The line, "You dirty rat!" was never said verbatim by James Cagney, although he did say something similar, "Mmm, that dirty, double-crossin' rat," in Blonde Crazy (1931).
In Angels With Dirty Faces (1938), another character playing a gangster shoots his girlfriend, while saying, "Take that, you dirty rat."
he never said u dirty rat in any of his gangster pictures...i know because im his no 1 fan thats my boy...my fav actor....i seen all of his movies..r.i.p rocky sullivan.....
Rocky did NOT die a Coward! You can see it in his eyes right before he enters the room. He gave in to Jerry's request so that he would not become a martyr to the gang who worshiped him. He was NO Coward!!
I saw this movie when I was 8 years old and I KNEW Rockie played the tough guy with Pat O'Brien, the priest, but at the last minute had a change of heart and pretended to beg for his life.
EVERYBODY knew that when watching the film unless they were retarded. Like you.
Great tribute and great music. I was just waiting to see the last scene where, the priest asks Rocky to look afraid to die so the Dead End Kids don´t follow his example, for me the best scene because it shows that even though he was tough he didn´t need to appear tough. It was overstated already. Great vid nevertheless!
I first saw 'Angels with dirty faces' when I was 7 years old, I have lost count the amount of times I have sat and watched this film since then. For me this is one of the greatest films of all times featuring THE GREATEST actor of all times, James Cagney.
I was lucky enough to see this movie in a real movie theatre when they were showing old movies. Cagney was magnetic and just dominated the screen. You can't really appreciate him on television.
No one else has ever come close to Cagney for screen presence. The camera loved him and his aura had you locked onto the screen from beginning to end.Cagney is probably responsible, single handedly, for luring countless millions around the world to the cinema and everyone who saw Cagney got more than their moneysworth of entertainment.
Cagney is one of the top 5 of all time. His oscar he won for Yankee Doodle Dandy showed he could be more than a mobster. My all time favorite gangster movie! Watch it at least once a week- love it. Cagney is phenomenal - best gangster to ever hit the screen. He will live on forever. Thanks for posting :)
In 1975 I drove 40 mmiles to see this movie during lunchbreak before the vcr, n i am reminded in this u tube,...why i did that. The song background would have been better with remember the times of your life.
That was deliberately done! He had to pretend to be a coward the priest his best friend asked him to ! IN order to prevent the kids on the streets from becoming like him
thaanks, music is not depressing, is perfectly choosen the soundtrack of 'Once upon a time in america, which this film has a lot to do, especially the story of the kids. Even you have make your own final for the film!! thanks :)

One of my favorite movies of all time. Way ahead of it's time. The baketball scene, and the final scene are superbly done. 5 Stars...

Good choice of film but the music isn't mixed very well with the dialogue. Its almost impossible to understand what the actors are saying.

Except for one thing.Cagney was better than all of them.Cagney was the greatest.Only the Sonny Corleone (James Caan) character approaches Cagney.

Could James Cagney possibly be more famous than Robert De Niro? or is that a stupid question?
