Thank you do much for these videos you put up on YouTube. I find them extremely helpful and I am going to follow your instructions. I recommend all snowboarding beginners to watch your videos.
the only problem is that it's not as easy when you do it yourself alone, trying to mimic a video. I recommend having an instructor or friend as well, so they can teach you based on your own movements and correct mistakes.
The problem I have with this clip is that he never mentions this critical point - slow all the way down to complete control BEFORE you attempt to make a new turn. He also uses a lot of very advanced movements which include rotation of the upper body and tortional flexing of the board. When he changes edges he jumps a little. Not exactly what a beginner should do.
Today, I linked one set of turns. I think it's not so much a skill thing, but rather that as you're picking up speed and starting to try to think about which toe to lift, which heel to compress, which edge is cutting . . . you get the idea. I just need to practice so that there is less thinking, and it's natural. Great instruction. You are a good teacher.
great videos, i can't stress how useful the advice regarding using both toe and heel edge is in terms of improving your skills. i found that i was reasonably competent on heel edge but getting stuck progressing because i was uncomfortable on toe. i spent a little time focussing on getting the toe edge thing sorted and everything else stepped up a gear.
Hey there... thank you for the great advice... i am off snowboarding in Vienna tomorrow... not sure if i will be ready for linked turns but i will give it ago... Your advice has been very helpful and as given me a bit of confidence.!!! THANK YOU :-) Soph
wow great instructions, so clear (even though the wind)... will finally get over the fear of having the board flat on the snow, enxiety that i will catch an edge and land on my back (head facing down hill). been reading and found that snowboarding is opposite of skiing, you want to stay on one edge (previous skier becoming boarder)
@HeadShot360IN Same here im a previous skier of 7 years and when i tried snowboarding i loved it! however im used to the stability of the skiis on turns, so when i try to go toeside i fall because i dont have enough speed. I wish i hadn't skied b4 i snowboarded because im afraid to go fast because i dont feel as stable as i did on skiis. If anyone else reads this, if u have any tips i would gladly appreciate it. Great Teacher by the way Expert Village sucks.
Great video series! I'm not watching it because i don't know how to snowboard, but because i don't know how to teach this stuff. I'm going to be teaching one of my friends how to snowboard and this will make our lives so much easier thanks so much!
1st time i tryed S turn i shited my pats and hit ma head on some isce falling on my back cuz i dint know the toe side shit i only learned heal side was my 1st time ... :P ama try ur tips tomorow and tell u how i did :P
To jonnysophie2011: I first tried riding last winter at age 45. Skied when I was a little kid; so long ago I didn't have any more physical memory. Only related experience is windsurfing, which I'm not an expert at. I fell plenty, but also had some great runs. Take a lesson or two, and at 22, you'll be just fine.
Loved your vids...really put the mechanics of turning into perspective. Just one "pointer" if you will, a thing I found especially usefull when learning how to board: we called it "stair gliding", basically gliding on one edge of the board, without going either direction (left-right), just downward and leaving behind a sort of stair-shape in the snow. Works great (or did for me) to learn how to brake. Made both toe- and heel-side. Would be good exercise for beginners. Vids great anyway.
These videos are brill! Thanks for taking the time to make them. I'm 22 and haven't ever been skiing or snowboarding, but am going to be going on holiday in a year or so to skii. But I can't decide which is best to learn, skiing or snowboarding. Because I just love the look of snowboarding. Do you think it's too late for me to learn either at any good level? My fiance skiis, so I wanna make it a habit to learn. Thanks again x
@jonnysophie2011 If you want to take my advice: It's not too late, and it never is. Just go for it and if you can stand the possible bruises of the first couple of days and get through it you'll find it is worth it. I love snowboarding although I am not extremely good at it, but I manage. And I also would not change it for the world
I used to skateboard for a few years and could do basic skating skills and a few tricks. I could ride up/down ramps and down the street comfortably but my feet were not strapped to the bored (snowboard might be a weird feeling to me). I also tried surfing and got up my first try and it came really easy to me. Should snowboarding be very similar to both skateboarding and surfing?
@MooreProductionsMP3 it is different but you will benefit a lot from other boarding experience. I also did some skating and tried out surfing, when i strapped on my snowboard it went much smoother than i had expected. Because you already have the feeling of standing on a board, balancing out and have a much better control. Just try it out im sure you wont regret it
if u guys are going snowboarding for the first time, the only things u really need to know it how to turn and stop. I went not knowing a single thing and i did allright
Thanks for the videos! I'll be making my first trip out in the next week, so I was looking for something to help out. It terrifies me!!! Haven't ever been on a snowboard or ski's (sp). So wish me luck!!
I went to Crystal Mountain in Michigan and I went to turn going down canyon which is very fast and my board caught and I flew forward and sprained both wrists. I hope next time will go better thanks to these videos.
This is great...taking some lessons now, but they are group lessons...so it isn't TOO much help..just helps to know how to learn more than teaching how to. For some reason I fall when I try to link my turns...and I was told to get more edge...I guess that means for the turn to be established some more....this is more when I am going heel to toe.
