@walkinglikeaboss If a battery was that dangerous the military would use them to breech doors, if you don't feel comfortable doing this, then I agree you should just buy a new battery. It would be silly to go buy a volt meter, some scrap wire, and another battery to jump start the bad one. This video is assuming the person already have these things. Many have saved money by this, it's been over a year now and i'm still using that battery in the video.
Depends, Check the voltage of the bad battery, if it is just a couple volts, then most likely.
The idea is to just get it to a chargable level, the voltage isn't really that important on the good battery or power source ( as long as it is DC), so the jump starter, yeah it will work, just don't hold it to it, give it just a couple quick taps.
Normally when a battery runs out it still has a few volts in it, if it falls below a certain voltage the charger sees it as a bad battery.
@jro9001 From my experience when a laptop battery goes, it is done, unless it worked fine and was put it the closet or storage for an extended period of time, then it might, but I think your looking at a new battery, with things like a drill or nailer, usually the case is that it worked fine then sat for months, meanwhile the battery falls below the minimum charge level so a boost will save it. this is usually not the case with laptops.
@jro9001 laptop battery is likely Li-ion dummy!! So, you should do it! Just make sure you follow the same steps but instead of DC power, use A/C from a stripped cord coming from a wall outlet and leave it for about a day!
There are even people who do connect broken batteries to a household power outlet at 110v for 10secs or so, but I really don't recommend it. I wouldn't even try it myself.
But they say it works. Until the battery explodes, and they may change their mind. Don't play with batteries. Your health is worth more than the cost to replace the battery
You are absolutly correct, the bat. is not FIXED and will eventually die, but at least you can get some more life out of it, with the price of them....its worth trying, but as other have stated trying to put it on and of the charger several times may be worth trying first.
Your way will in fact work on most cases, and is much easier and worth trying first. But what this video shows is when the battery gets beyond this and needs a boost. But even the video is not 100%, this won't work everytime, eventually you will need to replace the battery.
The best way to renew drill batteries, put them into the charger several times very quickly! This generally resolves the fault & allows them to charge as normal I have done this with a couple of 18 volt Makita's & a 24volt Bosch the Bosch would only show two charge bars then stop charging, by plugging the battery into the charger several times (quickly) it went upto 3 bars I carried on doing this, it got to 4 bars - I then kept it in until it beeps to say it's charged & repeated this perfect!!
I'm not sure but I know that some may explode so I really don't know about ~Nickel Metal Hydride~ so I can't recommend doing it. I would do some more research on that type of batt. first.
Great video and info! Will this work if I am using a smaller battery to provide the spike? I have a DeWalt 24V XR NiCd that was sitting for a long time. Now the battery is dead and wont charge. But the highest voltage i have in other batteries is18V.
@Pacuell all you have to do is install the battery in the charger and plug it in and unplug it about 5 times really fast then it should charge like normal, this will trickle the battery and should get it past the fault.
Most likely YES. What's going on is the battery falls below a "chargable" level. And the charger sees it as a fautly battery. By hitting it with another battery you just raise that charge for a briefly so the charger can take over.
CAREFUL..The DE0243 comes in NiCD (Nickel Cadium) and NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) Be sure you have the NiCD. ~ Is the charger giving a fault or does it say its charging but it really don't? If it says its charging and it really don't then the battery is just plain worn out and this won't work. it is dead. if your getting a fault, then you have to stick something in the battery to make the connections since yours don't have exposed prongs. Try a wire coat hanger wedged in and attach gator clip
As long as you don't use to powerful of spiking battery you don't get much heat. As a matter of fact I have done this for several people and at least to the touch I can't tell a difference. Some videos out there are using a welder to do the same thing, I would think that would heat them up pretty fast.
Hey, thats great news you should be able to do this a few times before it truly is dead.
I Spiked this battery nearly a year ago and this past weekend I used it in my nail gun to put a subfloor in my laundry room..........still working great.
I tried this with 2 x yellow top 18v dewalt batteries connected on a loop to make the voltage bigger to shock the 3rd black top 18v dewalt battery and it blew the terminal right off the 3rd black top battery! What did I do wrong?
@flushthatlooeuan After you wired these into a loop you should have had a positive and a negative side. The connections should be made Positive to Positive and Negative to Negative. Another reason may be that all these batteries MUST be Ni-Cd. 3rd you can not have the connections made for more than a second, the idea is to -shock- the battery not deliver a -charge-. Hopefully one of these is your answer otherwise I really don't know if it were me I would have just used one, hope this helps.
Trust me with the amount of information on the internet these days I can tell you for certain that in no way is this your idea and I did not copy you. Besides that did every one else that shows how to do the same thing copy you also. I think not.
@natealb - very good point that I should have mentioned before. This only works on Ni-Cd batteries. The wrong type of battery quite possibly will EXPLODE! Thanks for commenting.
This is awesome I have three dead deWalt batts im going to try and bring back to life! Thanks for this helpful and useful piece of knowledge!

Could I use a good 19.2v battery to do this to a bad 19.2v battery? How about a portable car battery jump starter?

@TheFishtail ya what happened was that i left it on by accident and the battery would be at 0% and would still be running....
when it finally died hours later i think that killed it...

Before a fix can be sought, I would need to know 1st, what is it that fails, ?, what part or parts of the battery stop working ? "ANYONE" ???.

@fuelban The battery don't take a charge then after it does, its saved a bunch of people some money.........thats all we need to know.
As previously stated this is not actually fixing the battery, but it you can get some more life out of it before replacing it, i'm all for it.
The comment is appreciated though.

You're not really fixing the battery, you're just fooling the charger. Nonetheless,
it's a useful tip.
