Actually, it is that easy to control (not cure) depression. Check out the book The Mindful Way Through Depression. Mindfulness is really the most effective solution, especially when added to psychotherapy.
Thanks Mark, it's wonderful that scientific studies are being done on the effects of meditation. You are making huge contributions to the world, with your research. Regards from Julieanne
Good intention but a bit poorly delivered and simplistic. It is not that simple to just cure depression by meditating on positive thoughts. It is a far more complex process. If we oversimplify things we will be maligning people with simple expectations and actually causing more harm.
Brilliant Mark, great to speak with you and now hear you speak - viva la YouTube!. In my humble opinion this is some of the most important work on the planet at the moment. Scientific epiphany. Brilliant empirical examples to underpin EQ work with many different groups from all cultures, ethnicity and beliefs. So very sensitively and compassionately articulated as well.
this video was very informative although i dont agree with his disbelief in god i do belive that positive thoughs make for a very healthy brain and a happier life
I found this extremely interesting. You always hear about the "power of positive thinking", but to see actual proof of it is amazing. I agree with him in quite a few aspects. My big idea would be family, my daughter. I am a very religious person, but she surpasses my beliefs in the Gods.
actually, I checked waldman's research. Gallup and Barnas research polls track American concerns every year. personal health and financial concerns compete for position number 1. Religion and spiritual concerns come in as #2-#5, depending on the age group and the way the surveys are conducted. So it's not really a pompous claim. Rather academically astute.
Newberg and Waldman, in their book HOW GOD CHANGES YOUR BRAIN thoroughly documented the benefits of positive thinking. The evidence was so convincing that even Skeptic Magazine published their article supporting how essential optimism is for your health. Adds 2 years to your life, according to Mayo Clinic and Duke University: these were 30 and 40 year longitudinal studies. You can't do better than that. Regarding coexistence: a few angry people can ruin our cooperative, genetic nature
positive thinking crap, we have systematic social problems which need social engineers and independend thinkers to solve them, not people who tell us world peace is achieves by smiling and thinking positive...just ridiculous! tedx is apart from that very good imho
As long as there are opposing "big ideas" in people's minds, there will be no "COEXISTENCE". ...and there never will be. One only has to look at the daily history of mankind to know this.
What a great video and what a wonderful message! His message is to help people understand life, passion and direction in their lives. Everyone should see this and understand themselves and others even more! Thank You
The not so subtle "Dubya" slam that appears in the graphic at 11min 22 sec into this piece discloses that this alleged scientist is incapable of objectivity and neutrality in his work and he therefore deserves no credibility.
I wish all people watch it and make decision to change their thoughts from negative to positive and create wonderful life for themselves and around them.
Really fantastic stuff...why do people from both sides of the debate (religious/scientific) still attack these ideas? I think this is a good indication Mark Robert Waldman is doing a good job with this difficult topic. Artfully presented.
We can read at 1000+ wpm and you are speaking slower than 300 wpm, which is why the university is SO painful and boring. Must be tenured, come on, speed it up ...
In Newberg and Waldman's book, HOW GOD CHANGES YOUR BRAIN, and their previous one, BORN TO BELIEVE, they drew their conclusions based on numerous brainscan studies of skeptics, believers, etc. "I don't believe in...." was associated with lower dopamine levels (pleasure) and more activity in the amygdala (stress, anxiety, fear, arousal). they also say that neurologically, whatever conscious believe we have, there's an unconscious disbelief: binary neural processing.
It's a pity how this perfectly neutral and serious video is misinterpretated in mystical ways by some viewers : "Be positive", "Improve your brain", "God is somewhere in your brain", and all that crap...
Make sure you also check out Yuval Ron's TEDx talk. He plays the Oud, the traditional musical instrument on which the ancient Jewish, Christian, and Sufi spiritual music was composed.
This is an amazing video! I love it! It speaks my language! Spend the time to take it all in! You will effect a positive change in your world and the world around you and that is all good!
I'm curious as to how you determine the difference between a "postive" and "negative" thought. Do you simple use the simple intuitional (ie. wrong) judgement? Or do you simply define 'negative' by the effect you see?
What if you don't have a "BIG IDEA"?
Thank you for your wisdom!

He asserts that disbelief is a negative thought. Not very serious. the rest of the video is serious, though.