To ufp1710: Your snowboard lessons are great! I've mastered getting off the chairlift because of your video and now I just have to figure out my toe-sided turns. Thanks again! Joanna
the person tht taught me didnt know shit he basically didnt even bother to talk u make sooo much more sence but i should have watched these a long time ago i fell so much on my first few days lol but it was worth it :)
Is it hard to learn??? I will try it for the first time this weekend and i watched these videos thinking that it will help me, they seem very good at good explanation too. Did u guys had a hard time on your first time?
I am going to snowboard tomorrow fourth time. Last time, I had really hard time on a steep hill. Heel side turn is always pain for me I hope it gets better now.
Hey guy thanks for all the lessons, I'm going to be snowboarding tomorrow for the first time, hopfully i wont embarrass myself too much after watching all these videos.
very helpful videos man!! thank you very much, not like that videos from expertSHITvillage where they try to teach snowboarding in a minute. Waiting for more from you man ! :)
nice vids, i want to start snowboarding but i live in like ohio, all we got is some fake snow, exept around this time, well sort of. guess i can still take trips to colorado and new york though
great tutorial! I was "snowboarding" last year for the first time and to be honest I had no idea what I was doin' :P I did everything on a so called "feeling" and it was ok, but now, after I saw these movie parts I think it would be a way easier to make turns (that's the biggest problem for me atm). Thanks a lot buddie, and I agree with doilooklikeaslutt (cool nickname btw) - it is the best tutorial with first steps on snowboarding up here.
these tipps were the same as what my instructor told me to do on my heel to toe and toe to heel turns, ithink its called pedalling when you use the torsional flex of your board to turn.
hey im a beginner and i was wondering, whats the best angles for my bindings to do these linked turns??? i ride regular with my bindings all the way wide. i ride a 163 wide too if that helps
thanks for the awesome videos i have only been out there once now and i can barely sit in this chair my ass hurts so bad im lucky i found these! my girl has been doing it for a while and she told me to steer with my back foot lol im going back out today and i don't think i can handle anymore icy run falls so hopefully your vids help
when u do a J turn only the leading leg rises/get down than u start turn the direction u go than the other leg follows it and starts rises/get down with the leading leg till u stop?
That would have been quite helpful when I started.....saved me from all that payne.
It's vital to have a professional teaching u the basics. I ditn't have one and now I'm haveing some balance problems....keeping pretty much all of the weight on the back foot.
I did start to hit and land 1-2m jumps at day one but now i have some trouble handling my board at high speeds.
I want to thank you very much for your series of videos. I have been studying them prior to my first trip into the snow. I decided to go with snowboarding from advice from my friends, but downloaded your videos to my ipod and studied every word you said. I went up to Steamboat on this past Wed. I had set up for snowboard lessons, but got there a little early.
I tried to make a pass down a small green, and I did the lift PERFECTLY, but the rest of the mountain was hideous, and I fell a good 15 times and hurt my butt pretty good. I started with the lessons as soon as I got to the base, and got the feedback I needed for what I was doing. I made that same hill a few more times that day and got a little better, but couldnt go on my toe edge.
I went back to the hotel that night, and watched your videos again. I watched number 4 and dynamic turns about 20 times. Well, day 2 on the snowboard I was able to go on my toe edge and occasionally link a turn. I was pumped and started having the time of my life. I ended up going up higher(sticking with greens) later that day.
Day 3 brought icy trails in the morning and I got discouraged after banging my hips and shoulders up pretty good. Went back to the smaller hill and worked on linking my turns and picking a spot or tree where I would turn. I made 5 back to back runs without falling and linked ALL of my turns. I went up way high and did a very long trail with linked turns(had a few falls), and made a back to back run again before the lift closed.
Way to go! The first 2 or 3 days snowboarding is hell for most people. If a person can tough it out past this point, they usually start having fun and progressing well. Glad you found these tips helpfull!
Great video, ive been struggling with my toe to heal for over a week, your tip to use your head and shoulders to point where you want the board to go is where im going wrong, I'm looking and have my shoulders shaped as if im gonna go back on to toe edge so the board wont come round.
I'll try this on saturday and hopefully start to link turns by the end of the session.
Thanks for the videos man! I paid for some lessons before and the instructor SUCKED. You've really helped! I just started 5 weeks ago, and going for my 5th weekend straight!
So when doing any kind of turn, let it be toeside or heelside, you basically use your front foot to start of the move and then once it is underway you finish off with the same movement with your back foot?
Second, when turning, should the weight be more-so centered or more towards your front foot thats turning?
In most cases, you will initiate your turns with the front foot. There are a few exceptions when you will use tilt by shifting your weight edge to edge; then both feet work almost at the same instant...but that is a more advanced riding technique after a person masters basic skidded turns.
Generally you want your weight centered between your bindings. A slight forward shift is helpfull to get the turn initiated; just don`t overdo weight shifts.
Thank you do much for these videos you put up on YouTube. I find them extremely helpful and I am going to follow your instructions. I recommend all snowboarding beginners to watch your videos.
