Rack gear to controls stomp boxes is moronic. You go to rack gear to graduate from the expensive, tone-sucking stupidity of of stomp boxes.

All the stuff he is doing with the video can be done with a MIDI foot controller (second hand for less than $100), a MIDI-controlled preamp and a MIDI-controlled effects processor.
Oh yeah, and you can't control the parameters of the stomp boxes; just cut them in or out. For instance a preamp-type stomp box may have gain, drive and tone knobs, but you can't program these with a MIDI switcher; just cut the pedal in or out of the chain. With a MIDI preamp, you can program, as part of a numbered preset, all of the parameters that would be manual knobs on a non-MIDI stomp box. A given preset controls your voicing, gains, EQ, what effects are on and their settings, etc.
@KazKylheku Rack gear is also just a bunch of f/x in one unit, and not always with the choice of f/x one may want. They are generally digital also, which sucks if you want analog stuff in there. w/ the ground control, you customize the f/x of your choice. The ground control just controls them based on your programming. Some rack f/x have one or two great f/x and with the other f/x on it being useless.
The Ground Control has 2 outputs on the front: can I put, for example, a Wah and a tuner on 1 and 2 by using a y-cable? And how is it routed on the ground control, is it on 1 and 2, or can I program it differently?+

do you think this is better than the voodoo lab commander and pedal switch system? I want to buy one, but don't know which...seem more limited with this, than the commander, but don't know if commander will change amp channels. Any thoughts?
Hi! I badly need help with my rig. Especially with the wiring. Thank you!
Hey there. i have a question .. I was wondering if the ground control can hook up to a tc electronics gmajor. i use my g major to change my channels on my bogner uberschall and i also use pedals. is it possible to have all this hooked up??
how do you set this up with a mesa boogie high gain amp switcher
(if you have ever heard of a mesa amp switcher) you can switch up to 4 amps and i have i amp 3 preamps and power amps and because there 4 amps would that be 4 loops? i know this is confusing
I consider on buying an audio switcher but I cant make my mind between the new rocktron patchmate 8, or this Voodoo Lab GCX, can anyone recommend me something? I using a DOD G7 for disto and TC Elctronics G Major for FX, I split the signal with a Motley 3 way splitter, and send it to a 3 full stacks each with a marhall 1987 50 watts plexi, I like to expand my possibilities in sound, so I like to try new stomp boxes and that's why I like to add a switcher. Check my video there you can see gear
Is there ever a point in time in this process when the signal itself from the guitar all the way to the amp is converted from analog to digital or are only the commands purely digital, leaving the switching analog? I'm looking at getting something like this but I don't want my signal to ever convert to 1s and 0s and back to analog.
if you wanted to put a wah pedal on your pedalboard infront of the switcher, would you have to have a cable run from the guitar into the wah, all the way to the switcher? or is there a way to plug it into an input on the controller, so that you dont need to run a long cable to the rack.
I'm sorry but i'm new to MIDI and all this stuff so does your amp have to be MIDI capable to be able to use the ground control or any footswitch of the like to give you the ability to set up different patches and EQ sounds?
So can I use this to control my pedalboard via the GCX and also control my rack mounted effects (Alesis Midiverb and Line 6 Echo Pro) and the reverb/channels on my amp (Orange Thunderverb 200)?
haha! Rectom lol. You can hook up to 2 gcx devices to one ground control pro right? I also use a Marshall JVM 410. It has midi in and out. Am I able to use the Ground Control to switch through all 3 gain stages on each of my 4 channels? The JVM is a 4 channel head and each channel has 3 gain stages. Anywhoo, thanks in advance. Nice video!
The triple rectifier has parallel loops. I know that when you're running effects processors like the g force or g system, it makes modulation effects sound like crap.
Does the gcx audio switcher work better with series fx loops?
(see previous post) So, I've been checking out this voodoo labs rig, and here are my questions:
1) Most important - since I have way more than 8 pedals and amps, can I use the ground control for multiple gcxs WITH the ability to have presets that turn on select loops from each gcx simultaneusly? For example, if i have 4 gcxs, can I create a hard rock rhythm setting that will use loops 2 and 5 from the first gcx, loop 3 from the 2nd, and loops 2 and 3 from the third?
1) yes you can. you just go through the menu on the ground control, and on patch tell each gcx what loop to be on. so you can have number 1, and tell gcx 1 to have loop 1,3 and 5, gcx 2 to have loops 4,6 and 7 etc etc

