EEh Err WRONG! Irish dancing did not just GET really competitive. What happened was-sean-nos was the only kind of solo irish dancing prior to that. then what happened was a group called the gaeilic league came along and wanted to preserve the tradition so they started competitions. from this, an idealised way of dancing developed because people wanted to be the best and to win of course so they had to set some sort of guidelines to compare their dancing!

So what we've kind of ended up with (step-dancing) is like ballet is to contemporary dance: very strict and elegant. As is Irish Step-dancing to Sean-nós dancing!

FYI, Festival is an Irish dance organization, not a type of Irish dance. Feis is also a word commonly used for a competition. It also is not a type of Irish dance.
