  • This is a really bad way to teach this, I have just done the same question in 6 simple lines...

  • when finding the tangent don't you times the gradient by -1??

  • you multiply by -1 if the gradient of the normal is required.

    mathstutor

  • No, the gradient of the normal is -1 divided by the gradient of the tangent

  • Thanks really helpful notes, i'm taking my core 1 maths paper in jan 09 so hopefully your videos and my notes will help me achieve my grade ..

    MathsStudent ;)

  • as long as the method used obtains required equation examiner will not mind which method used, as long as it is clear.

  • 3-4+4=3? does not bodmas apply to this particular equation?

  • BODMAS is Division & Multiplication before Addition & Subtraction, it is NOT however the order of Division OR Multiplication and Addition OR Subtraction. It need not be BODMAS could be BOMDSA or BODMSA or BODMSA but these are not so easy to pronounce! So 3 - 4 + 4 = "from left to right" = (3 - 4) + 4 = -1 + 4 = 3. Or you could write as an addition: So 3 - 4 + 4 = (+3) + (-4) + (+4) = 3. OR use a BODMAS friendly calculator and get my answer.(all scientific calculators are BODMAS) mathstutor

  • Indeed I agree with the answer as I would have calculated, but in my conscious Bodmas came into my mind , you have explained this clearly and with great precision, thanks ..

  • @jagexbluedragonarmy wow are u actually doin a level maths lol

  • i was always taugh to use y-y1=m(x-x1)when you want to find the equation of the tangent at any point

  • try watching again.

  • wat????
