When you watch the video, you can notice Jágr pulling his head down when the distance between the two of them is only couple of meters. Ruutu was skating with high speed - probably he had no time to even think about stopping.

Also the helmet Jágr was wearing was an old Jofa helmet – if I'm not mistaken, that helmet had been banned by IIHF like ten years ago (mainly, because it didn't protect its user well enough). The helmet was also what caused the cut on Jágr's forehead.

@vintason The style of playing is not the only difference between them - it's also the role they got on the ice. Jágr is more like a scorer - and then there's Ruutu who's an agitator. Ruutu is a player who's playing style is supposed to annoy/frustrate other teams. So, no - Ruutu is not "a bruiser", he's a physical player and an agitator.

IMO he didn't do it on purpose - mainly because Jágr still pulled his head down. He has also stated that in fact, his head probably was kept too down.

In my eyes the tackle looks worse than it actually is. But after watching it for a while, it also starts to look ike a technically clean hit. Shoulder to shoulder from side, elbows down and skates on the ice... Seems just like an unfortunate accident to me. :/

Do you honestly think that the players look for those hits? You can't build your playing around that. It's still professional ice hockey.

It wasn't Rudi's intention to hurt him, I'm sure. Mainly because it was Jágr who made the tackle dangerous by crouching. If he had kept his head up, the tackle wouldn't had caused any kind of injury.
