Don't worry about all the laws and regulations because the device was decommissioned years ago when the barrel began to bulge. I know the wierd camera angle makes it look like the people are in front of the gun but in reality they are around 50 yards to the right and maybe 10-20 feet forward so they were well clear of any possible danger. But thanks for all the concern and good advice. Now watch the video one more time and this time enjoy it for its unique qualities.

ANY distance in front of the muzzle is too much. There are NO exceptions to that rule, check out any shooting range and you will see the same reflected in the shooting lanes and positions.

BTW, its impossible to know the pressure being created w/o knowing the yield strength of the material.
What kind of powder are you using? Black powder, or 'normal' gun powder? If youre using the latter, you run the very high risk of killnig yourself with something like this, it will take a heat treated alloy to withstand the pressures. Hope you have a good heat treater before you blow up yourself and your friends.

is this thing registered? It IS a weapon you know, and MUST be registered. Also check laws regarding forward pistol grips on PISTOLS, it doesnt matter that is single shot because of the date of manufacture.
You are not only pushing the limits of the gun, but of NFA rules, and BATFE laws - you are asking for uncle sam to ass rape you w/o lube, just so you know. Get caught with that thing and you are TOAST pal.
at 1:43 its almost as if its a cuncusion granade that u can aim. if the slug dosent go far it dosent matter because in preety sure the cuncussive force alone would permanently cause brain damage to anyone stupid enough to stand in front of the barrel. i got an idea try makeing R candy and mixing into it 1/3 black powder and than wraping it tightly in glued and laminated cardboard without the slug. that way u will have a powerfull cartrage.
Ammo is just a lead .50 cal. ball. It basically keeps the smokeless powder from coming out the end. I don't know exactly how much powder i put in. But if you take an empty 12 gauge shot gun casing and fill it like three times thats how much powder we put in for the big bangs. The ignition was just a short fuse in the back. The lead ball goes very slow and not very far but the gun kicks really hard and the muzzle flash was awesome. The vortex ring was the weirdest part.
You're right. We cram so much powder in the barrel that the lead ball's only purpose is to hold the powder in. The ball only goes a little ways and not very fast. But a functional weapon wasn't our goal. We just wanted a big kick. something hard to hold onto. thanks for the comment.

Projectiles are only really necessary if you want distance. At point-blank range, the presence/absence of the round makes no difference: the force of the expanding gases is more than enough to hole most targets.
@SonofPencilHead Well yeah... if you're touching the target with the muzzle... otherwise anything over a few yards away is unharmed. Notice the water bottle didn't even fall over from the shock wave.

Awesome video, but be very careful. From the footage I see smokeless powder being put into the gun. Obviously this creates enormous pressures. Are you shooting a bullet of some kind?....If you are packing powder down the barrel, you are breaking the grains of powder; This makes the burn rate even higher....Get with someone that has made small ground cannons....I've seen one launch pop cans filled with concrete...They would be the one's to ask about safe loads.
Thanks for the concern. The projectile was some .50 cal. lead balls. The ball only fit into the barrel about an inch after we packed the powder. Even with the ball so close to the end of the barrel the cannon still began to bulge from the pressure. This was because the burn rate was so quick from the packing like you said. At the time we didn't realize the danger. The cannon has been retired and new one hasn't been made yet. But it will be stronger if we ever get around to making one.
Also, if you drill just a few 1/8" holes around the muzzle facing back at about a 25 degree angle, the gas exit thrust will cancel a bit of the recoil. You shouldn't lose much of the shockwave either.
You calculated about the same amout of pressure as my dad did to bulge a barrel like that. I actually think the muzzle brake idea is pretty good. Thanks for the idea. The next model may feature it.
If you do try to make your own porting, please use a test bed and do it at night to see where the flames go! Fire it several times and make sure it does not crack. Maybe talk to a gunsmith to get an idea on the angles. My 375 JDJ has four ports. Two for down pressure and two for forward pressure. Check out magnaport dot com for some ideas. Good luck! Be careful!
Thanks for the concern and advice. I don't plan on doing any modifications to the barrel. I feel lucky as it is to be in one piece considering how far we pushed the cannon.

