the boxing kids father is sooo creepy...the way he keeps going on about what he's sacrificed etc. and how he's going to get money off his kids - he jus has a really nasty vibe to him....eeurgh...
@minibabes08 maybe - GB is catching up though and I guess it doesn't really matter who is the best now, it is about how they progress - I don't think I've seen any Chinese or Romanian gymnasts of this age so I can't really comment on them!
yeah i know there is a significant improvement in the past few years in British gymnastics which is great. I think Venus is one of the better British gymnasts which i have seen and your right it is about how they progress.
Exactly. The boy's, what, under 10, and he's getting up a 4:45 to run around and do boxing, he doesn't socialise....that's worse than some of the Russian gymnasts.
Here in GB the levels are different. You can choose either 'club grades' or 'elite grades' You can take your first elite grade at age 9 - that is compulsory grade 4, then 3 at 10 and 2 at 11. At age 12 you can become espoir (hope) junior at 14 and senior at 16. So, to answer your question the long way round, she is elite.
In the USA a lot of gymnasts are home schooled. In the UK it isn't so common. A lot of elite gymnasts will have to take 1/2 days or even full days off each week for extra training, training camps and travelling to competitions etc. Usually schools are very understanding!
this dad is setting his son up for HUGE disappointment. sure, he *could* make it big enough to reach his father's expectations, but he's just a kid.
i feel so bad for the kids in this family. their father is trying to live through them. there's a difference between pushing your child to be their best and pushing them to be YOUR best. i wonder how horrible he'll make them feel if they fall short of his goals.
what an awful father.

the mum is right
there is a huge amount of pressure but the reward is huger i.e:
its like working, you have to get up early then get through the day but the money you earn buys you nice things
