Only Rory could work the audience into a frenzy, with his incredible musical talent and charisma, with a beat-up guitar, blue jeans, and a plaid shirt, (his trademark).
Then, insisting only to play at modest venues, creating a rabid following, far eclipsing the Grateful Dead cultists, drawing from all over the globe, and selling well over 36 million albums.
The guy was a freakin' genius with a guitar in his hands..... I had the double LP of this when I was a younger man and burned the grooves off that sucker with my guitar in hand trying to figure out just how he did that shit. All these years later and I'm still tryin'......
help but feel this title is misleading, only in the sense that if you want to see killer improv from rory, just watch ANY solo from one of his live shows. fantastic player. I never switch rory off before the end of a song, its like someone pouring their heart out to you and telling them to shut up mid sentence. at 18 i'm too young to remember rory, but i still miss him. its sad that i never got to hear such great talent, and i never will.
He wasn't mindlessly running up and down scales unlike a lot of guitarists who get more acclaim than him. He heard every note in his head before he played it. What a fucking hero.
As somebody said this is ''walk on hot coals'' around the 6th minute mark or so (ie 2nd solo) this is a documentary video of it. The Madrid version of this song is pretty good too cept not great quality
lineup
Rory Gallagher-guitarist singer
Gerry McEvoy-Bassist (head bopper)
Rod De Ath- Drummer & supposedly a very good drummer at that
So great. Ireland was being overrun with awful wannabe Country and Western acts at that time. For many, Big Tom was about as heavy or deep as things got. Rory Gallagher blazed a trail straight though all that and he had the credentials to do it.
In Gerry McAvoy's book, it mentions that they all thought he died for a long time, then he turned up at Rory's funeral. He was in bad shape, barely any teeth, using a walking stick.
He fell running for a train and hit his head, and it left him in a bad way.
