I LOVE this song I was about 5 or 6 when this song came out. I remember hearing it on the radio and my mom bought the record (tells you how old I am) I love the song back then and I still do today as well. Thanks for posting
I am back in 1975. I am laying in a sleeping bag in Scott Blomberg's basement. WDRQ is on the the console stereo at 1:30 in the morning. "Fox on the Run" by Sweet will be up next, I just know it. Do not bring me back to 2012, just don't.
Crispynougat tendrils greased with clam sauce and loquaciously moistened with chipotle green fatback A1 sauce cheesecat on Wednesday evening around 1 .
Too bad, my dear co-listeners, this is worse than the version I have previously heard, because this is tedious, not really worth the work and not well accompanied. A cover version of this that I once had would put you into extacy. Any opposition, as usual with me, is welcome. Greetings from Helsinki to you all!
Uh, far off? "47th street" is in Manhattan. The song and girl are in Manhattan. The song is about a White Businessman contemplating saving this Jamaican girl, however he decides he'll be "one more john" as she is not capable of functioning in Western Civilization.
This song's about a transsexual/drag queen prostitute in NYC on Lexington [Ave] cross 47th Street. Manhattan's also an Island: hence "Island Girl". Hints like "one more John (one who pays) who made the mistake" meaning his she he rented is really a he. The pronouns switch from male to female describing the same person. Many gay men use female pronouns for other men. The "language" changes as if the drag queen's speaking "black boy WANT you in his Island world" instead of WANTS. Clever writing.
When i listen to this song I imagine myself at a resort hotel by the ocean. I imagine being surrounded by beautiful women and tropical cocktails. I imagine leaving my day job behind to spend 1 year soaking up the sun, dipping in the pool and enjoying the many fine sights by the pool. I imagine getting smashed on pinacoladas while choosing prostitutes (as the theme of this song suggests) to take back to the hotel room for some tropical "bunga bunga" ..... and postcards from Presidento Belusconi.
Apparently not everyone is tolerant of lifestyles which are currently common place throughout society today...
By degrading any of them they ultimately degrade themselves since they are subsequently a part of all these lifestyles, that is if they are a part of the human race, which could be an explanation in a turnaround for their blatant contempt for alternative ways to live...
@Izeedra im not the one that started with the stupid political jabs using a song that has nothing what so ever to do with politics. the song was about a black jamaican prostitute in the
'far off, distant part of the neva neva landing" we'll call 1975 when it was new, and it still is.
People who hate on homosexuals are usually wanting to try it themselves. In my opinion, homosexuality cuts out my competition for the really beautiful women! :)
There's is something very 70's sounding about this that I both like and dislike equaly about this song both at the same time - probably because it brings to mind everything wonderful and yet so very annoying of that era. Yes, I felt this way even as I was growing up in that time and this song was being played.
I love this song. Remember when I first heard it, thought it was "I Like Girls"...and resonated with me that way....now I like it still, glad I know the lyrics better (also, thought it was "save her from the wrecking ball" at one time) And what's that instrument during the solo....sounds like a musical saw or Theremin!
You fucking Christians are amazing. Turning a comment page on a song written about a prostitute and sung by a gay man into a debate over god's will.
Here's a thought; it is God's(by which i mean my) will that you shut the fuck up. Your religion is nonsense your god is a fairytale and most of us don't want to hear this stupid shit everywhere we go.
I have to agree with you... I am a Christian and we "Christian's" don't want to force anything on anyone. "Christian" is thrown around way too much and the Bible thumpers kill me as well. That being said, I love this song. It has great words and tells a great but tragic story. I loved Elton John from day one. The fact that he is gay doesn't change that. I apologize for all those that drive people away for the sake of religion. Now, let's talk about "All the young girls love Alice"
What sort of Christian, out of curiosity: Orthodox, Catholic, Protestant? Not that it matters, but you have a benevolent attitude that doesn't sound fundamentalist -
Hey SupernalOne, I was born into a Catholic home, split my early childhood in a Lutheran church as an altar boy, was baptized in a Baptist church and now attend a Free Methodist church. Our pastorial staff is amazing and we believe in "loving people where they're at". Too many people sit and judge others when they should be judging themselves. I always joke about kicking out all the sinners from church... all you'd have is an empty building.