They do not appear to have constructed an NFA. or a SBR. I see nothing here that I believe violates any CA or federal law.

If youre using the latter, you run the very high risk of killnig yourself with something like this, it will take a heat treated alloy to withstand the pressures. Hope you have a good heat treater before you blow up yourself and your friends.

is this thing registered? It IS a weapon you know, and MUST be registered. Also check laws regarding forward pistol grips on PISTOLS, it doesnt matter that is single shot because of the date of manufacture.
You are not only pushing the limits of the gun, but of NFA rules, and BATFE laws - you are asking for uncle sam to ass rape you w/o lube, just so you know. Get caught with that thing and you are TOAST pal.

muzzle loaders are classified as primitive weapons and are exempt from all ATF laws on registration,SBRs,destructive devices,SBS...ect.

Incorrect, merely being a muzzle loader does not make it exempt. It is also not exempt as a DD merely due to it being a muzzle loader.
State and local laws still apply, and CA law would recognize this as a firearm.

California recognizes .22lr Olympic pistols as assault weapons.
Dunno bout CA, but I live in MA where the laws suck too and I can own and fire a 17th century style naval cannon as long as its muzzleloading.

at 1:43 its almost as if its a cuncusion granade that u can aim. if the slug dosent go far it dosent matter because in preety sure the cuncussive force alone would permanently cause brain damage to anyone stupid enough to stand in front of the barrel. i got an idea try makeing R candy and mixing into it 1/3 black powder and than wraping it tightly in glued and laminated cardboard without the slug. that way u will have a powerfull cartrage.

Ammo is just a lead .50 cal. ball. It basically keeps the smokeless powder from coming out the end. I don't know exactly how much powder i put in. But if you take an empty 12 gauge shot gun casing and fill it like three times thats how much powder we put in for the big bangs. The ignition was just a short fuse in the back. The lead ball goes very slow and not very far but the gun kicks really hard and the muzzle flash was awesome. The vortex ring was the weirdest part.

You're right. We cram so much powder in the barrel that the lead ball's only purpose is to hold the powder in. The ball only goes a little ways and not very fast. But a functional weapon wasn't our goal. We just wanted a big kick. something hard to hold onto. thanks for the comment.

@davefox72 That is false. Igniting half a pound of gunpowder will result in half a pound of gasses and residues being violently accelerated to several times the speed of sound. Even with no projectile, that will still result in substantial recoil.

I assume you're aware that the only violation of said law is in nuclear reactions, but I doubt that even you would believe gunpowder to be fissile material. Assuming instantaneous conversion of solid to gas, the volume of the gas would be the same as that of the bore. It's the pressure that's important. Knowing that, calculating the hoop stress on the barrel would be childsplay.

Projectiles are only really necessary if you want distance. At point-blank range, the presence/absence of the round makes no difference: the force of the expanding gases is more than enough to hole most targets.

Awesome video, but be very careful. From the footage I see smokeless powder being put into the gun. Obviously this creates enormous pressures. Are you shooting a bullet of some kind?....If you are packing powder down the barrel, you are breaking the grains of powder; This makes the burn rate even higher....Get with someone that has made small ground cannons....I've seen one launch pop cans filled with concrete...They would be the one's to ask about safe loads.

Thanks for the concern. The projectile was some .50 cal. lead balls. The ball only fit into the barrel about an inch after we packed the powder. Even with the ball so close to the end of the barrel the cannon still began to bulge from the pressure. This was because the burn rate was so quick from the packing like you said. At the time we didn't realize the danger. The cannon has been retired and new one hasn't been made yet. But it will be stronger if we ever get around to making one.

Also, if you drill just a few 1/8" holes around the muzzle facing back at about a 25 degree angle, the gas exit thrust will cancel a bit of the recoil. You shouldn't lose much of the shockwave either.

If you do try to make your own porting, please use a test bed and do it at night to see where the flames go! Fire it several times and make sure it does not crack. Maybe talk to a gunsmith to get an idea on the angles. My 375 JDJ has four ports. Two for down pressure and two for forward pressure. Check out magnaport dot com for some ideas. Good luck!