Hey, first thanks so much for the video and offering up your expertise on the subject, much appreciated.
Okay here's my situation: I have a hell of a lot of pedals, and I was thinking about acquiring a 3 board setup (1 for compressors/wah/envolope, 1 for preamp/fuzz/distortion/overdrive/boost, and 1 for volume/wah(post-distortion)/flanger/phaser/uni-vibe/delay) but I'm now coming to realize that it's going to create a huge barrier around me that will crowd up most stages. (see next post)
I have a Peavey Rockmaster Preamp. Which has a 2 button footswitch. I also have a TC Electronics G-Sharp for my effects. Id like to be able to switch from dirty channel to clean and vice versa without having to hit my Midi controller ( Rocktrom MidiMate) and the Peavey footswitch, in 2 steps. Will the GXC help me do this using just the MidiMate controller I have?
@touchmywealth use the loops and the inserts in between the loops. if you have loop 1 and 2, you have an insert into loop 1, then the loop send and return, then out from the loop, then in to loop 2. so the in and out between the loops are not effected by the switching. so basically you would for instance have guitar going into the insert, then loop 1 send and return would go to a pedal, then the out after the loop would go to the amp input. the fx loop send from the amp would go to the ....
@agitatedbells input of loop 2, and the send and return of loop 2 would go to the next pedal (delay for instance) and then the send from after that loop the fx loop return. so the 2 pedals would be effected by loop changes but the amp stays running. anything in between the send and return od the amp would be in the fx loop like delays. you can also then have other loops controlling amp channel changes. i have a 6505 controlled by a gcx, with OD, phaser, , NS, delay and a microamp in the loops...
@agitatedbells ... as well as a rack wah and a fx processor in between the loops. the fx processor midi changing is controlled by the GCX too and it all runs like a charm. best thing i ever bought, its a hell of an investment but well worth it, i have mulitple pedals, and fx patches on the fx processor as well as the amp channels and its all controlled by the push of 1 button.
I wanna buy a ground control pro and use it only to switch between my pedals. The idea is to switch on some pedals with one stomp. Can the ground control do that? or do i have to buy the audio switcher too?