Surely, even in the 1970's, the line: "She's as black as coal but she burns like fire / And she'll wrap herself around you like a well-known tyre" was just *WRONG*!!
@Ritzy87 I know. Funny, right? But if you read the lyrics it's pretty obvious (even wikipedia confirms it). But, don't worry, like I said...most people never realized it.
@failingfaster Well, no, it was only rumored to be a male prostitute because of the description of "6 foot, 3.." But that's not for sure. But there's no reason you can't love it like when you were a teen, and just imagine the original meaning in your own mind. Songs are meant to be flexible that way.
@guarddog22 - so many people don't realize you're an ass hole- how do you know how many people do and don't know what it's about? Give people some respect and credit you pompous ass fuck.
@Hawkee316 BUT, as Taupin and John have said, it's perfectly okay to have your own "interpretation", with what it means to you. Some people will just associate it with an Island, or a girlfriend, or one summer....it's all fine.
3 weeks at number 1, 7 weeks in the top 10, 12 weeks in the top 40 and 15 weeks on the charts. He also had 2 other number one hits that year with Philadelphia Freedom and Lucy in the Sky with Diamond. Island Girl was the third biggest song that year right behind Fly Robin Fly (3 weeks at number 1) and Love will Keep us together which spent 4 weeks at number 1. Just in case you were keeping score at home. : )
seriously i don't have time to track all you pathetic bigots down, killing yourself is the only christian thing to do in your situation, it would truly be a great sacrifice on your part and would save me a lot of trouble, not to mention making space for more useful members of the species to thrive.
I'm not an Elton John fan. I've never liked him and I'm a gay man. I do not like people who like themselves as much as he does. He's a fat old guy - who has a lifepartner who's too young for him, because he can afford him.
To SEBBBO77 : I thank you for responding as you did. I have many heterosexual MALE friends, and we get along just fine without any ( cliched ) predatory advances on my part ! ( Joke ... ) And to those who have apparently SWALLOWED the far-right-wing party line, having bought-into the MEDIA'S portayal of how
" QUEERS " ( I despise that " reclaimed " word ) behave in the wild, IT'S BULLSHIT, FRIENDS. Even many gays buy into it. I don't goose-step to the gay SQUEAL of approval. Turn off the TV.
... Everything from Ipods to fat, lazy youth to Jewish-owned media outlets .......... to people spending a li'l too much.....time.....in front....of a........computer ..................... Exactly. As I originally wrote, LIGHTEN-UP. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a life to live. Not a VIRTUAL life, but a REAL one . Oh, and to PHILEUSTACE, your screen name seems a little FEY. You should know what that is, a " free " and " intelligent " thinker capable of addressing global issues. Look it up ....
IT's amazing how insular our culture is, for all its lipservicve to being " connected. "
A man ( full disclosure : a homosexual man .... dead faint ) posts a comment on an internet site featuring a 70's pop tune, asking for folks to kinda' lighten-up, and that person becomes the original straw man, burned alive for all the evils associated with ....whatever. Elton John = gays = same-sex activity = immorality = immigrants = fall of the Roman Empire = people fucking horses = End Times
@Mr111810 ... there is a lot of truth to that statement. You are what you are. You're gay so why can't society celebrate that? Look at all the wonderful musicians who turned out gay - Elton John, George Michael, Ricky Martin - the list is endless. As a FULLY STRAIGHT MAN with a wife and kids, I actually love listening to George Michael music and have been to 5 of his concerts. The fact is that music connects everyone. If you feel victimized listen to George Michael's "I can't make you love me".
