  • La gueule . Elle donne des gros coup de cravache et elle lui ire sur la bouche ! La basse !

  • My mom says he was real sweat too... I told herthey were gonna clone a horse and when we started talkin and that lead to hours of old pics and going to his web site and her old album she had as a teen, I didnt belive her at first but my mom worked this horse not just 1 time eather and by the way she reacted to me talkin about him i'd say she was pretty close with him. (she rode him be for he was famous)

  • Wow big horse and tiny little rider. Great team.

  • this horse is a gift from god

  • Gem, along with Milton, Jappeloup, and Big Ben; are all there to open the gates for Hickstead. May he rest in peace.

  • I just miss his bucking, always so full of himself, in his younger days. Best horse, up there with Big Ben & Milton. SO cool, to see a Chapot riding him.. Thank you for posting!

  • what a horse, never seen anything like him!

  • looks like a stressful ride, wonder how tall Gew Twist is??

  • @hunterjumper798 was*** and he was 16 something. U could problyfind out on google

  • that has got to be the most beautiful big white horse i have ever seen

    hes drop dead gorgeous!!!

  • @battousaiblade

His clone will be too... that is one HANDSOME colt!

  • @ImmortalSynn HE IS BEING CLONED!

  • @3000horsecrazy

...you're a little late with that-- his clone is over three years old and in training. Lol

  • @3000horsecrazy wow cloning is alittle creepy to me! :-{ and besides... no horse will be as good as him!c :-)

  • @3000horsecrazy

Relax, cloning is just a progression of science.

Besides, think of it this way:

the unnatural act of cloning, is just the undo/reset button against another one of man's unnatural acts-- neutering.

  • pause at 0:54 n 2:16, shit that is one flying horse!!!!!

  • My trainer was on good terms with Gems Owners, shes got posters of her daughter and Gem together.

  • @michellecoutois I agree with @ImmortalSynn, she is small, and this horse is big. The commenters say that she had to kick him back up into the bridle, hence the not to tight reins. Besides, if your a top notch rider, you don't need a bridle. I've seen riders so in tune with their horses they can completely control them with their seat and legs. That's how the spanish one a war ;)

  • She still rides like that she is my trainer oh i miss gem even though I only sat on him and trotted him he was the best but now we have his clone gemini! who is adorable

  • Best part is at 1:00. Look at the power!

  • What a POWERFUL round. I'd love to say she does wonderful riding, but he doesn't need anyone with the way he makes his way around the course.

  • i feel like he got faster with age!!

  • Great horse, but is it just me or is she ALL over the place with the longest irons in the world, sloppy reins and seems to be riding scared? Just observing...stressful ride, insanely talented Gem Twist, not my favorite rider for him. Honest observation.

  • @michellecoutois

Let's be real for a sec here:

    1) this was only her second season riding at the grand prix level.

    2) she's extremely petite AND he's got a large barrel-- so naturally you're gonna see longer stirrups than typical. She did not have them at that length on her other mounts at the time.

    3) Gem was acting in a schoolmaster role here, not an FEI contender as he was during his time with Greg/Leslie.

    Context.........

  • @ImmortalSynn sounds good, power to her still scared the hell out of me. Great Schoolmaster....

  • @michellecoutois

"still scared the hell out of me."

...as I'm sure would the ride of almost every 2nd-year competitor at that level.

Hence, I sorta wonder the point of that particular type of criticism.

  • @ImmortalSynn i love gem twist :)

  • @michellecoutois nope, she just rides the natural way. Her interventions are minimalistic and always forward if you notice. She never ever pulls back, which is so different from the european way of riding. The horse is purely on his legs and he often decides the distances because this is the way he was trained: cooperation hundredn percent and pure trust. Actually the contrary of what you say, not scared at all. Magnificent and spectaular.

  • @michellecoutois I for one found her sensitive and kind—so many riders get grabby with the reins on a high-pressure course like this. She looked very well-adapted to handling Gem Twist's scope, letting him do his job without a lot of fussing!

