Yeah, if other actors had played the roles from the start we wouldn't be saying anything, but the fact is that Father Ted is what it is today because of who WAS in it, not who could have been in it. Besides, if there was someone who could play Dougal better than Ardal, I would be surprised.
The people who create and write the comedy are the real geniuses, not the actors. Give your praise to Graham Lindham and Arthur Mathews. Any number of actors could have played these roles just as well. If others had played these roles from the start you wouldn't know any different, you'd be laughing just as much at it, and you certainly wouldn't be saying 'they should have got Dermot Morgan to play that role'. Another actor might have been even funnier in this role, you'll never know.
In an interview just before the 3rd series first aired, Dermot Morgan said that he wouldn't do any more because, ironically, he wanted to do other stuff as he didn't want to be remembered simply as "Father Ted".
@momintheweedzone oh I'm sorry that the gradual corruption of the most important thing that we have i.e. language, doesn't irritate you as much as it does me. In twenty years we'll just have state educated apathetic actors dully reciting txt spk at each other with that attitude. 'momintheweedzone' says it all really. PIS FLPZ.
i haven't found it on any television stations here, but we have ordered our season DVDs and used to watch the episodes on youtube before they took them all down.
Great program.
One thing I've always wondered, did Dermot Morgan wear a wig when playing Father Ted?
His hair looks so thick, and perfectly lined, but you can never see his hairline.. even on the Episodes with the wind blowing in his hair.
So just curious to know if he was wearing a wig for the Character of Father Ted, especially in the 3rd series.
Or was he just blessed with really good hair genes. (apart from the grey lol)