@sebbbo77 Most of the societal distaste of same-sex affectional preference springs not just from the
long-held mythologies inherent in the three ( major ) Abrahamic religions but also from the INTRA-personal neuroses tormenting many of these witch-burners. As far as music goes, pop or otherwise, I don't choose to listen to X-artist or Y-artist, because they happen to be homosexual. Couldn't care less. It's about the MUSIC. Pop, heavy metal, classic rock, classical symphonies ( my favorite. )
lol@phileustacee - I have nothing against gay people like you seem to have but I do believe there is some sense in what you are saying. Many gay people do live for the moment and fail to see the wider consequences of society. Same goes with hippies who have basically enslaved our youth to accept multiculturalism where jobs are scarce and being taken up by punjabs and asians. Its a common problem for western society in general although the gays are not entirely to blame ;) Show some heart !
@sebbbo77 True. Harsh. I am a gay male who actually finds repulsive much of the gay ( so-called ) community. I am a very conventional, stable, hard-working person. I spend my evenings HOME, not in the back room of a " club. " I don't own any Cher albums ( could care less ), have never DVR'd the Bravo Channel, and I actually own my own home and ( gasp !! ) save ( quite a bit ) for my retirement. ( So much for transient, momentary living. ) I also VOTE and donate charitably and am MARRIED. Shock.
I agree with Sebbo. The youth of today are obsessed with eyes glued to a screen almost 16 hours a day straight. I dont think anyone is being pessimistic! Sebbo is expressing the truth. The youth of the 70's and 80's were a lot more physically active, challenged their minds through other forms of media both written & observed. Nowdays its just computers, commercialisation and the standardization of culture via jewish owned corporations. GIVE BACK youth what they deserve ! Freedom of choice !
@phileustace Wow. Looks like I touched a nerve. In your one-dimensionsal view, I spend my nights dancing away in clubs ( " Next round of pink squirrels is on me, boys ! " ) and personifying every stereotype you ( claim to ) abhor. Ya' know, there's a time and place for everything. An ol' Elton John tune is not, as I wrote, a cause for a crusade. What's your problem with that ? " Superficial argument .... " ? Sounds good, learned, yet it's pointless. Sorry I upset you so. Work hard. Be well.
This song brings back a lot of memories. When it came out I had a 67 GTO and was banging a 5'2" hundred pounder. Some time later she totaled it. I miss that car.
i remember this song on my vacation to hawaii around 1997. i ended up catching typhoid fever on my trip. but it was will worth it! i survived thanks to elton john
@AHappyMan141 Back in the 80s I had a girlfriend from the islands, she stood 6' and she did like to scratch my back though it felt more like a razor, must be a Caribbean custom.
I love this song. I had such a crush on a gal from Winona Lake. Of course she had no idea I was even alive, but in my mind this was our song. Oh to be young again!
dunno could be 'bout a man, but just cuz he's gay, dusnt meen so prob a girl, and its writen by guy whos not gay, and it's called island GIRL.........i luv the begining
@thruster37 You mean illiterate pc orc -honest to god, I just can't take this crap anymore! thanks for having the guts to speak up! ps : realsoulproduct - do a little homework before crying racism like a frickin Obamatron!
@therealsoulproduct You idiots keep embarrassing us digging up trouble that should have been dead and buried over 40 years ago in the 20th century like Jesse Jackson and Al Shapton keep digging up. I live in the 21st century, not still with the 20th century 1960s civil war everyday. I have moved forward a longtime. That is what most of the rest of us should already have been doing a longtime ago but most of us are not.
@BBQFanNo1 Obviously a response from a conservative. Look, I'm just stating a reality check about the lyrics here, aiight? And yes, I'm always moving forward but the more things change the more things stay the same. Racism still exists even today. And as long as it does I'm gonna have something to say about it, like it or not. Don't make me have to defend myself here again.