Being relatively new to this midi switching stuff I'm failing to picture all the signal routing in my head. Is it possible to have some stomp boxes in front of the amp, and some in the loop and use the 8 loops via GCX control all of them? Also, if you have a multieffect processor, could the ground control dictate which preset to use on it? (Alesis quadraverb)
You can buy them online too, I THINK its flight case warehouse but not sure, just google "CAR-1 Flightcase" - if you buy new you can choose how many rack units, and if you want it for 1 head or two. Its not cheap though....
I wanna thank you for this review. I was looking at the same control system for a Mesa RK 2. This answered alot of questions for me. I have more though because I wanna use a gmajor2. Let this switch my amp and effects patches in one move. Just like you are doing here, but with a rack midi. Thanks for getting me started. Now I'm looking for a review just like this only with midi. Thank you.
Do you know how can i set up: 6 stomp boxes to work as an on/off system. And in the channel 7... control the sansamp psa.1.1 and use the bak up and down to scroll the sansamp presets? thanks for the attention
Great way to learn about the ground control. I have a Marshall JVM. Each channel has 3 different gain settings. The footswitch that came with the JVM works so that you can cycle through each of the three gain levels by tapping the respective channel button. Can I make one of the Ground Control switches act in a similar way? This seems like a kick ass product. I have 8 effects in my effects loop and therefore tap dancing. I need one of these things pretty bad. :)
thanks for the review, i was actually gonna call voodoo labs tomorrow but you answered almost every question i had. Though you may be able to answer this. in your system you were using bank method with stomp ox control. Now what if i wanted to use those top 8 bottoms to select several of the pedal in the gcx rather then having a setting then being able to take out or put in individual effects. So to clarify can you use the top 8 buttons act the way you use the bottom 4 bank buttons?
There's only one thing that's annoying though. Am I right in saying that there's only 3 different presets, but you can change banks to get another 3 etc. ?
Since most people only have about 12 or so tones, wouldn't it have made sense if they'd have made it so that all 12 buttons changed patch, but then there was another one to edit each patch? Just annoying if you were in a song with more than 3 patches, thats all. Or maybe an up/down patch button?
umm a few questions... can you put and control the delay, reverb etc.... in the fx loop and at the same time having distortion pedals before the preamp section...and turn them on and off? because delay und reverb sound better in in the fx loop most of the time... 2. is it possible to control the brain gcx (in the rack) and a midi amp (like the ENGL invader) (with midi controlable voicing, channel and other switches) at the same time with a push of a button...
Hey, the loops that u use to do the amp switching ( with the ext switching jacks on the back of the Rectifier), do u use latching or momentary for them? Its bugging the hell out of me which one to use.
Hey mizike.. nice vid. Very helpful. If I may ask! Where did you get that very nice rack that has your mesa head in ..in particular, where did you get that nice tray that carries your pedals...did it come with the rack case? Thanks!
Hey Mike, I have another question about the ground control. How do you power it and how you power your wah pedal also. Because you can power the ground control by a midi cable but I don't see how you power you wah pedal?
i have a fender twin amp. 100 watts all tubed and i have a mesa/boogie studio preamp plugged into it . how could i go about using the mesa's distortion and the fender cleans do i have to by the audio switcher?
I have two questions about the Ground Control Pro. I hope you can answer them. First, can you set the instant access switches to be different depending on what preset you have up? Second, can you make a preset that leaves some loops completely alone (on or off as they were before you hit the preset) or does every preset have to define on/off for every GCX loop? Thanks man, and keep up the good work!
for #1, when u change presets, ur changing the instant access loops. For each preset, u can assign different loops u want for that preset, so if u wanted loops 2,3, and 6 to come on in a preset, u would edit that preset and push the instant access buttons for those loops and then save that preset for those loops to come on. For 2, yes. Each preset has whatever loops u want in it. So if preset 1 calls up loops 2,3, and 6, it brings them up. all other loops wont. So each preset will only call up
I must not have been clear. For question 1 what I was asking is whether I can make instant access button #1 change its function based on which preset is selected. For example, can preset 1 have button 1 change GCX loop 1 while preset 2 has button 1 change GCX loop 2 instead?
U can but I would look at the GCX Audio Switcher's Manual on the website of the GCX to find out more about it. Usually u would use instant access button 2 to control that loop instead of button 1
I've read the GCX and GCP manuals about 10 times each. You can set any instant access button to any GCX loop you want. But can you have a different button->loop mapping for each preset or is it just one mapping for the whole rig?
Sorry. Read the full exchange between canadaboy23 and me yesterday - it seems that there is no clear, direct way of asking it. But he did come up with an answer, which is no you can't do what I want with the GCP. :-\
do i need the audio switcher ? why do you have that box with the slide thing for your pedals to sit on cause i have a fender twin amp 100 watts all tube will the ground control pro and audio switcher work with my amp
For q.#2, what I want to know is whether a preset can leave a loop alone. E.g., if I go to preset 1, then turn on loop 1 with an instant access switch, then go to preset 2, then back to preset 1, can loop 1 be left on by preset 2 and preset 1 so it's still on when I go back? Say preset 1 goes to my clean amp and loop 1 is my chorus pedal, and preset 2 goes to my dirty amp with loop 1 not involved in the signal chain, I want the chorus to be left alone when I change presets. Is that possible?
yes because preset 1 controls the instant access loops u pick for it. So if u had preset 1 choose ur clean amp and chorus pedal, then go to preset 2 with ur dirty amp, it would only pick the dirty amp. then when u go back to preset 1, ur clean amp and chorus pedal will come back, no dirty amp. if u need more help let me know
The thing is that I don't want my chorus pedal on preset 1. I want the chorus pedal to be on instant access only and never turned on *or* off by any preset, but always left where I set it last. Does that make sense? I know this isn't what most people do but I'm not most people. Thanks for the info so far. :)
ok so u want to use it more like on a pedalboard. What u can do is have preset 1 for ur clean amp and whatever else u want for it, but dont pick the loop with the chorus pedal in that preset. So when u pick preset 1, it will bring up ur clean amp, but not the chorus pedal. Then u can turn the chorus pedal on/off as u want, and when u go to another preset, as long as u dont pick that loop for it, it wont be turned on
That's really close to answering my question. :) What I want to know is if the chorus will be left on when I go back to preset 1 later. For example, say I'm playing on a clean chorus setting (preset 1 plus the chorus loop engaged, which is not part of preset 1 but only on an instant access button). Then I play a lead on preset 2. When I hit preset 1 again, will the chorus loop still be engaged or will I have to re-engage it manually?
Thanks. That answers my question at last. Nobody else I asked seemed to know (and they all took a day to figure out what I was even asking - I should practice the question better!)
Hey man great video you have here. I am considering purchasing this pair because it seems to make everything incredibly easy and simple. However, I wouldn't just want to use it for stompboxes. I would want to use it with my TC Electronics G-major as well. Could I set it up so that I can use presets on the G-major while using stompboxes? For example... if I wanted something like channel 2, Wylde overdrive pedal and preset 18 on the g-major as an option on the pedal. Please let me know
men i got my gcx audio switcher and the ground control!c ,i bought a voodoo pedal switcher but i dont know how to connect it to use it like a gcx 2...Do i have to plug the midi out of the ground control to the midi in of the pedal switcher and them to the pedal in of the gcx?? thanks for all the help.
hey man great demo helped alot. my question is "does the amp have to be midi capable for you to change the channels with the ground control?" I was looking at getting the mark V cause it sounded freaking amazing but also wanted to get into rackmount stuff and work on cleaning up my signal with the gcx.
is there a cheap alternative to this? and can u plug this in to a porcessor that has a footswitch input without getting the gcx audio switcher? i can't afford both...
I see you have both rack w/head setup and rack separate from head. I was thinking of doing a rig like the one you have with both the head and rack in one case, but is it practical with the weight? Advantages/disadvantages? Gracias

