If i do go ahead and purchase the 1TB Samsung Spinpoint M8, can i install it with the data doubler or would i have to move my original hard drive from the main HD bay to where the optical drive was and place the Samsung into the main HD bay?
If i do go ahead and purchase the 1TB Samsung Spinpoint M8, can i install it with the data doubler or would i have to move my original hard drive from the main HD bay to where the optical drive was?
after you install the data doubler, will the hard drive space on the "Finder" application increase accordingly and will i have to save everything to the data doubler when the original hard drive runs out of space?
If you could just give me this information, I'll be sure to buy one!
@drummerkid101 Once you install the data doubler and an additional drive, you have two separate volumes in which to store your data - think of it like an external hard drive inside the machine.
However, if you would rather one large volume, that can be setup by installing two identical drives (one in the main bay, the other in the data doubler) and setting up a RAID using Disk Utility. Feel free to contact our sales or technical support department and they can go through the details with you.
@OWCmacsales Thank you for the information! One more question, how does the performance of the various hard drives on your website compare? I'm looking to buy a 1TB SATA, but I'm not sure how well it will run in comparison to the others since it is so large. Could you refer a specific brand/model with the maximum amount of space AND performance value?
@drummerkid101 Currently we have in stock one option for an internal 1.0TB drive on this machine... the Samsung Spinpoint M8. So if you're looking to purchase today, that would be the avenue to go.
Hi, is the SSD heavier than the optical drive? My main concern is that my computer will get heavier. I use my laptop a lot as a college student, and I need it to be as portable as possible.
@Bymotion The SSD itself weighs much less than the optical drive. When added to the Data Doubler, they're about the same total weight. So you wouldn't be adding or removing any weight to your laptop doing this upgrade with an SSD.
Conversely, installing a traditional, platter-based hard drive with the Data Doubler may add a couple of ounces to the total laptop weight.
@otrebla333 Yes, the Data Double has been confirmed to work with all 2011 MacBook Pro models. It is simply an interface adapter, so it will run at the fastest speed available between the hard drive speed and the system bus speed regardless of model year.
@AndrewTo87 An external optical drive certainly works for the few times it is needed.
We will be carrying an external enclosure soon that will allow you to take the internal optical drive you removed and repurpose it as an external drive.
The use of a magnetic screwdriver is fine for removing and replacing the screws. The NewerTech 11-piece toolkit which we use in all of our instructional videos includes magnetized screwdrivers.
It is so annoying knowing that a lot of high end laptops can have two hard drives AND an optical drive (normally a blu ray drive, while we Mac users are stuck with dvd drives). I love my MacBook Pro, but some things about it just piss me off.
doesnt this mean you cant play dvds anymore???

@brothertwinz You can always use the optical drive externally by installing it into an external enclosure like the OWC SuperSlim USB 2.0 Enclosure.

@drummerkid101 The 1TB Samsung Spinpoint M8 is a 9.5mm tall drive, so it will fit in either bay.

Hello I'm a little confused about this optical drive adapter.
I'm about buying the new macbook pro 2011 13", and I want to make sure that it will work if I follow this indications.
I also want to know if the ssd can work at the fastest speed of the ssd if it's plugged into this adapter.
I would thank you a lot if you can help me.
I also want to add 8 gb ram to the macbook pro.
Sorry about my english