  • for sale?lol

  • @moggre2008

He's not, since he's dead... but who knows, maybe his clone someday will be. His clone's (and therefore, vicariously) HIS children will definitely soon be!

  • this is so inspirational!!

  • most amazing horse ever!

  • @AlwaysTheDancer

...part One. Can't wait to see what Gemini does!

  • Jesus in horse form?

  • I actually got to meet this horse at his personal home. What an amazing animal. Much love and he will be missed!

  • look at how he stretches his legs and 1:00 to clear that jump!!! amazing!

  • I love how long her stirrups are, as a petite rider I can attest to needing to have way more leg around my horse to get any leg into him!

  • god i really hate it when people post videos of my horse on utube ;) haha! i wish...I LOVE GEM TWIST!

  • I really dont think shes all that great! No offence!

  • @vivienleigh1097

Well, here she wasn't... it was only her 2nd season of riding Grand Prix, and Gem was serving as her school-master.

Now, 15yrs later, she's indeed a great rider. And SHE is now the lesson-master for Gem's clone, Gemini!

  • @ImmortalSynn They cloned Gem Twist? thats awesome. I thought clones of great horses weren't allowed to compete? Just breed? Or am I mistaken?

  • @KnightHawke01

In Thoroughbred racing, yes. There's nothing however, preventing a clone from entering most Open Jumper classes.

  • @ImmortalSynn oh. That's cool. It must be amazing to be able to experience greatness all over again.

  • @KnightHawke01

Indeed. Granted, ya never know how closely a clone will resemble its progenitor in terms of personality, but the physical ability is definitely there.

And frankly, I think Gemini may actually get an *advantage* over Gem:

he's being raised/handled/trained by Frank Chapot from day one, who knew everything there was TO know about Gem; that knowledge gives him the ability to tailor Gemini's upbringing in a way that would address any potential struggles Gem may have had, head-on

  • @ImmortalSynn Wow yeah, that's very true! I know horses that have been cloned a few times, and each time they came out slightly different as far as their markings went. :>

  • @KnightHawke01

Happens. Markings are a phenotypical expression, so they can vary within the genotype.

  • @vivienleigh1097 actually, my mom's friend is a grand prix rider and her horse, Twistar is AMAZING, who was breed by Gem Twist

  • @Scottylover4ever

"who was breed by Gem Twist"

...not quite sure what you're trying to say by this, particularly considering that Gem was a gelding. Clarify please?

  • @forhopealone

**HE** was amazing... and that's why I can't WAIT to see what his clone (who's now being ridden!) will do!

  • wow! he jumps so perfect!!! his knees are nice a squared when he jumps!

  • Hey, how are are you doing? :) Just a question, do you have any recent updates on Gem's clone, Gemini? Since he was foaled in 2008 he should be getting started under saddle this year! I heard he's becoming grey too. I tried to look for news about him online but I only found old stuff published before Gem was cloned. Thanks :)!

  • @FieryHooves

Gemini has been being ridden for several months now.

There's two or three pics of him under saddle on just Google Images alone, shouldn't be too hard to find 'em. ;)

  • incredible pair. The rider is very talented, but Gem Twist saved her butt a few times! What an amazing horse, he really really loved his job. Never seen a horse who wanted to win so bad...

  • he's HUGE. and gorgeous :)

  • @kaymm93

Gorgeous, yes. Huge, not at all.

  • @ImmortalSynn I meant he's pretty stocky looking - maybe it's because the rider is small :) he's bigger than the horses I'm used to

  • @kaymm93

Indeed, he was barely 16.1, but thick. She was very petite, so it makes him seem much larger than he is.

  • This horse is so LOVELY!

  • Thank you for posting this video for those who had heard of this amazing horse, but never got to see him in action.

  • @equinepainter

Welcome, I have another of him up ("John Whitaker Competes Gem Twist") and I'll be putting another up as well ("Send in the Clones") as soon as I can get my laptop software to start cooperating again.

  • He goes like a pony haha .

  • whoa! he's a big boy!!!

