The junior high school near my house has a Simplex 4100U system as well, except it's not a two-stage system, and it does Slow Whoop instead of the Code-3 tone (I heard it go off today as I was passing by and they were testing the system.)
I do not see why buildings or large multi-site complexes use pahsed evacuation systems. They are meant to ease evacuation and minimise disruption but they seem to do the opposite. A fire alarm is meant to activate and signal an evacuation and not fanny around doing pre alarms or staged tones!
@brownguyrav2007 It's a Canadian regulation this one doesn't really qualify as stages as voice evac systems do that in the US but a lot of them will do one beep every second for stage 1 which means there MIGHT be a fire" When a maintenance person or building safety official finds a problem or after a set amount of time usually 5 minutes it will go into second stage where it's typically doing march time that means EVACUATE NOW!
this was a test the city wanted to do. we have a serious trial next door in a court house an they wanted to sim a real alarm and go through all the phases. from 1st to 2nd but didnt work out as planned.
Another question - was this also a test to see if anything had been fixed? For simplicity purposes, I'd have just selected the "All Evac" option on the 4100U, but because of the way this system is designed, IDK if it'd send the whole complex into 2nd stage, or something else...
That's first stage - the the whole system is screwed up. It plays first stage in some areas, and second stage in others. IDK ideally how it's supposed to work, but I think the whole building is supposed to be ringing in the same stage at the same time...
The Simplex message employed in the Canadian versions you test in your videos is clearer and much more effective, in my opinion, than the US version, which features the "Darth Vader" voice. I wonder why more technicians here in the states don't have a choice, or do they? Someone by the name of "Simplextech" has uploaded some of his footage of these tests and I remember him mentioning that he does not like the US-spec message.
well not all us systems have a "darth vadar" voice thats mostly simplex default voice wheelock fire lite and notifier have a more pleasent voice to me
@scootss60 It depends on the contractors They can order a custom message for the system. There is a video on YouTube called Simplex Female Voice Evacuation Message. The male voice was probably more common on older systems. Just because the videos are new doesn't mean the buildings/systems in them are as well
yea the first message is the simplex message. You hear me talking to a lady about using the mic. she reads a speech off a paper for emergency purposes @ 2:45
Im confused! I could hear the "first stage" beeping when the messages were playing. In our UK systems certain speakers and sensor sounders can play individual messages but are all synchronised to play at the same time so you can hear the messages rather than hearing a tone and message.
It is because the alarm system is having a problem. The first stage is just a tone that repeats. After a certain amount of timne, the alarm goes into second stage, which is tones, and then an evac message. The problem was that some speakers were in first stage and some were in second, and that is why the tones were playing at the same time as the message.
yeah pretty much. you can clearly hear first and second stage playing in the building at the same time. If the alarm started main building first the building would play first stage but the first alarm came from the heritage building and kicked ours straight into second with a little bit of first some where in the main building.

Is that woman's voice in the evac message a Simplex default or was it someone from their location that recorded the message?
It's certainly nicer than some of the EST2 messages I've heard where the guy sounded like he had something stuck up where the sun don't shine. ;)

Is that the same lady that created the evac message?
(love the translation!!!!)
JSB1983 3 years ago
no. she is part of a emergency measures team. we treated this as real emergency and everyone was forced to leave.
twoplyboy 3 years ago
Was there any confusion in evacuation orders, because first stage was going off in another area?
weatherdan882002 3 years ago
no. this place really doesnt hesitate alarms. even when its first stage they tend to leave!
