Believe me, if Cowell could make more money from promoting a Dylan type artist than he could from a Kelly Clarkson type artist he would in a heartbeat. Money is the only language Cowell and people like him speak. Throw away pop culture has replaced religion as the opium of the masses.
It doesn't look encouraging, but hopefully, from the ashes will rise a new culture. It's like the creativity outlet has been removed. And this outcome seems almost planned. Your advice is perfectly correct. Do not support these totalitarian media sheep. Change the channel. Go retro. Take a different path. Be a light of change. Whatever you do, do not support these talentless idiots.
Just under the surface, most young people are aware that something is wrong. Go with it. The feeling is correct.
Man, this is so right on. There is so much shit in our culture when it comes to entertainment and its so much easier to make a buck then make good art. I see what you mean about film.
Yeah.
I love comics and cartoons, but shit, its so mass entertainment/mass culture bullshit.
Ha yea true. Im wasn't saying YOU personaly don't get out and do anything. I mean you have your music and i can see you love that and try to get it out there.
It's just that.. most people think one thing and do another.
true. but youtube isn't my whole life, but it is a part of my life. the spread of the ideas and the communication DOES change things. its not like youtube exists within a vacuum
You rock superfrodies. Great Rant. Join me in a musical revolution to bring back really good music back to America. Simon Cowell doesnt like Bob Dylan? Well Kelly Clarkson(Mrs. Ugly) cannot be compared to Aretha because Mrs.Franklins the real deal.
It's interesting how people are so apathetic and uncritical these days. I wonder what made it this way. Maybe there aren't as many obvious things to fight, so its more difficult to form any kind of counter culture?
i dont think ive ever told this to anyone on youtube, but you have just earned a massive amount of respect from me, mr. frodies. keep up the good logic and we won't have to perform castration on half of the US to stop them from spreading their worthless genes.
You present your opinion as if it's a fact. Something subjective cannot just be summed up like that. Do you think your opinion on subjective material somehow is more important than the opinion of those who do like Bob Dylan? And is thus authoritative?
I forgot to mention, that this is what makes art so wonderful. People express themselves in different ways and appreciate other peoples art in different ways. If we all liked the same shit, the same way, then life would really suck.
I envy the amount of reading you log in, Sir. And I must go along with the sentiment here regarding mainstream media and that silly TV show in particular.
Dylan is an artist with vision and an impressive catalogue.
Cowell is an arrogant snit with "product" in his hair.
Looks to me this Youtube thing is a major return to the oral tradition- the oldest form in the world. (Besides dance, but its almost impossible to discuss philosophy with dance!)
I'll put my balls on the chopping block and say.... "Don't let me down Youtube, look at my innocent plums, they deserve the future, not some harsh blade of shitness!" (I am drunk late at night, but what the hey..)
American life is supply and demand... look at our service economy. Pop music is what rules the day and Pop stars whether music or television (they are the same thing) are very much what run the world if you don't like it enjoy what you enjoy but don't shove your opinions down others throat unless you want them to shove their opinions down yours.
Cowell is an idiot whose primary job is to say stupid, "controversial" things in order to create buzz for his TV show. So your first mistake is to care what he has to say. Secondly, I think there's a lot more "good" art than there was 30+ years ago, simply because there is a lot more art, and a lot more ways to find it and enjoy it. Which is the good stuff? Whatever it is that you like. It all seems very simple to me...
I'm enjoying the Beethoven vs. Kelly Clarkson discussion so much that I had to throw my .02 in, even though I'm new here (through paperphoenix). The fact is, Beethoven was more of an artist because he was actually doing something with himself, delving into the music and theories behind it. In other words, it took brains, which a lot of Americans no longer appreciate. And although Kelly Clarkson sings some catchy tunes I'll listen to sometimes, she doesn't really say anything new or profound.
Simon Cowell and his show promote singers, not songwriters, and not musicians. Since Bob Dylan was/is such a lousy singer Cowell's statement makes perfect sense to me. The greatest songwriter in the world would lose miserably on American Idol if he couldn't sing, because the show is for identifying singing talent only.
dylan's voice sucks. american idol pretends to evaluate unknowns for 'talent'. i would go running at the sound of dylan's voice singing a crappy pop cover
Who determines good art? I like both kelly clarkson and bob dylan. Obviously, I wouldn't compare them because they are completely different artists, but my question to you is, who determines whether art is credible or not? There isn't and shouldn't be a standard for good music, because not all people have the same tastes. And Simon Cowell, although hyperbolic, is still entitled to his opinion, despite in the assholish way he presents it.
p.s. Kerouac owns. I just finished the Dharma Bums.
righto, people can like whatever they want, and should not be judged as a human being based on their musical choices. would you argue that beethoven is more of an artist than kelly clarkson? is so, why? if not, why?