  • How come all the world's amazing showjumping horses are white <3 of course there's exceptions but I mean, there's Milton and now Gem Twist, who's gonna be the next? :P

  • @RedHyuuga

Um... there's like two, and you just listed them. Maybe three, if one counts Calvaro.

I'm pretty sure Jet Run, Ryan's Son, Big Ben, Jappeloup, Weihaiwej, Ratina Z, Baloubet, Judgement, Hickstead, etc.... would take exception to being called "exceptions." lol

  • @ImmortalSynn of the others you counted up I only recognize Baloubet, don't think I've hard of the others nor seen them :S

  • @RedHyuuga

Which is why you should look them up, and study them. Every single one of those horses has, at some point in their careers, been suggested to be "the World's Greatest" and all of them could've gone toe-to-toe with Milton or Gem Twist any day.

Heck, some of them DID! For example, Jappeloup was the horse who *beat* Gem Twist for the 1988 Olympic gold medal. Gem got silver.

Oh, that, and I also think Gandini Lianos should be on that list.

  • @ImmortalSynn I might check them out when I got more time on my hands, right now I unfortunetly doesn't have much time.. blame it all on school XD

Though school won't stop me from loving and be amazed by horses :D

  • @RedHyuuga

    ...as it should be. :)

  • god's got himself one helluva grand prix horse <3

  • @EquestrianPride16

Look on he bright side... he sent us what looks to be a near flawless clone, as a consolation prize. I'd call that a fair trade! ;)

Can't wait to see how the clone (Gemini) does, and also what sorta foals he produces. He's already being ridden now.

  • Gem Twist puts his whole heart into this.

  • @Docciee

Yep. That's what made him one of, if not *THE* greatest! I can't wait to see if Gemini does the same!

  • @Docciee He looks like such a heavy horse, but still has such a powerful jump !

  • :39 and for a few seconds, lmao. Have to bring that boy DOOOOWN. Recollect. xD

  • He is truly magnificent!

  • Now *THAT* is a horse that loves his job! Beautiful run!

  • Gem twist has such a huge reaching stride!

  • what a beauty! how big is he (cm or m)? and what breed? :)

  • @sumjenta

He's American Thoroughbred, and just shy of 16.1.

And no, I'm not gonna bother converting it to metric, just know that he was a few cm shorter than Milton, from the other thread.

  • @ImmortalSynn Wow, barely 16.1? He looks HUGE! At least 17hh+... He has a huge jump too

  • @MyJumper21

That's only because SHE is so tiny. If you look at the many vids/pics of him with Greg Best, you get a much more accurate sense of his size.

  • @ImmortalSynn Yeah I guess it's because she is small. He also though looks bigger boned though, which also makes me think he's big. I wonder if his clone will be bigger then him because of not being gelded.

  • @MyJumper21

Possible, but not all that probable. Neutered horses are surprisingly proficient at developing secondary sexual characteristics... so while Gemini is likely to put on more muscle and also develop that stallion-esque neck, I doubt he'll be all that much taller.

  • wow

  • 1:00 SUPERMAN!

  • what power, he must be a tough ride. she handles him sooo well :D

  • Very long back, must be easy to sit on, and an absolute power house. c:

  • @xUniquelyCommonx

His back actually wasn't that long... again, she's just extremely tiny. Google pictures of him with Greg or Leslie on his back, to get a better sense of his proportions. Or check out my other vid of him "John Whitaker competes Gem Twist"

  • This is one amazing horse.

  • if i wer a horse... id marry gem twist :3

  • @catteye

...you might not get much outta that. lol

But ya could always go for his clone (Gemini) instead, who will remain a stallion once he's mature. :)

  • And also, Gemini was cloned in 2006, when Gem passed. Its difficult to explain, but as an animal gets older, so do the genes (that's why animals GET old) so any health problems that Gem may have or would have had Gemini will have much sooner than he would have had he not been a clone. Does that make sense? lol

  • @SelmerLibertyOwner

That's not exactly true. What you're doing is taking what happened to Dolly the Sheep, and applying it to Gemini... the fallacy there is that ungulates (like Sheep) tend to suffer that effect in the telomeres of their cellular structure if they're cloned from cells from certain parts of the body (Dolly was from an udder cell).

