just finished the book before i die its by jenny downham the main character tessa told her told to play this song at her funeral and the book is just amazing you all must read the book
Sufjan's tunes have complimented my moods this year. Through my father's cancer diagnosis, hospital stay, death and my mourning, I've found such comfort in Sufjan's music.
There is such a poetry in Jenny Downham's writing, she is able to spin such gorgeous words. And she is able to choose gorgeous music to complement them beautifully.
I'm so glad to see that I'm not to only one who searched for this song because of the book called "Before I Die". What an amazing book, everyone should read it.
How can you say that? There are moments of joy and moments of sadness and yielding, humility and mourning for Christ's crucification... it's a dumb-foundingly bitter sweet thing.
The book I just read, before I die. This was her choosen funeral song. I love Sufjan, and had never heard this particular track until now. Its beautiful.
hahahaha I'm holding the book right now and I can finally see why she wanted it at her funeral....I just finished the book and to Johnplaystuba the book is called Before I Die by Jenny Downham it's great you should read it.
Well, Sufjan did actually play piano for them on the album The Boxer if i'm not completely wrong. It was on two songs, don't remember the names at the moment though.
Beautiful song. Despite your creed. All great songs have multiple meanings. And I'm sure Sufjan would himself say, that it doesn't matter what he wrote it about, find your own meanings.
You will go out with joy and be led out in peace. The mountains and the hills will break into songs of joy in your presence, and all the trees will clap their hands. Isaiah 55;12
I am unsure of why some many people say, "It's beautiful, anyway," because God is mentioned. It's like the Cocteau Twins in the sense that the music id beautiful despite us not knowing the lyrics. Better yet, Sigur Ros. And if it is about God...good.
i was about to disagree with you, and then you mentioned sigur ros and i was mollified.
The reason so many of us are so easily turned off by the mention of god is how often it used to cloak and bolster messages of hate. I have listen to a lot of sufjan's stuff though, and I only feel love from his music.
Surely you can tell many of his songs have a certain sense of Christianity to them, but I love the ones that you have no idea what they mean, just like Sigur Ros! I think if you know exactly what a song means, there's no longer that mystery and it's not as intriguing as it would be. I don't know if I'm making sense but I agree with you haha.
So, so gorgeous...I would love to hear him play this live someday. And I agree...all the songs off of Seven Swans lend themselves beautifully to orchestral interpretation. His live version of the song Seven Swans always leaves me with goosebumps.
Hearing the songs live off of Seven Swans really brings the album to a higher level. The songs flourish in symphony with Sufjan's delicate voice. It makes everything that more alive.
And this song reminds me of a folktale, something with wandering trees and giants, etcetera etcetera..
Does anyone know where I can get the audio for this? It's a masterpiece!!!

This song is about Isaiah 55:6-13.
rofreder36 3 years ago
There is a verse in the bible that talks about: if no one will praise/worship God, then the rocks and trees will cry out.
rofreder36 3 years ago
Is this song actually about god? I thought it was a love song. Maybe it's both or his love for god?
"I am throwing all my thoughts away"
It's beautiful anyway :)