Kelly Clarkson is because I prefer to listen to her. I won't deny the proficiency, skill, and innovation of beethoven though, I just don't feel the need to listen to him, just because he's regarded as a genius and I also don't feel the need to qualify him as a better artist.
And I've noticed that given my recent comments, I sound somewhat like a die-hard kelly Clarkson freak and I'd just like to clarify that I'm...not.
so what makes kelly clarkson a better artist is the fact that you like to listen to her more? By that rational, if you like to eat shit, then shit is therefore a much better food than say, apples? I simply wont go along with this, as i believe it is not founded on reality. Quality is reality, if you like eating shit, people will undoubtably question your sanity because your concepts of what is real are obviously skewed. same goes for art.
So, quality is determined by the masses? What is socially acceptable is suddenly what is right and what is good? Reality is based on your own judgement and if my reality includes a world in which kelly clarkson is a better artist, then so be it. Stop trying to make art about standards and try to understand it's all about the individul. And why do you care so much that YOUR reality of quality be consumed by the masses? cont'd
sure its up to the individual, and i am not at all about forcing my opinions down anyone's throat. I just believe that there are such things as objective standards. I also mention my reply to Gary's video the changes that must be made within the music industry - so we agree there for sure (FYI I am majoring in music business precisely so I CAN try to fix this problem.)
ive always hated simon, he's NOT an american and has no idea what made america great. Yeah thank you for calling Smon out on that crap remark. People are waking up finally. Simons arrogance will get him nowhere. He just wants to make money.
Music is more artisticly intact than film. The mass of tripe which comes out of Hollywood is pretty sickening. Also I wouldnt worry about what Simon Cowell thinks - hes just a judge on a reality show.
The government is behind all this. Dumbed down americans are alot easier to control. Making the citizens of the US give up their freedom is easier for them.
Man, you make me feel sooo guilty. Sometimes I'm a lazy consumer at times :). But you are right, something needs to be done, and film does seem to lead the way. On Cowell.... fuck him, as soon as Clarkson makes an album like "Blonde On Blonde", "Blood On The Tracks", or "Highway 61 Revisited", then his OPINION might count for something. I think he just made those comments to create controversy for his show. Controversy = ratings. Anyway, keep fighting the good fight.
I loved this blog, sf—it speaks to issues I would like to see addressed on YouTube. For starters, it is important to make the distinction between entertainment and art. With entertainment, the viewer is passive, and is taken out of life—"good" entertainment is an escape, a tranquilizer, or a stimulant. Art, in contrast, actively pulls the participant into life, engages the participant's mind, body, and soul, and is rarely if ever comfortable and reassuring.
Entertainment kills the soul; art feeds the soul. Entertainment maintains the status quo; art disrupts it. I agree, in today's world we must be rigorous gatekeepers regarding the media we consume if we want to be authentic and avoid being brainwashed, and, above all, we must READ. I relate deeply to your frustration with the current culture, and am preparing a video response that may further the conversation. As they say downunder, Goodonya, Mate.
You would be suprised by the connection a lot of the spiritual guru's were part of the "jack kerouac" group. Ram Dass, Tim Leary, Jerry Garcia, and the list goes on. Who knows who you might have been in a past life? I've got a feeling you were somebody very interesting ;)

Can we go back to modern day prague when bohemia began and change the world because our passion was enough to feed our starving selves??? oh God, what do we do.
Ultimately, I think this is down to the major record labels.. Exactly the same thing is happening in the game industry. You will find it very hard to get a publisher to fund your game unless it's similar to other successful games on the market. I think with music, record labels are just not taking risks, choosing their own greed over creativity.
you are 100% correct. This is what we must fix. I am getting into the music industry so that I can try to change the way it is currently being run. good comments
I completely agree.. when you think about it.. mainstream music has gotten progressively worse since classical, now something doesn't even have to have a tune to be classified music. Not saying I don't respect some of the old greats but in general music has gotten less and less creative. When you consider that in classical music it never had to follow a set verse chorus verse chorus... now almost everything does. And now, most pop music doesn't even have to be tunefully complex. 2 Chords will do
Believe me, if Cowell could make more money from promoting a Dylan type artist than he could from a Kelly Clarkson type artist he would in a heartbeat. Money is the only language Cowell and people like him speak. Throw away pop culture has replaced religion as the opium of the masses.
