC it will reach 4.5 gen full operational capabilities. Next time you try to twist words, make sure there are no Indians around to call your bluff.

About Arjun, let me educate you on the real facts of that project.
The Government of India asked DRDO to design a tank in 1972, to replace the T-55. The design was completed by 1974. But, the program was shelved for almost 2 decades. Finally, funds to develop the Tank were released in 1996. So, the actual development started in 1996, and not 1972. The program was never funded before 1996.
By the way, over 200 Arjuns are already in service in Rajastan. Watch out!

DRDO chief VK Aatre had said about the LCA Tejas’ “We have developed a fighter aircraft in 30 years and it still have a long way to go”. Air Chief PV Naik’s gave critical remarks at the initial operational clearance (IOC) of LCA that "LCA is just a 3 or 3.5 generation aircraft when it was actually supposed to be developed as a fourth generation one and and it will be used in IAF with limited operational capability", exposes IAF’s dissatisfaction with LCA’s development.

The Indians don´t know which engine to fit in the LCA since their "indigenous" Kaveri-engine is years from working, if it will work at all. Jet-engine companies from both Russia and France have trying to fix it, but it seems to be at a dead end.Any new engine they choose will require major redesign of the fuselage, thats a few more years of delays. If the LCA ever becomes operational, lets be optimistic and say 2015, it will however be hopelessly out of date.

Bharat is the only country of its size that is unable to produce aircraft,missiles or choppers.It has had to purchase most of its arms from Russia which is ever more reluctant to share technology.After three decade of design & development,Delhi has failed to produce an operational plane.The project is years away from its completion.They are still confused which foreign engine to use.Delhi’s attempt to build missiles is a humongous tragedy of errors frustrating the indians at highest levels.

January 2009 ADA sought assistance from EADS to redesign the Tejas undercarriage and help reduce the weight of the fighter which is already 1.5 tons heavier than envisaged. Some of the other problems that ADA needs help with are fuel distribution, uneven braking, flight controls, environment controls and testing.ADA is still struggling with its engine although they have decided to use American F404-GE-IN20 but that needs to redesign the whole plan.almost a failed project.

The LCA was a flawed project in its early years however due to vast spending on Indians point of view,they couldn't afford to scrap it hence the reason the project is still crippling forward today.India is just making its false claims for LCA in order to influence the the world due to its failure.LCA will be outdated by the time it comes out in full production and India induct it into the services completely by 2015.No one knows as to how many more decades will pass before it becomes a reality.

@powerofthroughts The Indian Air Force on the other hand has with significant assistance from France, Israel, and the United States worked on the Tejas (meaning Radiant) LCA project for over two decades and the aircraft is no closer to induction. Infact it gets worse.
The unit cost of one JF-17 is $15 million dollars, while a Tejas will cost up to $31 million – which is closer to the far advanced Russian Su-30’s starting cost ($33 million).

India’s attempt at indigenous production of weapons has been a colossal failure the likes of which do not exist in the annals of military history. I wonder how long will it take for the LCA probably another decade?Almost a failed project.

First make LCA operational clearance and compare it with any other. while just standing in hanger it is not just more then junk like Arjun (just a resource eater). Even IAF has announced the first squadron will be in be induct by 2017 with limited capability only. You could find these fact on every articles on web.

LCA is underdevelopment from more than two decades since its conception; the LCA has yet to reach production status. Instead, it continues to perform endless flight tests and most of these tests were also failed. Difficulties with its flight controls & power plant (kaveri engine) are still there and the worst of which was the collapse of the engine during high-altitude tests.

Kaveri will not be available as it has failed. Now Indians are inviting foreign manufacturers to submit proposals and help. No one knows as to how many more decades will pass before Kaveri becomes a reality. GE is available but for this LCA required to redesign completely.

India is one of the only major countries of the world that has been been unable to design and manufacture its own planes, tanks and missiles that work. The Key word is “work’. India has struggled for over two decades in designing the Tejas and it is not close to flight trials. The LCA, the Arjun, Trishul, Akash and other missiles are the same failed stories. It purchased hundreds of Flying Coffins which it could neither maintain nor fly.

There is no comparison between a flying eagle (JF-17) and a vulture's baby (LCA) sitting in its nest since 1982. IAF (Idiot Airforce) has announced that thier LCA (LAST CHANCE AIRCRAFT) won't be operational before 2015 (not sure). Whereas PAF will have 250 JF-17 by 2015 and then from 2015 to onward PAF will have JF-17 Block II and stupid indians trying to compair it with thier failed LCA. lol...

I can’t figure out India when it comes to projects like Arjun and LCA. The Arjun-project started in 1972 and now almost 40 years later all they have to show for are prototypes, same story with LCA.

The LCA failed to replace the ig 21 in a timely manner, this does not mean it wont be inducted and serve with distinction. India will finsih this project, make it operational, and develop all major subsystems indigenously and with foreign help. This project will pay off, just not as fast as most would like it to.

Greetings from a Pakistani in the UK. I just wanted to say how proud I am of India for following the JF-17's footsteps and not falling into complete hands of foreign imports. One day these will be flying side by side JF-17 and hopefully we will make LOC permanent border.

Peace is always best. While I am sure the JF-17 is a capable aircraft, it is hardly indigenous. It is mostly based on the the plans for the Mig-33 (project 33) single engined alternative to the mig-29 that China purchased from Russia. It is using European Radar and a Russian engine. There is little economic benefit in buying foreign aircraft and off-the-shelf components

Following the JF 17's footsteps? Dude, the LCA program started way before the JF 17. The only reason its late is because of sanctions imposed on india after 1998 and that we are not just cookie cutting a foreign design like pak has done with china for the JF-17 and we did with russia for the Su30MKI. It takes minimum 1.5 to 2 decades for producing a home designed aircraft from scratch, especially something tested as painstakingly as the LCA.

The JF-17 was a copy of Russian aircraft and to some extent chinese aircraft. LCA is first of many true indigineous aircraft built by India. Look up the MCA aircraft which is another one of our concept planes.

Any country wanting to be a world power (economic or military) must have a domestic arms program. The LCA is the first truely indigenous Asian aircraft. It is not based on any American, Russian or Israeli design. The airframe, flight-controle, engine, radar, weapons systems are all developed domestically. The pay-off to future projects is huge.
Has the program proved to be expensive and painful? YES. However, so have the Eurofighter, Rafale and F22 to name a few; all from advanced nations.