An equine like Gemini shouldn't suffer that same effect, particularly seeing as he was cloned from epithelial cells, which tend to resist that.

  • @ImmortalSynn Hm.. Maybe. i guess we'll have to see.

  • @SelmerLibertyOwner

Not really. Barring any freak occurrence, there's not much guesswork involved in that regard, it's been done hundreds of times at this point, with expected results.

  • OMG, Laura!!! She's the luckiest girl in the world to have ridden Gem Twist, to begin with! I've seen him when Greg Best rode him a few times. But Laura's ride is incredible. What a fabulous pair. Very impressive. What a great memory for her of him!

  • wow thats amazing that horse is amazing and beautiful

  • Wow. He might as well be flying.

  • I remember watching this horse when I was little, and referring to it as Budweiser Twist lol because I had no idea what Equestrian Jump-Offs were, and that sponsors were a part of these event.

  • he is HUGE. & gorgeous!

  • @hunterjumper1103

    He's barely 16.1, she's just extremely tiny.

  • @ImmortalSynn Ive also seen some of his rides with Greg and he still looks huge to me =) Ive never seen a horse with so much arena presence.

  • Did you know that Gem Twist was succesfully cloned?

His clone, Gemini, was born healthy in September 2008.

Who knows...Maybe Gemini will be as great as Gem Twist, or produce even greater foals (since he, unlike the original, is a stallion).

  • @FieryHooves

...have you read any of the 1 outta 3 or so posts here that already mention that? hehehe ;)

  • @ImmortalSynn

Yeah, I did, after I had posted xD Oops.

I would've guessed that you knew, but I was hoping other people wouldn't :P Should I delete the comment?

  • @FieryHooves

LOL, don't worry about it... I'm just messin' with you.

I hope they release more pics of Gemini though, he's almost 2. I bet he's noticeably dappling out by now!

  • @ImmortalSynn

Definitely! I can't wait to see how much he'll resemble Gem Twist, both visually and skill-wise :)

  • @FieryHooves

    *IF* he does, in either.

Remember, clones will always be 100% genotypically identical to the original... but they can express a completely different phenotype-- meaning they have the same genes, but can look, act, and even smell differently. In fact, cloned horses almost never have the same markings as the original.

  • @ImmortalSynn

True that. But I personally think (and hope!), that Gemini will resemble Gem Twist's beautiful looks, and remarkable jumping abilty. Like I said before...Who knows. Maybe he'll be just as great as Gem, or maybe even better!

  • @FieryHooves

Well, Frank Chapot is saying that he wanted to give Laura a horse with Olympic potential... he's got Gem's gene's and Chapot's training from day one-- so barring injury or some other unfortunate situation, it's tough to see how he could NOT be something special!

  • I want this horse!

  • @BexaEquestrian4

well, seeing as he's sorta... dead, might be a bit difficult to accomplish.

  • I'm against cloning because for one thing it's playing with something that's not meant to be played with. And second there are no guarantees that the clone will be anything like the real thing. Environment, training, and luck play so much into it.

He certainly is a FANTASTIC horse though. Incredible.

  • @rkhorserider

"it's playing with something that's not meant to be played with."

LOL, you say that as if horses' genitals were meant to be mutilated, in the first place.

"second there are no guarantees that the clone will be anything like the real thing."

There's a 100% guarantee that the clone will carry the same genotype, which is the whole point.

As for being "anything like" its predecessor, well, that's the same with ALL forms of offspring.

  • @ImmortalSynn It's kind of required. Geldings are calmer, easier to handle, and can live with other horses. Stallions require expert handling in most cases, handling that many horse people -- especially those that lack experience -- can't provide. Some stallions are downright dangerous until they're gelded. It also helps keep genetic diseases from being passed on.

From what I've seen most people clone animals because they're looking for one that's EXACTLY like what they had. Inside and out.

  • @rkhorserider

    "It's kind of required. "

Don't fool yourself: it's unnatural mutilation, plain and simple.