Is there ever a point in time in this process when the signal itself from the guitar all the way to the amp is converted from analog to digital or are only the commands purely digital, leaving the switching analog? I'm looking at getting something like this but I don't want my signal to ever convert to 1s and 0s and back to analog.

@Tsuntin only if you have a digital effect within one of your loops, its ALL analogue.

if you wanted to put a wah pedal on your pedalboard infront of the switcher, would you have to have a cable run from the guitar into the wah, all the way to the switcher? or is there a way to plug it into an input on the controller, so that you dont need to run a long cable to the rack.

I'm sorry but i'm new to MIDI and all this stuff so does your amp have to be MIDI capable to be able to use the ground control or any footswitch of the like to give you the ability to set up different patches and EQ sounds?

(see previous post) So, I've been checking out this voodoo labs rig, and here are my questions:
1) Most important - since I have way more than 8 pedals and amps, can I use the ground control for multiple gcxs WITH the ability to have presets that turn on select loops from each gcx simultaneusly? For example, if i have 4 gcxs, can I create a hard rock rhythm setting that will use loops 2 and 5 from the first gcx, loop 3 from the 2nd, and loops 2 and 3 from the third?
zsdubya1 1 year ago
@zsdubya1

Will the GXC help me do this using just the MidiMate controller I have?

touchmywealth 1 year ago
@touchmywealth please elaborate. . . .mount the amp in the rack?, or hook it up to the GCX?
xlMooCowlx 1 year ago
@touchmywealth use the loops and the inserts in between the loops. if you have loop 1 and 2, you have an insert into loop 1, then the loop send and return, then out from the loop, then in to loop 2. so the in and out between the loops are not effected by the switching. so basically you would for instance have guitar going into the insert, then loop 1 send and return would go to a pedal, then the out after the loop would go to the amp input. the fx loop send from the amp would go to the ....
agitatedbells 1 year ago
@agitatedbells input of loop 2, and the send and return of loop 2 would go to the next pedal (delay for instance) and then the send from after that loop the fx loop return. so the 2 pedals would be effected by loop changes but the amp stays running. anything in between the send and return od the amp would be in the fx loop like delays. you can also then have other loops controlling amp channel changes. i have a 6505 controlled by a gcx, with OD, phaser, , NS, delay and a microamp in the loops...
agitatedbells 1 year ago
@agitatedbells ... as well as a rack wah and a fx processor in between the loops. the fx processor midi changing is controlled by the GCX too and it all runs like a charm. best thing i ever bought, its a hell of an investment but well worth it, i have mulitple pedals, and fx patches on the fx processor as well as the amp channels and its all controlled by the push of 1 button.

Being relatively new to this midi switching stuff I'm failing to picture all the signal routing in my head. :)
warplanes1 1 year ago
thanks for the review, i was actually gonna call voodoo labs tomorrow but you answered almost every question i had.

This is really awesome, I need one.

