Awesome video! I love watching these kind of vids :) I hope I'll get some footage of Dutch summerstorms soon! I kind of laughed at 03:22 though. Didn't expect someone to start talking
I was there when that happened. I was a dishwahser at Caktus Jacks and we closed early, and did I go home? NO way i tried goin north into it but the rain was to thick and I couldn't see so I drove around and then went to a friends house to try to follow it but it already had dissipated. Bummer. But I knew nothing was goin to happen. I lived in the panhandle a long time. Watching the radar on the news I said to myself, it's goin to be gone by it hits the edge of town. Nickle sized hail I think.
that's just really risky... well, i am glad you lot were fine in the end of this clip. wow, awesome stuff. i hardly have any idea how tornadoes do and all but i can see that it's really destructive... wow... kinda scared at the lightning part, they are all instable.
Prairie fire from 7:20 to about 7:43. I saw a prairie fire started by a supercell's lightning bolt on Highway 200, Dunn County, western North Dakota August 2003. Several acres of grassland were burned off before a heavy heavy downpour put the fire out.
I can answer at least part of your question: The folks who are posting these videos are from Europe. Unlike in America where, in the present day, you are lucky if you're given any vacation time at all (let alone paid vacation time), in Europe people are generally given a month or more of paid vacation time each year. It's called being civilized; something that Americans are not.
(Profits, son, profits. And not your profits either.)
Well, OK: You're civilized. Most American businesses are run in an uncivilized manner. Let's put it that way, OK? Wouldn't you like to have a month off paid vacation? Sure! Everyone would! However, in America people are worked to death until they are burned out. Funny thing, productivity for European businesses is frequently higher than American businesses. Some economists attribute this to the more humane social institutions Europeans enjoy. Cheers!
That month or so off that Europeans enjoy, allows them to actually enjoy life while they are physically and mentally at their peak. In America, what do we get? We work and dream of enjoying a retirement; retirement at a time of life when most of us are in no shape to really enjoy life! Ask the average American CEO if his workers should actually enjoy life while they can, and you'll probably get a look that tells you you are speaking like an insane person.
Is that really true about America? I don't work yet, but my sister gets 6 weeks paid annual leave, plus 7 public holidays a year, and thats normal here. I think you have to get 2 days per month paid leave by law. I find it hard to believe a country like the USA doesen't have basic employment laws like that. Really?
Well mike, in what country does your sister work? There are paid holidays for some, perhaps most, Americans, but 6 weeks of paid "annual leave" (called "vacation" in the U.S.) is EXTREMELY rare, if in fact, it exists at all. I can't recall anyone I've known who has EVER had 6 weeks vacation time. Certainly not an employee. I've heard of 3 week vacations, but that is EXTREMLY rare. Usually, with a GOOD company, two weeks is tops; sometimes only 1.
We live in Ireland. I don't understand how americans put up with that. It seems victorian to me. Don't you have trade unions. Do you even have a 39 hour week or maternity leave? Women get 3 months paid maternity leave by law here. You guys need to wise up!
mike: Many companies allow maternity leave now, but that is a relatively recent policy development (within last 10-15 years). The 40 hour work week has been standard for many decades now, that is true. For an hourly wage worker, most companies pay 1.5X the hourly wage for each hour worked over 40 hrs in a week, & yes, America does have trade unions but, since the 1980s Reagan administration, unions have become less & less powerful, while employers have been allowed all sorts of benefits.
I work at a weather office in Switzland as a software developer. I'm not rich at all. Luckily watching the sky is still tax free :-)
However, flights are expensive, gas price and motel rates climbed a lot. I would love to go to the US for storm chasing next year and also observing the total solar eclipse 2008 in Siberia, but it will be a hard time for me to put all the money aside for these trips.
And yes, I have about 4 weeks paid vacation time a year. That's common in Europe.

Yeah, I'll drink to that for sure. In America, people work their asses off and get like a week or two vacation per year.. it sucks I know.

mike: The laws in America favor employers over employees, & the favor has tipped toward employers ever more over the past twenty years.
