  • I am on vacation and decided to make the granny square again. I made many of these 35 yrs ago but could't remember how to start. I also did continuous square's for baby blankets. Thanks again. Cindy

  • @dbeaver7 My dad has a bag of them he made, and he tried to teach me how to crochet when I was little, but since we didn't have more than one hook, and I had asked him about it (at my house, my dad is like a mentor in pretty much anything. We've had some cool discussions xD) so he wanted to teach me. He tried to have me use a pencil, which failed, so he took the pencil downstairs and made a hook out of the tip :) I never really got the hang of anything other than a single row.

  • T H A N K Y O U so mutch for your help i have been trying to learn how to do this for ever. most people go fast when there trying to teach, (not realizing it.) LOL alot of my projects went flying out the window, more then a little frustrating.

  • I adore any man who can crochet!

  • Mike can you make a video thats a little slower i can't keep up :(

  • @rainbowstar74 I agree he starts going so fast, and I cannot see where he loops chains throw. I keep watching but ::holds up the yarn:: my results are nothing like that XD

  • Hmm that lookz like Fun. :D idk how but it does XD

  • ty so much..i just started with your help..wish me luck !

  • Thanks for the great tute!

  • Do you the needle in de stitch when you only have that cirkle, or in the cirkle? I didn't get that. But it lookst great by the way!

  • I have done a couple blankets in the past and needed a refresher on how to start one again....I'm a little confused because when I do my blankets, I don't have to do a slip stitch on every fourth corner the whole blanket and I can't seem to get passed doing slip stichtes after the first one....What am I doing wrong?

  • I agree with Silkorganza, this page is most helpful. Thanks Mike !!

  • Your instructions are clear and I loved that you use a white needle with the blue yarn. I could see exactly what you were doing. I did this some time ago but forgot how. Thanks again.

  • I have been crocheting for about a year...I just love the way you teach. I have bought dvds that don't teach as well as you do.... I will be looking at all of your works... Thanks, Robin

  • MIKEY...slow down

  • Please go just a smidgin slower...move ur thumb....lol sorry

  • GREAT!

  • just made my first granny square 'cause of your video, and thanks to you, i must say i am quite proud of myself!

i tried a couple of months ago using written instructions off the internet on a few other sites and just got totally confused, found your video by accident and voila!

    thank you!

  • Thank you, I did this many years ago and could not remember the stitches, my granddaughter will love you for helping me.

  • Thanks so much for putting this up! It was a great refresher course for me. Very clear!

  • Yay!!! I did it!!!!

  • this video is great, but if i wanted to keep all rows/layers the same colour, how would i go up to the next row/layer?

  • Looks great at the end, but I would say it is WAY too fast! I am a complete beginner and would love it if you could do it much slower so I can actually see what you are doing. Very good if you know what you are doing, but for someone like me, its just too fast. Very good result though.

  • My boring cunt wife used to knit shit all the time until I started soaking her tampons in Jagermeister.

  • very easy to follow for someone who knows only how to make a chain! Thanks!

  • You are great. I appreciate how simple you make things. Thanks.

  • Heyooo Mike! It's really awesome that you're a dude and doing crochet. I'm a poor university student who loves fashion but can't afford it (YET!), so I'm always looking for homemade gems that look beautiful - crochet definitely has a lot of these. Anyway, that's my life.

What got you into crochet? Maybe men doing crochet isn't as unusual as it seems... But I'm a girly-girl in Computer Science so I guess anything is possible =p

  • at last something i can understand, follow and probably do!!!! whew... ! thanks for this !

  • Cheers! A great help, thank you.

  • Mike, I'm not a beginner, I was just using this video as reference. I just thought you might consider revising with better terminology? It was a little confusing when you kept saying stitch when you meant crochet. or building up instead of chain. Just a thought. :)

  • thanks for the video!

  • Thank you for your video, it's the only one that I can understand and am now well on my way to making loads more squares. I have pulled this back several times but have now mastered it.

    Thanks again.

  • thanks so much for the tutorials!!! They are keeping me busy!!

  • Hi Mike, thanks for your clips - I can now do granny squares, a long time ambition of mine. Do you know or have a pattern for making circles in double crochet into a large mat. I tried following a pattern for single crochet circle mats and it is turning up all the way round when I need it to be flat. I love your rainbow crochet creations, I work in rainbow colours a lot. Thanks.

  • mike do you have a video to make a bag

  • thanks for all

  • OMG. You made that seem so easy! I am soooo going to try this now :) Thanks soo much!

  • I really enjoy your tutorials! They are very clear and it is wonderful that you use large crochet hooks for us visually impaired people! Thank you. Can you please construct a S-I-M-P-L-E baby cardigan using only squares and rectangles? Cannot find that anywhere! Thanks

  • I will see what I can dig up.... thanks for sharing your thoughts about my website. :) MKL

  • I usually chain 6 then go in the first stich

  • this has been the clearest example on how to start a granny square!!! thanks!

