All you guys with Empy's I forgot to mention that bright lights bother them,I kept mine in a very small closet that had a window that I covered with those bamboo widow blinds,it gave the amount of light you would expect to find in a raiforest floor, just enough to see and not much else.I had a low volt red heat lamp on one side of the tank for "light" and heat, and while black lights make them glow and do not hurt them, they dont realy do anything for them, except make the scorpion cool to look at
The thing about scorpions is,they are very greedy, but have no means of regurgitation, they can eat themselves to death.only one or two a week is plenty.Dont forget misting!emps and tarantulas from rainforest love high humidity.Check out the substrate from ZOO MED or T-REX,its primo jungle dirt.
Why,why, why dose everyone, including all the pet shops i have seen, put Emperors in a sandy desert type enviorment?People! they are from WEST AFRICA,like as in rain forest! If you truly want happy, stress free and robust Empy's,put them in about 4"of forest mulch, partaly bury a half log,a shallow water bowl for them to climb in to,and keep it in a warm, semi dark space, with a low volt red heat lamp on one side.Trust me,they will love you for it.They like it moist and they love to dig
thats not an emperor actually. not the blue-ish tint to it. i think its a heterometrus cyanrus. emperors are much darker than that. a lot of store suppliers make that mistake. i agree with you tho. even if it is an emperor or cyanrus it really should be in some kinda of soil or forest based substrate
exactly, pet shops often do not have a clue about the exotics they sell, plus, movies and TV have always shown scorpions as a "killer of the desert",but most all of the larger species from Africa and Asia are rain forest dwellers that like a lot of mosture.,When I use to mist mine,it would hold up its pedipaps and actualy drink the drops off of them, and would spend a lot of time "swimming"in its shalow water dish, and they love to dig, then sit outside its burrow and wait for dinner.
dont put to many plants,it makes it harder for them to go catch there food, one plant wouldnt be to bad to keep up the humidity. The way I worked out the shelter was to get an apropate sized half log,and semi bury it,the Empy would usualy dig down under it and make a nice den, they love to dig, they also like to get wet,put in an empty container from Cesars, dog food, the little white(shallow) container, kind of stick it down in the turf, mine loved to get in it and get soaked.Try ZOO MED for substrate
That will work, but be carful of your soil.Top sopil from nursury stores can containt harmful if not deadly chemicals and pestisides.and dirt you go out and dig up can contain parisites, ditto for mulch and sagnum moss and those logs, you can kill those by microwaveing a bunch for 2-3 min.Thats why I prefer the substrate from Zoo Med or T-Rex,its perfectly safe, you get a lot of it(its condensed)and its the ideal texture.Dont forget to mist and a shallow water dish.
Yes,they are greedy, and can literly eat themselves to death as they can not regurgitate.1-2 crickets per week is plenty, keep cage decorations to a minimum(extra plants and such) as it make it dificult for the scorpion to find and catch its food.
a 4-5" coco fibre, plantation soil, or simmilar earthy substrate kept moist. there come from tropical forrests and need higher humidity to do well. she might burrow too..
Yes,she will most likly love to dig, that substrate from ZOO MED OR T-REX worked out fine for digging, about 4-5" that and a shallow water dish and its a happy camper

Dont use sand as a substrate. Try T-Rex jungle bed.

Hey where can I get one of these scorpions and are they very easy to take care of and handle? If you get stung to you have to go to the hospital?