@sweetcandy990 Given the context - Elton being homosexual - and the lyrics stating "she stood 6'3" in can be perceived as being about a man. Although John hadn't, at the time this song was released, come out of the closet yet. You may refer to Wikipedia's entry regarding this song for further information should you be interested in a more detailed account.
@sweetcandy990 It's a legitimate question actually. Back in the 70s when this was released weirdness was just beginning to become an acceptable mode of lifestyle.
@duvexy ..... That is exactly right. Today is not progress at all. WAR, cross cultural hate, incompetent governments. tax fraud, decline in social awareness, absence of common sense, alcoholism, drug abuse, cruelty to animals, materialism .... it just goes on and on. And they called the 80s the "selfish decade" ?! Just take a look at the spoilt generation Y brats of today with their ipods while staying home and not paying a cent till they reach 35. Now thats what I call "selfish" !
@sebbbo77 well you know the 80s started society's obsession with material & wealth but I do agree to the fact today's generation have became worse than the 80s young generation & society has degenerated into nothing because you would think all of the racism would've died & been buried in the 70s, but as an individual, it's your job to live the way you think society should live & that means loving all cultures and being sensible to all types of social awareness even if you can't relate to them.
@PopCulture20 the 1945-1980 golden years of america especially the seventies. the 80's and reagan, the materialism was the begining of the end. The 80's completely shunned the seventies it was really disturbing...
@sebbbo77 Sadly it has not. In fact it is even worse condition than when this song was released in 1975. People are too worried focusing their priorities on the wrong and least important things with their time than they should be on the most important priorities. It is actually our baby boomer generations fault for not raising the next generation of kids with the most important priority values that our parents or guardians raised us with.
@sebbbo77 Cruelty to animals? If that is aimed at those of us who partake in the will of God by eating meat, I disagree whole heartedly. As far as actual animal cruetly, we, as a nation have become stupid with animal rights laws. In many situations, animals have laws with stronger penalties protecting them than women and children subjected to domestic abuse, neglect and many other forms of violence. Animals are not equal to humans and here for man's use, not to be worshiped.
@kelckeri I don't know if "it's the will of God" to eat meat ("thou shalt eat meat, or go to hell"), but I certainly don't there is anything wrong it, though overindulgence in ANYTHING (even water - you can actually drown or have a perforated stomach from drinking too much water) isn't health-wise a good idea. Animals are here for man's use, but they aren't ONLY here for man's use...
@shmuli9 I don't think it's a mandate to eat meat or face going to hell, but it's surely within the Will of God for us to use animals for the purpose of food. As God said in the Book of Genesis, man was given dominion over all the animals of the earth. And that my friend says we have superiority and the rights to animal use. Jesus Himself fed many thousands of people with meat....
@kelckeri I agree with you... Though how you can relate this song to religion is beyond me, though I've physcially heard things like "As a Christian, I like JIF peanut butter". Oh, and Jesus also drank wine (and not only that, but turned water INTO wine), and since "the Savior" did, that would imply that the Will of God wants us too, as well.
@sebbbo77 Yes, we have departed from God's way of life. Love God, love your neighbor, honor your elders, do justly, love Mercy... We are FAR from His ways.
this song totaly kicks ass... back in the late 70s early 80s i was a beekeeper... i recall driving my bee truck down the trails of the piney woods of S.E. GA... when the gallberry flow was on I was rocking out to this song... that was Willacoochee GA... OMG now I am in living in both Alaska and Maine... and i am still rocking to this song... Elton John I appreciate him more as I get older
like michael jackson elton is a legend is well loved by many of the American public and around the world.I was i'd say round 5 year's old when i first heard his music which is do'nt go breaking my heart like 1975
This is one of my old time video's loved it then love it now Elton John has been rockiin us since I can remember and is still rockin us I guess until he is gone but still his music will live on
Is that a theremin in the instrumental break?