  • No Problem !

  • i have started but i will have to keep practising with the tension

  • hi ocossa

yes tension will come with practice. Just like it came with your knitting ..As they say practice makes perfect !

    Good luck

  • Im lost. Can you make a video in slow motion on making a baby blanket?? I am 11 and I want to make a blanket for my neice that is almost due. I am just a beginner and only know how to do chain stitches and slit stiches. Please recommend it. :).

  • Hi ! I would practice a bit more on a few more stitches ..maybe the Single crochet or the Double crochet

If you try to make a blanket with the chain and slip stitches it will take you a very long time as the slip stich isnt very wide

If you go to my channel there are tutorials on how to do the stitches

    Good luck !

  • Love your videos. I do knitting and have always wanted to learn to crochet, but knew no one who would teach me. THANKS! My partner loves watching them as well

  • thankyou !

  • I hardly ever hide the tail. I need a trademark

in my work. I will knit things and leave the tails

out and add fringe to it.

    methodist

  • Thank you for the vid. I appreciate that you go at a slower pace than some of the instructional vids out there. As a beginner, it's hard to keep track of what loop goes where. And yes, it's helpful to put a pinky in the circle! I never thought of doing that. Great job.

  • thanks!

  • um yeah what do i do with the tail? i got lost there..how and where do i tuck it in?

  • Did you see how I put the tail so its with the line that I am wrapping my next row around... By doing that, it traps it in for the lifetime of the project. :)

  • omg this vid is SO HELPFUL!!!! im just starting to crochet and it was really confusing before but this vid helped ALOT! thanks so much!!

  • HELLO KATE!!!!!

  • wow I am so glad to find your video! I teach myself everything, knitting, sewing, exc... I have been trying to learn how to do granny squares and well, the books arn't very clear... I would love it if you could show how to do square 14 from 101 Granny Squares by Darla Sims... Awsomeness!

  • i have favorited ur video..very good, but im still having problems following through after the chains are made...and crocheting INTO the circle?? Im not sure. Ive rewinded ur video to make sure, but I think ur crocheting into the middle of the circle and then making chains after u have crocheted into the circle twice? Im not sure...gotta watch again. Out of all of the videos online...urs was the easiest. thanks a bunch. Btw..my bf crochets as well. Hes in WI right now. lol:) thanks

  • after wanting to learn to crochet for years and never getting the hang of it...you have in half an hour got me making granny squares!!!!!!!!,

i still need to work on my tension , but thankyou xxxxxxx

  • just to state an alternative... when i start a granny square i wrap the wool round my finger 20 times then do 24 dc's into the circle... i then continue to do the normal grany square into the gaps :) ... it make a lovely hole-less centre and looks really good when finished :)

  • OMG I have been trying to do this all day and have not been able to fully understand anyone else's vids! Thank you so much for making one that FULLY explains each step, and goes slow enough to follow along! Thank you!! =]

  • AWESOME!

  • Wow! A guy to hooks! Cool!

  • mikey please can you help me i want to put a babys name on my blanket that im almost done with. It's for my best friends 1st. baby and i want to put the babys name on it... i hope u can help me.

  • Thanks Mikey so easy to follow. I just have one question, what do you do with the granny squares? Just keep adding to it? Or do you make squares and eventually attach them all? I'm so confused....l

  • you make a mass amount of them.. then single stitch or slip stitch them together. I've never done a blanket that way, but I should one day.

  • thanks mikey i finally learnt it.... m so happy .God Bless

  • :) That's super!

  • thanks so much for great tutotrials! you go slow enough for a beginner to keep up, but not so slow that i have to fast forward! Your explanations are far more understandable then any other vids i have found so far and the video is easier to see. thank you so much for counting the stitches in the beginning! that was my bigget problem.... THANKS@!

  • I wasnt' sure I was sounding like an idiot counting... lol I tend to do that for myself anyway! LOL

  • awesome job!! i love the way u explain it! Just one question I have just off of my mind: when making my circle what can I do from preventing it to curl inward because its never flat

  • It could be the tension of your string or maybe you need to add an extra chain at the corners... play with that and see what you think.

    :) Michael

  • Thanks so much it was because too much tension on the string thanks !! u wonderful crocheter lol!!!

  • No that was a lucky guess! LOL

  • Thank you for your very clear instructions! Now I can make a blanket. :-)

  • Appreciate your feedback

  • THANK YOU !!!!!!!!!!

  • Your Welcome

  • Thanks heaps Michael, I can now say I understand how to do a granny square, your video's were heaps of help...awesome!!!

  • AWESOME!

  • do you have any that show how to do the color change really slow and with more instruction, otherwise this one was really clear and helpful thanks!

  • yeah there's a tutorial on colour changing for this. :) Michael