12AC power, if you buy one don't piggy back the power from the Audio Switcher as the pedal can become glitchy.
RyanMortimer13 1 year ago
I have two questions about the Ground Control Pro. I hope you can answer them. First, can you set the instant access switches to be different depending on what preset you have up? Second, can you make a preset that leaves some loops completely alone (on or off as they were before you hit the preset) or does every preset have to define on/off for every GCX loop? Thanks man, and keep up the good work!
iamtheari 2 years ago
for #1, when u change presets, ur changing the instant access loops. So each preset will only call up
canadaboy23 2 years ago
I must not have been clear. For question 1 what I was asking is whether I can make instant access button #1 change its function based on which preset is selected. For example, can preset 1 have button 1 change GCX loop 1 while preset 2 has button 1 change GCX loop 2 instead?
iamtheari 2 years ago
U can but I would look at the GCX Audio Switcher's Manual on the website of the GCX to find out more about it. Usually u would use instant access button 2 to control that loop instead of button 1
canadaboy23 2 years ago
I've read the GCX and GCP manuals about 10 times each. You can set any instant access button to any GCX loop you want. But can you have a different button->loop mapping for each preset or is it just one mapping for the whole rig?
iamtheari 2 years ago
I'm sorry, your question is not very clear? Please try again.
brownhog72 2 years ago
Sorry. Read the full exchange between canadaboy23 and me yesterday - it seems that there is no clear, direct way of asking it. But he did come up with an answer, which is no you can't do what I want with the GCP. :-\
iamtheari 2 years ago
do i need the audio switcher ? why do you have that box with the slide thing for your pedals to sit on cause i have a fender twin amp 100 watts all tube will the ground control pro and audio switcher work with my amp
raquel1234ful 2 years ago
For q.#2, what I want to know is whether a preset can leave a loop alone. E.g., if I go to preset 1, then turn on loop 1 with an instant access switch, then go to preset 2, then back to preset 1, can loop 1 be left on by preset 2 and preset 1 so it's still on when I go back? Say preset 1 goes to my clean amp and loop 1 is my chorus pedal, and preset 2 goes to my dirty amp with loop 1 not involved in the signal chain, I want the chorus to be left alone when I change presets. Is that possible?
iamtheari 2 years ago
yes because preset 1 controls the instant access loops u pick for it. So if u had preset 1 choose ur clean amp and chorus pedal, then go to preset 2 with ur dirty amp, it would only pick the dirty amp. then when u go back to preset 1, ur clean amp and chorus pedal will come back, no dirty amp. if u need more help let me know
canadaboy23 2 years ago
The thing is that I don't want my chorus pedal on preset 1. I want the chorus pedal to be on instant access only and never turned on *or* off by any preset, but always left where I set it last. Does that make sense? I know this isn't what most people do but I'm not most people. Thanks for the info so far. :)
iamtheari 2 years ago
ok so u want to use it more like on a pedalboard. What u can do is have preset 1 for ur clean amp and whatever else u want for it, but dont pick the loop with the chorus pedal in that preset. So when u pick preset 1, it will bring up ur clean amp, but not the chorus pedal. Then u can turn the chorus pedal on/off as u want, and when u go to another preset, as long as u dont pick that loop for it, it wont be turned on
canadaboy23 2 years ago
That's really close to answering my question. :) What I want to know is if the chorus will be left on when I go back to preset 1 later. For example, say I'm playing on a clean chorus setting (preset 1 plus the chorus loop engaged, which is not part of preset 1 but only on an instant access button). Then I play a lead on preset 2. When I hit preset 1 again, will the chorus loop still be engaged or will I have to re-engage it manually?
iamtheari 2 years ago
u will have to manually re-engage it because it is not apart of that preset.
canadaboy23 2 years ago
Thanks. That answers my question at last. Nobody else I asked seemed to know (and they all took a day to figure out what I was even asking - I should practice the question better!)
iamtheari 2 years ago
no problem man, glad I could help. Im hoping to get my GCX and GCP soon and get my rig all together.

Hey bro, besides this is there any other product you know of that would allow me to control my stomp boxes in sorta the same concept?
You know about the nova system? Would it be able to do that?

I see you have both rack w/head setup and rack separate from head. I was thinking of doing a rig like the one you have with both the head and rack in one case, but is it practical with the weight? Advantages/disadvantages? Gracias