even though that song spent three weeks at number 1 in the fall of 1975, how many weeks does that song stay on the top 40 chart?

@thefirefighter2011

Mr111810 11 months ago
IT's amazing how insular our culture is, for all its lipservicve to being " connected. "
A man ( full disclosure : a homosexual man .... dead faint ) posts a comment on an internet site featuring a 70's pop tune, asking for folks to kinda' lighten-up, and that person becomes the original straw man, burned alive for all the evils associated with ....whatever. Elton John = gays = same-sex activity = immorality = immigrants = fall of the Roman Empire = people fucking horses = End Times
wet-dream.
Mr111810 11 months ago
@Mr111810 ... there is a lot of truth to that statement. You are what you are. You're gay so why can't society celebrate that? Look at all the wonderful musicians who turned out gay - Elton John, George Michael, Ricky Martin - the list is endless. As a FULLY STRAIGHT MAN with a wife and kids, I actually love listening to George Michael music and have been to 5 of his concerts. The fact is that music connects everyone. If you feel victimized listen to George Michael's "I can't make you love me".
sebbbo77 11 months ago
@sebbbo77 Most of the societal distaste of same-sex affectional preference springs not just from the
long-held mythologies inherent in the three ( major ) Abrahamic religions but also from the INTRA-personal neuroses tormenting many of these witch-burners. As far as music goes, pop or otherwise, I don't choose to listen to X-artist or Y-artist, because they happen to be homosexual. Couldn't care less. It's about the MUSIC. Pop, heavy metal, classic rock, classical symphonies ( my favorite. )
Mr111810 11 months ago
lol@phileustacee - I have nothing against gay people like you seem to have but I do believe there is some sense in what you are saying. Many gay people do live for the moment and fail to see the wider consequences of society. Same goes with hippies who have basically enslaved our youth to accept multiculturalism where jobs are scarce and being taken up by punjabs and asians. Its a common problem for western society in general although the gays are not entirely to blame ;) Show some heart !
sebbbo77 11 months ago
@sebbbo77 True. Harsh. I am a gay male who actually finds repulsive much of the gay ( so-called ) community. I am a very conventional, stable, hard-working person. I spend my evenings HOME, not in the back room of a " club. " I don't own any Cher albums ( could care less ), have never DVR'd the Bravo Channel, and I actually own my own home and ( gasp !! ) save ( quite a bit ) for my retirement. ( So much for transient, momentary living. ) I also VOTE and donate charitably and am MARRIED. Shock.
Mr111810 11 months ago
I agree with Sebbo. The youth of today are obsessed with eyes glued to a screen almost 16 hours a day straight. I dont think anyone is being pessimistic! Sebbo is expressing the truth. The youth of the 70's and 80's were a lot more physically active, challenged their minds through other forms of media both written & observed. Nowdays its just computers, commercialisation and the standardization of culture via jewish owned corporations. GIVE BACK youth what they deserve ! Freedom of choice !

Not everything is a march, a crusade or cause for a parade.
And I say that as a gay male.
I don't feel oppressed., and i would, not have felt oppressed in 1975, either. I have guts. And skills. And a talent for living.
Ya' want progress ? BE A CITIZEN, WORK, PAY YOUR FAIR SHARE, BE A GOOD NEIGHBOR, AND ..... shut-the-*!@#^%!! up.

Work hard. Be well.

therealsoulproduct 1 year ago
@therealsoulproduct You idiots keep embarrassing us digging up trouble that should have been dead and buried over 40 years ago in the 20th century like Jesse Jackson and Al Shapton keep digging up. I live in the 21st century, not still with the 20th century 1960s civil war everyday. I have moved forward a longtime. That is what most of the rest of us should already have been doing a longtime ago but most of us are not.
