I purchased this camera one year ago. the camera this year died. Here are my impressions on this short lived camera:
Pros: Good image quality, Adequate flash, Portability
Cons: Did not survive underwater, Subjects looked rather severe with flash, holding the camera was not very easy because of its size/shape The battery/SD card compartment was not water tight. It allolwed seawater to enter as soon as the camera entered the water.
Don't buy this cam...some internal parts of mine are oxidized...after 6 month of carefull use...Panasonic doesn't want to change this parts and said that IS NORMAL...yea rigth, very "NORMAL" (and reliable) have a waterproof camera with internal parts oxidized!!!!! I´m very disappointed with Panasonic, Lumix brand and costumer service!
((( I HAVE one FT1 !!!... My OPINION about FT1 Is Really A GREAT small CAMERA and VIDEO HD ...I'm REALLY VERY HAPPY !!! always with me on my pocket ! I do some small video TEST You Can see on my Page ! watch !
@mamaspolo it depends if you want HD video recording or not, which is one of the features of the Panasonic Lumix Ft1.
However, the Olympus is up to 10m waterproof and shockproof to 3 m, which is greater than the Panasonic Lumix which can only go up to 3 m waterproof and 1.5 m shockproof.
For my birthday Im receiving a Panasonic Lumix Ft1, which I'm very excited about!! Because it is the only compact camera to have AVCHD recording :)
so it depends on what you prefer, hope that helped x
The crap thing is that when recording in AVCHD mode, you're limited to only 15 minutes. Panasonic did this because recording more than 15 mins would mean the camera would be classed as a camcorder which in turn levies more taxes.
I really doubt that is why. It's probably because a 15 min HD video file is so big that it has trouble handling anything larger on a memory card - as opposed to tape, which is practically endless.
No I think it is for all versions. It has nothing to do with overheating or memory card sizes since SDHC cards now go right up to 32GB. It is indeed a fact that if a camera records more than 15 mins of HD video it's classified as having camcorder functionalities and thus levies more taxes.
i love your review on cameras it is the most informative review ive read or seen all day n ive been searching cameras online for 10 hours, almost all day. n this is the one review that answered all my questions. kudos!!
I have an aluminum intel macbook and am thinking of buying this camera. Have you found any programs for mac that accept the hd movie files for editing?
you could ask for a kick-ass orange body, direct HDMI connection, fast start-up, and HD movies. and maybe, autofocus TRACKING, large LCD, a manual LED.
and while you're at it you could ask for a quick record button, 4.6x optical zoom while recording movies, and a WIDE-angle lens.
OHHHH WAIT. it's got all that.
OH WAIT it;s got it. A+ for panasonic and A STEAL at $400.

It may have something to do with heat tolerances, or other considerations. The early DSLRs with HD video overheat if you record with them too long.
They may also wish to not have the camera compete *too* well with their camcorder lines.

That is for the non-North American version isn't it???