Back in the day, if you couldn't handle a stallion, you couldn't be around horses. Also plain and simple. But we've taken a COMPLETELY unnatural process such as that, got comfortable with it, and now it's as accepted as it is common.

Such is the future of cloning.

  • @ImmortalSynn Question: do you feel the same way about spaying and neutering? Imagine what would happen if we DIDN'T have gelding. Just think about it.

  • @rkhorserider

    What "same way"?

In case you haven't followed... I support it all: gelding, spaying, neutering, and cloning.

  • @ImmortalSynn Back in what day? The Scythians were the first thought to geld their horses-in 600 BC or so.

  • @golickaclown

Your response seems predicated on the notion that gelding wasn't around in ancient times. I never said nor implied that to be the case. Just noted that 1) it wasn't comparatively common, and 2) in many cultures, an insult. Ancient China, Mongolia, and the Hellenistic period come to mind.

  • @rkhorserider

"I've seen most people clone animals because they're looking for one that's EXACTLY like what they had"

Then tell me who they are, so I can rip them off too! If they're THAT uneducated and gullible, but still have the money for the process, then they're SITTING BAIT!

There's no guarantee that clones will be like the original. Heck, cloned horses NEVER even have the same markings-- much less behavior/temperament/personality, etc. Anyone involved should know that!

  • @ImmortalSynn I agree! I see it in the news all the time, one person losing their favorite horse and then cloning him expecting to get their horse back. I'd be interested to find out how that turns out a few years down the road. It's also why I'm against cloning because as long as we have it, there will be people gullible enough to try to get their favorite horses back when all they're doing is creating more problems for themselves.

  • . . . good point but i feel that gelding is more necessary then cloning because this way we have safe riding horses and the population doesn't explode. But I do see where your coming from. Although in this case it doesn't really harm the horses, they're just shocked.

  • ikr?! im kinda against cloning but i think hes worth it

  • @gemtwistable

Understand... though tell me, have you ever asked yourself:

    1) What exactly are you "against" with it?

    2) and if so, do you feel the same way about gelding?

Because always remember, cloning wouldn't be necessary in most instances, if the (extremely unnatural) process of gelding hadn't interfered in the first place. ;)

  • holy crap this guy totally ROX!

  • @gemtwistable

    Hopefully his clone will too!

  • @purplejumpergirl

If that's the case, then you should check out my Loro Piana Tomboy videos. NO horse matches him in power/clearance! ;)

  • i like the way john rode him better...

  • woah ho ho! that first fence, gallop gallop! oh crap long, "gem"...um nooooooo not THAT long, *wack* ok FINE!

  • Did Gem Twist ever sire any foals? I don't really know much about showjumping, I'm more a hunter.

  • @Susie369

...would be a little difficult for *him* to have sired much of anything, hehehe. :)

However, that's the reason he was cloned. Assuming everything goes to plan, his clone (Gemini) will be siring many Many MANY MAAAAANY foals! ;)

  • Could I kindly ask to have permission to borrow this clip for a video I'm working on?

  • @RockyMHorse

    Sorry, but no.

Do not repost this in another video, as it'd violate the agreement with Prime/FOX to air some of their old clips (ever wonder why none of my obviously copywritten posts gets deleted?), and if they get upset, then I/we lose about 70 videos here, so I'd rather not see that happen

Obviously, I can't stop you from downloading this video for personal use if you know how to do it, but if it's ever reloaded to this or any other site, then that would constitute a problem

  • I got to meet Greg Best! He came to my barn for a clinic :)

  • Gem was the most amazing horse. I had the privilege of knowing him when I worked at Windy Top Farms in NJ. He was a beautiful dapple grey when he was younger.

  • What the gourgus horse... idk what but.. SOMETHING about him just maked him pop out... :D

  • @catteye

    ....and it's inheritable too:

his clone is turning out to be a real looker as well!

  • how high is this?!

  • @jillkc99

It was an FEI qualifier, so maximum height (1.60m, 5'3")

  • Dont care to much with his rider. ugly eq.