BBQFanNo1 11 months ago 2
@BBQFanNo1 Obviously a response from a conservative. Look, I'm just stating a reality check about the lyrics here, aiight? And yes, I'm always moving forward but the more things change the more things stay the same. Racism still exists even today. And as long as it does I'm gonna have something to say about it, like it or not. Don't make me have to defend myself here again.
Meanwhile, let's just enjoy the song. ;-)

@123xconnieb is this about a man or woman?
sweetcandy990 1 year ago
@sweetcandy990 Given the context - Elton being homosexual - and the lyrics stating "she stood 6'3" in can be perceived as being about a man. Although John hadn't, at the time this song was released, come out of the closet yet. You may refer to Wikipedia's entry regarding this song for further information should you be interested in a more detailed account.

And they call today progress? Yeah right? Lets go back to the 70's and 80's
duvexy 1 year ago
@duvexy ..... That is exactly right. Today is not progress at all. WAR, cross cultural hate, incompetent governments. tax fraud, decline in social awareness, absence of common sense, alcoholism, drug abuse, cruelty to animals, materialism .... it just goes on and on. And they called the 80s the "selfish decade" ?! Just take a look at the spoilt generation Y brats of today with their ipods while staying home and not paying a cent till they reach 35. Now thats what I call "selfish" !
sebbbo77 1 year ago 5
@sebbbo77 well you know the 80s started society's obsession with material & wealth but I do agree to the fact today's generation have became worse than the 80s young generation & society has degenerated into nothing because you would think all of the racism would've died & been buried in the 70s, but as an individual, it's your job to live the way you think society should live & that means loving all cultures and being sensible to all types of social awareness even if you can't relate to them.
PopCulture20 1 year ago
@PopCulture20 the 1945-1980 golden years of america especially the seventies. the 80's and reagan, the materialism was the begining of the end. The 80's completely shunned the seventies it was really disturbing...
lockenjr 1 year ago
@sebbbo77 Sadly it has not. In fact it is even worse condition than when this song was released in 1975. People are too worried focusing their priorities on the wrong and least important things with their time than they should be on the most important priorities. It is actually our baby boomer generations fault for not raising the next generation of kids with the most important priority values that our parents or guardians raised us with.
BBQFanNo1 11 months ago
@sebbbo77 Cruelty to animals? If that is aimed at those of us who partake in the will of God by eating meat, I disagree whole heartedly. As far as actual animal cruetly, we, as a nation have become stupid with animal rights laws. In many situations, animals have laws with stronger penalties protecting them than women and children subjected to domestic abuse, neglect and many other forms of violence. Animals are not equal to humans and here for man's use, not to be worshiped.
kelckeri 11 months ago
@kelckeri I don't know if "it's the will of God" to eat meat ("thou shalt eat meat, or go to hell"), but I certainly don't there is anything wrong it, though overindulgence in ANYTHING (even water - you can actually drown or have a perforated stomach from drinking too much water) isn't health-wise a good idea. Animals are here for man's use, but they aren't ONLY here for man's use...
shmuli9 8 months ago
@shmuli9 I don't think it's a mandate to eat meat or face going to hell, but it's surely within the Will of God for us to use animals for the purpose of food. As God said in the Book of Genesis, man was given dominion over all the animals of the earth. And that my friend says we have superiority and the rights to animal use. Jesus Himself fed many thousands of people with meat....
kelckeri 8 months ago
@kelckeri I agree with you... Though how you can relate this song to religion is beyond me, though I've physcially heard things like "As a Christian, I like JIF peanut butter". Oh, and Jesus also drank wine (and not only that, but turned water INTO wine), and since "the Savior" did, that would imply that the Will of God wants us too, as well.
shmuli9 8 months ago
@shmuli9 I don't relate this song to religion. My first post was in response to another post I cannot find. ????
kelckeri 8 months ago
@sebbbo77 Yes, we have departed from God's way of life. Love God, love your neighbor, honor your elders, do justly, love Mercy... We are FAR from His ways.
