From everything I've read, Rudy was a fun-loving and easygoing guy, liked by everyone. I always liked his movies, but there was a film moment when I realized he was probably a great guy in real life, too. There is a scene in "The Eagle," where he is trying to take off a ring (or put one on, I forget). He is having trouble with it, and he makes a comic face to the camera, as in "Ouch! This really hurts!" It kind of breaks the fourth wall, and seems like the real, nice guy coming through.
I saw that, too, and he was trying to take the ring off and give it to Masha. I think the funniest moment was when he first tugged on it and realized it wasn't coming off, and he kept smiling like, "OK, I'm not gonna lose my cool." I also saw one of his early films, a comedy called "All Night." He was very funny in that, too. It was amazing how versatile he was.

People tend to stereotype actors like Valentino, I think, as these ultra-serious love idols, casting smoldering glances about the room. So it is refreshing when the inner person shines through. In this way, he reminds me of one of his 1930s successors, Errol Flynn. Flynn has also been stereotyped as a swashbuckler and great lover, but an impish smirk always shines through. As if he's letting us know he's in on the joke.