  • @JumperHunterLover

Sure... you you ~do~ realize that equitation is more or less a construct for amateurs, do you not? Most riders at the FEI level have longggg since abandoned form for functionality.

The likes of Michael Matz and Beezie Madden, who make it look like a 5ft hunter round-- are the EXCEPTION, not the rule.

  • @ImmortalSynn yes I do understand that but it is nothing to abandon. But its a lot more pleasant to watch a horse and rider with form than to watch a strung out horse getting it bit yanked out. But that is my opinion and I have my own views.

  • @JumperHunterLover

Sure you can, it's a free country after all.. but then again, you shouldn't fool yourself into thinking said opinion/views have anything more than a passing-acquaintance with the reality of the situation, as previously described. That's how delusion sets in. ;)

  • is this your horse?

  • @x0xcaitlinliamx0x

    I WISH! LOL.

    He belonged to Michael Golden.

His clone belongs to the Chapot family.

  • Wow this horse blow my mind...Great job you to

  • ich finde die sprünge zu hoch und der reiter ist volld as a-loch

  • @Thedidi2345

Warum würde jemand egal, was du darüber? LOL. Dieses Pferd war einer der besten, und du bist nichts.

  • jeez!!! it looks like Laura's just along for the ride most of the time!!! She's so little, and he's so huge!!

  • @EmilysKYKetoy13

he actually wasn't that "huge" at all... thick yes, but barely over 16hh.

  • OMG the cloned him !?!?! i didnt know that

  • LOL, where've ya been... everyone should know that by now! ;)

If it makes you feel better, they've now cloned several major 1990s showjumping superstar geldings, and I plan to make a video about the three most famous, to help catch anyone who might not know up to speed. It'll be called "Send in the Clones" and will feature the clones of Gem, as well as ET and Calvaro V.

Also, you can see pictures of Gemini if you go to images(dot)Google(dot)com and type in "Gem Twist clone".

  • this should have made a movie about him !!!! hes a great horse and i love his breyer model !!!

  • Maybe someday he will... particularly if his clone (Gemini) goes on to accomplish great things, or sire great horses! ;)

  • omg gorgeous horse!

  • indeed... and you should see his clone, that one's gonna be a major looker!

  • hehehe 1:01 hes likee REACHHH:D that horse is so cute. and wat an adorable riderr naw so little hhehe

  • This horse is simply incredible to watch, hes so incredibly adjustable, and how he hesistates a little right before to peek and scope out the jump and then just BOOM launches with sheer raw power. You almost dont think he'll make it. I have also never seen a horse be SO SMART on while on course, with SO much heart and just endless try.

Videos like these are also a good example of how your supposed to compress the horses stride and unleash all tjhat power over the jump!

  • If you like watching adjustable horses, then I suggest my "Mont Cenis" and (especially) my "Mangrove Mattie" videos.... both feature incredibly adjustable mounts!

  • I absolutely don't know how I only notied this, but at around 0:50, he like slows way down and collects his canter, it's so cute he's like hopping!!!! xD

  • Indeed, right between 16 and 16.1hh, IIRC

  • that's a gorgous white horse I would die 4 a horse like that!!!

  • how tall was he?

  • he looks soooo comfy...that canter ahhahah!!

  • If you want to see a jumper with an amazing canter, check out my Pikadero video... practically a hunter-like stride!

  • Shit he looks like he could be 18 hh easy! What a jumper!

  • Illusion because she's so incredibly tiny...

look at my other video of him with John Whitaker, or really any pic of him with Greg Best, and you can clearly see that he's not that huge of a horse at all.... has a MONSTROUS stride though.

  • amazing !

  • Such an amazing jumper! <3 Rest in Peace Gem!! :(

  • wow look around his flank area it HUGE and muscley wow

  • Look at him at 1:00 AMAZING HORSE AND RIDER

  • that was great.

he looks like such a fun ride. :)

  • so proud i have his breyer!

  • awsome jumpeerrr:)

  • Wow, with Laura aboard he looks huge !
