I see the argument about old rock & metal all the time. Simply put, most old metal from the seventies is considered rock by today's standards. Hell, a lot of metal bands today are considered rock because of death & black metal. I like death & black metal, but there's all sorts of metal out there. I would call this early heavy metal.
i would say cream was first heavey metal band,as evidenced at their royal albert hall show in 68 or 69,theres footage of 2 audience members banging their heads, bet no other band b4 them induced that effect in the masses.
There is footage of MC5 around the same time period with people head bangin in the crowd. I think the MC5 was more rock and roll but definitely had some early heavy shit happening.
:) I was just thinking of this band a day or two ago. And I stumble across it here. :) Will listen to a few more of their songs now. This is great stuff! :)
I was there .. an old guy .. Aerosmith is not heavy metal .. and none my friends .. though we loved early Aerosmith .. ever thought of them as a heavy metal band .. Hard Rock .. yes ,,
clearly those who said aerosmith wasnt considered metal were not there lol. Apparently they never heard toys in the attic or rocks albums either. IF you dont consider nobodys fault metal you are just stupid and deaf.
@mikexlong, by 1971 heavy metal had already been established by Sabbath, so this isn't exactly "proto-metal." It's more upbeat than Sabbath, but the twin guitar harmonies and galloping rhythms are definitely metal.
@CodyRicheson well technically Sabbath had established heavy metal as early as 1969, but even though they were (the original) heavy metal, the genre itself was still emerging. after Sabbath there very few bands that would follow them that were fully fledged metal bands until the NWOBHM, which was of course presaged by Judas Priest, and to a lesser extent the Scorpions. So even though the earliest heavy metal predates this, the term proto metal is still apt. at least i can argue it is neway lol
@mikexlong, I guess I'm going more by how it would have been seen at the time. I try to look at things from the eyes of the original event, then add my own two cents. It all goes back to the debate of who coined "heavy metal" and who directed the term to Black Sabbath, since they themselves did not label their music as metal.
@CodyRicheson indeed, of course GFR, Queen, Zeppelin, Free and Aerosmith were all commonly called heavy metal in the seventies. but certainly this music will always be associated with heavy metal as the only people who know of these bands are diehard classic heavy metal heads interested in the genres origins.
@boardskins well I'm just saying that only 1 person in a few thousand has any idea what sir lord baltimore or granicus or this band sounded like, or has even heard of them. and they're most likely going to be fans of better known bands like black sabbath, cream, deep purple etc ie dedicated fans of early hard rock and heavy metal.
@CodyRicheson ...but then again it all comes down to personal opinion, because no matter how much one thinks he(very rarely is it "she") knows about metal, nobody can ever claim to be the arbiter of all metal, or king nerd/dork or whatever you want to call them. and there are a lot of close calls. my favourite obscure proto metal/early metal bands are lucifer's friend, blue cheer, captain beyond, buffalo, night sun, jerusalem, pentagram and sir lord baltimore, what are some of yours?

I love this band -- we used to some of their stuff in our garage band in '72-'73. It was a political / spiritual / emotional STATEMENT! Thanks for posting!
@snubbs741 .... Hi there Snubbs 741 , the problem with this video of mine is that there were many of the people who viewed it saying that this is Heavy Rock and not Heavy Metal . Me , I'm still confused whether I am right or they're right ... Anyways , great early 70s Heavy band ...
@Zepplica911 eh not that it really matters what you label it.. but this is total heavy metal!! and people gotta realize that back in the day, kids called this heavy metal..
well i'm just 17 so i wasnt there but i know old folks who said aerosmith used to be their "heavy metal" haha
@snubbs741 I'm 52, and no, Aerosmith was never considered "heavy metal" by anyone who knew what they were talking about. Blues driven hard rock, yes. "Heavy metal," no.
@snubbs741 I would say this song is a ... bluesy hard rock, something like that. Some parts remind me of early Iron Maiden, but it's way too loose and groovy to call it a metal for me. Anything where you don't have tight drum beat and very precise guitar playing with lot's of palm muted gallops doesn't really sound too metal to me. But I'm used to all kinds of thrash metal bands...
@Zepplica911 I always listen for the beat and how the instruments go against each other rhythmically (drums & bass vs. guitars & vocals). Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple... I'd call all hard rock, like AC/DC and such. Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Metallica... some kinds of metal, followed by the more extreme ones like black and death metal.
@autopsy87 ...... I guess you are right in the area where the lyrics are not as Metallish as Sabbath's for example and the de tuning , too . However , I think that the line between Heavy Metal and Heavy Rock is too hard to recognize ... Thanks for the comment my friend ...
