@PseudonymPlayer it most definitely is. almost the whole soundtrack i reckon. good soundtrack but why not have the RCR music in the background instead?
if you want an RCR movie, watch the WARRIORS. They go from one side of town to the other, fighting their way through different gangs in each neighbourhood. Every side scrolling beat em up is a rip off of The Warriors movie.
The best thing with this game was the team attack. It just made it so fucking funny. Me and my friend would be beating eachother up instead of the enemies, just for lulz. Also, before we realised you could double tap left or right to run, we'd just randomly run of in some direction, and then piss ourselves laughing, because the running sprites looked so stupid.
old fashion Nintendo Lag.The only Lag that really can't get you killed in my opinion. When the game slowed you had extra time to make miracles happen!
Sorry, man, but the truth is, this game got almost no marketing, and, in an era when the internet wasn't invented yet, there wasn't much way for word to spread far and wide.
This game brings back memories, I remember how me and my brother used to play this all the time. Sometimes after we cleared a map, we would have fights against each other because you could still hurt eachother. I haven't seen my brother in a while, maybe i'll buy this game and we can play it again like we used to when we were little. :)
Great job. I bought this game from a rental store when I was 10 years old. I knew it was a overlooked gem after playing it for 10 mins. I'm happy it came with the original box and manual, since this game is pretty rare these days. I never got slow down on my system until the end stages.

Everything has "RPG elements." What a vague description. It's almost as if a game has ANY depth or development of character or statistic it's considered to have "RPG elements." Ugh.
Ah yes i rember seing this in a nintendo magazine and wanted to get it, but sadly it was a rental only and thoes was werry hard to get, thoe i se it was part in same series with Nintendo World Cup with is hillarius soccer game, its supose to be a clena sport but when you barly get any yellow or red card you mostly start run of and start use them as the soccer ball.
@sannyf2000 Dude, I played the shit outta thi a a kid. Still my faorite- nothing, not Final Fantasy games, Dragon Quest games, GUN, Mario series- NOTHING beats RCR!
Well I do have to admit, your review was excellent and well written, I'd just like to point out a few things you should know about.
Ryan is the second player because the original series this game is from in Japan is the Kunio Kun series. Alex is actually Kunio, the main character of the series, and Ryan is Riki, Kunio's friend. Since Kunio is the main character of the series, Kunio is respectively the main character.
In America, this game is little known to people. But in Japan, this game (Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari) is the first few words uttered by babies. In fact, the whole series is the shit over there.
I've wanted to say this for a while, but I think you could have made a much better pun naming your show. I mean really..."Still Gaming"? In "still" pictures, and it's a show about "gaming"? it's a horrible pun. However, I still think it's a good show, and I respect you.
dude the sauna scene in these game was a little weird. seeing Alex or Ryan naked in the shower was to much...why not eat pancakes or waffles instead no need for full frontal. But overall GREAT REVIEW i love how you can kick the shit out of bosses while there talking
From what I've read, the first Double Dragon was also suppose to be apart of the Kunio-kun series but Technos made an original series out of it. Another game that is also apart of the Kunio-kun series is Renegade for the NES, which is actually the very first Kunio-kun game.
I remember trying to rent it as a kid, but apparently I was "too young" to rent it so I had to ask my older brother to rent it for me after I had left the videogame store.
He's not being negative, he's saying that if a game is unique or original then nobody will buy it because people like to play things that are shit, basically.
so if i showed you a game that was 3d, had 3000 moves, a huge story, was funny and had more originality than Hollywood could wish for.. youd still think RiverCR was better?

Believe it or not, This game was released as a sick twisted version called "pussy" where all the guys' dicks were coming out and things. Nasty but true.
Great review, although the nes was huge in the usa and japan, it took ages to come out here in the uk, when it did it was not very popular, when i had mine, there were very few games avialable.

I just bought River City Ransom yesterday (on VC), and at first I was sort of dissapointed and only played it for about 10 minutes.
Today I played it and after getting more into, I played non-stop for 4 hours... Its a really fun game and the most addicting NES game I've played so far.
glad they finally put this on Wii's Virtual Console... this game was my favorite game on NES and I still play it every now and then. I tried getting all my friends into it, but nobody ever liked it as much as me. Suckers

Allll riiight, bought the VC and beat it multiple times in one sitting, this is so addicting.
As a kid I didn't play this, but I had some "Kunio-Kun" thingy games, one I remember is Nintendo World Cup. Man I loved that, I was so good at it. It's cool how you can change the field to ice to make it slippery, for example. Pretty innovative back then.
I loved that "It's over! I have the higher ground" bit. It reminded me of that excellent Star Wars comic at VG Cats with Obi-Wan saying "It's over Anakin! This high ground adds +5 to my Agility!" (which granted him an annoyed "Hax!" scream from Anny).

Ah man this review kicked ass good job Lee I am gonna try to get the River City Rumble movie. WOOHOO Its on VC now that's great to hear anyways great vide Lee
Yeah, awesome game indeed. I didn't like the GBA remake though. It felt rather like it was rushed and broken. There was no two player mode either...just an AI partner that would hit you accidently all the time...
You absolutely should check out the rest of the Nekketsu Kunio-kun beat em up games. Great co-op games and definitely one of the best titles of the genre back in the day. Shoudai Nekketsu Kunio on the SNES has a less cartoony look, but revisits a lot of the RPG elements of the 'original' Kunio-kun game (River City Ransom).
Loved the Psychonauts poster :D One of my favorite games...totally underrated

5.make everything you want into that game.......
i don't know why people hate the game?

I think its the first time you see man butt in a game . . .or at least the first shower scene.
thegaminggoose 3 years ago
Games definitely need more man butt.

I'm liking what I've played on the VC version so far. Challenging and really deep. It's a great game, but kinda confusing.

Hi. I'm much more ill than I was last year, but the show must go on.

You still seem as good as last year before it got worse though.

That's tight that you're back to reviewing man! Glad to see you're OK now after that long time being ill.

Yeah, awesome game indeed. I didn't like the GBA remake though. It felt rather like it was rushed and broken. There was no two player mode either...just an AI partner that would hit you accidently all the time...
Good review. Glad to see you again. ;)
